Arabic Twitter Sentiment Toward ISIS and the United States
RESEARCH NOTE—The Enemy of My Enemy Is Not My Friend: Arabic Twitter Sentiment Toward ISIS and the United States David Romney,1 Amaney Jamal,2 Robert O. Keohane,3 and Dustin Tingley4 This draft: June 6, 20205 Abstract (125 words): A counter-intuitive finding emerges from an analysis of Arabic Twit- ter posts from 2014–2015: Twitter participants who are negative toward the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) are also more likely to hold negative views of the United States (US). This surprising correlation is due to the interpretations of two sets of users. One set of users views the US and ISIS negatively as independent interventionist powers in the region. The other set of users negatively links the US with ISIS, often asserting a secretive conspiracy between the two. From the Desk of the Consul-General Consul-General Dr. Kazayuki Katayama September 2013-August 2015 The Consulate-General of Japan in Detroit Detroit, MI August 2015 From the Desk of Consul General of Japan in Detroit (Preface) I have served for nearly two years as the Consul General of Japan, in my jurisdiction of both Michigan and Ohio, from September, 2013 to August, 2015. I focused on the promotion of economics, politics, culture, public relations education and consular affairs, as well as the expansion of person-to-person exchanges in various areas between Japan and the 2 states. The consulate opened in 1993 and I am the 10th Consul General. During my term, I often visited local governments, companies, universities and colleges, Japanese weekend schools, branches of the Japan-America Society and the Japanese associations in various parts of the 2 states in order to foster the understanding of Japan’s policies, including its foreign policy, among the Americans here. I traveled to Ohio 66 times and Michigan (beyond Metro Detroit) 45 times. I visited universities/colleges 43 times, companies 24 times and Japanese weekend schools 14 times. I recited approximately 110 speeches and lecture and invited guests to my residence, to serve them Japanese food and Sake, about 200 times. My goals in participating in these activities were twofold. First, I aimed to convince Americans that Japan is a trustworthy and strong partner to the U.S. Second, I earnestly set out to provide quality services to local Japanese residence and portray the Consulate General as both conscientious and dependable. -

The main focus has been placed on issues connected with the Islamic State and actions of the Shinzo Abe government towards the issue over the last two years. The current policy of Japan towards terrorism will be reviewed and the potential implications of those actions will be shown. The connection between anti-terrorism policy and the national security of Japan will also be examined. This paper will conclude with a prognosis about the potential development of the issue and probable possibilities to counter said threat. Key words: terrorism, Islamic State, Japan, Japanese constitution This year has been shocking for Japanese politicians and citizens. The brutal decapitations of two Japanese citizens, Kenji Goto and Haruna Yukawa by the Islamic State has raised many questions about the efficiency of Tokyo’s current an- ti-terrorist policy. Meanwhile, a series of attacks that struck various states around the globe has also put in doubt the relative safety from terrorism that Japanese citizens have enjoyed for more than two decades. Especially damaging to morale was the attack in Australia, which proved that even remote states considered safe and far away from the centre of struggle cannot feel safe from jihadist threat. -

May 10, 2006 MARKET TREND SURVEY of LARGE-SCALE OFFICE BUILDINGS IN TOKYO’S 23 WARDS (“ku”) (As of December 2005) Supply of extremely large-scale office buildings (buildings with total office floor space of over 30,000 m2) will be concentrated in the three central wards. With more office consolidation, the office environment in the Tokyo Central Business District (CBD) is expected to be further invigorated. Office space demand remains steady, especially in the three central wards. With continuing business expansion, the number of office employees will increase further. What users expect of the office environment: ٤Views of general affairs departments and facility management staff are different from that of office workers; The ideal office environment for the future on the basis of what office workers expect of ٤ offices. Since 1986, Mori Building Company Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Minoru Mori) has been regularly conducting surveys of demand and supply trends of large office buildings with total office floor space of over 10,000 m2 (in this survey, they will be referred to as “large-scale office buildings”) throughout Tokyo’s 23 wards. Forecasts of future trends in the office market are also carried out by analyzing the results of this survey from a variety of angles. The results of the survey as of December 2005 are contained in this report.
