Engaging Science, Technology, and Society 4 (2018), 246-266 DOI:10.17351/ests2018.239 “These Were Not Boring Meetings”: Miguel García-Sancho Talks with Karin Knorr Cetina MIGUEL GARCÍA-SANCHO1 UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH KARIN KNORR CETINA2 UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO Abstract In this interview, Karin Knorr Cetina evokes the first Annual Meeting of the Society for Social Studies of Science at Cornell University in 1976 as a foundational moment for science and technology studies (STS). This conference consolidated a new approach to the study of science based on the anthropological observation of scientists at work in the laboratory. Knorr Cetina argues that, despite geographically cementing in the United States, this approach originated mainly through the work of European scholars. The years that followed the Cornell meeting were marked by intense debates between the defenders of this anthropological approach and other scholars more focused on ideas than on scientific practice. Knorr Cetina describes these debates as “bloodbaths” and recalls having first coined the term “constructivist” as applied to science studies in 1977. For Knorr Cetina, STS is now shifting its attention from the production to the consumption of technoscientific knowledge. Her current interest in the financial markets and other forms of screen technologies is an example of this transition. She argues that STS needs to overcome its current fragmentation and emphasis in isolated case studies. The establishment of basic research centers with the financial resources to develop collective and long-term programs would help scholars to expand their horizons. In his following reflection, Miguel García-Sancho explores the connections between STS and travel in both a sense of intellectual shift and a more mundane meaning of physical movement. -

TOWARDS A SOCIOLOGY OF CURIOSITY Theoretical and Empirical Consideration of the Epistemic Drive Notion by Ariel Bineth Supervisor: Dr. Jean-Louis Fabiani Second Reader: Dr. Alexandra Kowalski A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology Central European University In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Budapest, Hungary June 2020 i ABSTRACT Curiosity has long been a taken for granted concept in the popular imagination and a marginalized topic in academic discourse, especially in the field of sociology. However, studies in history and philosophy bring key reasons for developing an explicitly sociological treatment of the concept. This thesis provides an argument for the social production of curiosity. On the strength of its motivating characteristic, the essay reformulates curiosity as an epistemic drive in society which organizes the social production of knowledge under given socio-historical and local-cultural circumstances. In the first part of the thesis, historical, philosophical, and sociological literature is reviewed to address common preconceptions of curiosity and give a context for the argument. Then a theoretical apparatus is developed considering the emergence, development, and impact of epistemic drives which serves as a foundation for a new perspective on what motivates the social production of knowledge. The second part of the thesis focuses on the empirical applicability of the epistemic drive notion of curiosity. As a case study, the problem of economic incentives in scientific research is considered. After presenting data on global climate change investments and U.S. federal research funding, the proposition is formed that economic incentives put research projects with short-term profitability at a significant advantage in acquiring funding compared to projects with little to none immediate economic return. -

In this interview, Michael Lynch answers this and other questions, reflecting on his own journey in, through, and alongside the field of science and technology studies (STS). Starting from his days as a student of Harold Garfinkel’s at UCLA to more recent times as editor of Social Studies of Science, Lynch talks about the rise of origin stories in the field; the role of ethnomethodology in his thinking; the early days of laboratory studies; why “turns” and “waves” might better be called “spins”; what he learned from David Edge; why we should be skeptical of the presumption that STS enhances the democratization of science; and why it might be time to “blow up STS”––an appealing idea that Malte Ziewitz takes up in his reflection following the interview. ABSTRACT: One hundred years after its conception, the scientific method continues to reinforce a kind of cultural lore about what it means to participate in inquiry. As commonly implemented in venues ranging from middle school classrooms to undergraduate laboratories, it emphasizes the testing of predictions rather than ideas, focuses learners on material activity at the expense of deep subject matter understanding, and lacks epistemic framing relevant to the discipline. While critiques of the scientific method are not new, its cumulative effects on learners’ conceptions of science have not been clearly articulated. We discuss these effects using findings from a series of five studies with degree-holding graduates of our educational system who were preparing to enter the teaching profession and apprentice their own young learners into unproblematic images of how science is done. We then offer an alternative vision for investigative science—model-based inquiry (MBI)— as a system of activity and discourse that engages learners more deeply with content and embodies five epistemic characteristics of scientific knowledge: that ideas represented in the form of models are testable, revisable, explanatory, conjectural, and generative. -

This thesis problematizes the Anglo understanding of the Bourdieu-Latour relationship and unsettles the resolve that maintains the distance that STS has kept from Bourdieu. Despite many similarities between these two scholars, Bourdieu has remained a distant figure to STS despite his predominance in disciplines from which STS frequently borrows and the relevance of his corpus to topics dear to the heart of STS. This is in part due to Latour's frequent criticisms of Bourdieu by name, Latour’s philosophical disagreements with Kant and neoKantians, and Latour’s prestige in STS, and partially due to Bourdieu’s somewhat indirect or orthogonal ways of addressing natural and physical sciences and technology. Due to the fact that the writings of both needed to be translated from the original French to be received by Anglo audiences, important cultural, stylistic, and rhetorical nuances were lost, mistranslated, or not translated across the linguistic and geographical divides. Including these distinctions is invaluable to understanding their relationship and further weakens the justification for Bourdieu's absence from STS. -

The goal of this position paper is, by means of a thorough literature review, to contribute to demonstrating the urgency of using a sociological stance in a more complete understanding of the social, as well as of Sociology itself as a science. It is concluded that Sociology, a multi-paradigmatic science, seeks to articulate macro-social dynamics with local processes, allowing to connect the subjective significances with the practices, and which focus on the articulations between systems and actors, between structures and practices, between the reality of the social conditions of existence, and the social construction of reality. As an implication, Sociology as a scientific representation and practice of the social, can be cumbersome by helping to dismantle commonly shared preconceived ideas about the instituted social order. Introduction Human Science Pedagogy (geisteswissenschaftliche Pädagogik) is a way of understanding education in terms of human cultures, practices, and experiences, as well as through biographical and collective history1.Itoffers a perspective on education ‘as one of the humanities or arts rather than as a science’ (Tröhler, 2003, p. 759), or alternatively, as a specifically ‘hermeneutic science’ (Biesta, 2011, p. 185; emphasis added). Human Science Pedagogy has further been defined as an effort to ‘give mean- ingful interpretation to educational phenomena in their historical-cultural particularity’2 (Matthes, 2007, p.
