and logos - see page 274. Signage Explained COLUMN shaft FINGER ARMS Finger arms are cast in aluminium because of its higher definition. They are available in various different sizes and lengths. BS or RAL colours and are highlighted by hand in a contrasting colour. All lettering and symbols are permanently cast integral to the arm. Text is available in a number of standard typefaces and a large range of symbols is available. Full or half collar arms are also possible - see pages 262 - 263.

TELESCOPIC SPIGOT Furnitubes’ unique telescopic spigot allows instant adjustment of the spigot height during installation to suit COLUMN the number of arms required. This flexible system allows Base the addition, removal or modification of arms without the need of extension spigots or factory modifications. At maximum extension the spigot can accommodate collar heights up to 1500mm - see page 275.

COLUMNS Fingerpost columns are constructed from a galvanised steel section that runs full length for optimum strength and corrosion resistance. This is embellished with a Root choice of cast iron column base. Several designs for the column base are available, and many standard bollards can be adapted to become a finger post - see page 274.

Furnitubes’ fingerposts offer a wide range of possibilities with a choice of standard columns, finials, directional arms and fonts. However, to achieve specific requirements our design team can work with the customer to adapt standard fingerposts or develop new designs, for instance different font styles or incorporation of town crests.

In order to ensure a complete integration of styles within a certain area, Furnitubes are able to adapt many standard cast iron bollards to become finger posts, as with the Manchester, shown left. Many local authorities have commissioned Furnitubes to design bespoke finger posts, along with other products, as part of unique street enhancement packages. CASE studies

THAMES PATH ROUTES Furnitubes have worked with numerous clients to develop a range of traditional and distinctive cast signage for pedestrian and cycle routes in London, including the Thames Path, Green Chain, Capital Ring and Cray Riverway. Systematic use of route colours, logos and tablet finials to display the site location offer maximum legibility.

Sheet aluminium signs with exterior grade vinyl graphics have also been provided to utilise existing posts along routes. Case Studies

CASE studies

BOURNEMOUTH SEAFRONT Furnitubes worked with Bournemouth Council to supply signage for their regeneration project. The simple Guildford Columns and fingers were painted blue, with white chosen to highlight the text. Custom-made symbols were created to guide visitors.

WELSH SIGNAGE Furnitubes supplied Monmouth and Abergavenny, Wales, with the popular Kingston fingerpost.

Painted in an elegant green and featuring the decorative FFL 2 lancer finials, the bilingual signs can be seen all over Monmouth Town Centre, guiding English and Welsh speaking visitors alike.

In Abergavenny, blue fingerposts were topped Case Studies with plain dome finial, and matching display cases were supplied.

LISKEARD PARADE, CORNWALL Furnitubes supplied Liskeard Town Council signage for Liskeard Parade. The fingerposts utilised the popular Doric cast iron bollard for the base of the signage to give an air of heritage and prestige. The signs are painted in black and yellow for maximum impact and contrast for those partially sighted. Infilled Tablet finials with the Liskeard Heritage logo were used to reinforce the heritage of the town.

CASE studies

WESTMINSTER CITY COUNCIL Furnitubes manufactured fingerposts for Westminster City Council. These elegant posts reinforce corporate identity since they are cast with the City of Westminster crest and are manufactured with special size arms.

The fingerposts, unique to the City of Westminster, can be seen at many high profile locations throughout London including Buckingham Palace, Marble Arch, Bond Street and Victoria.

TUNBRIDGE WELLS BOROUGH COUNCIL Furnitubes worked in conjunction with Royal Tunbridge Wells Borough Council to improve signage and security in the town centre. The basis of the fingerpost design was an elegant leaf form, inspired by an existing Case Studies Victorian lamp column. Furnitubes’ design team sympathetically updated the detail from the original post, taking care to acknowledge influences from both past and present.

As part of the council’s commitment to provide CCTV cameras within the town centre, Furnitubes were approached to design a CCTV column that was ◄ CCTV Column attractive but would also house and provide access to ▼ Detail of Fingerpost Column all the electronics vital to the operation of the cameras. The classical design pictured satisfies both these criteria, blending in well with the variety of architecture within the town centre.

The sample fingerpost shown here was presented for public consultation. With favourable feedback, the fingerposts together with CCTV columns and information drums, were installed throughout the town.

It is vital that visitor information is provided at the main entry points around a town. Information boards and header maps aid travellers and help them orientate themselves in unfamiliar places.

Furnitubes are able to produce fully cast display boards, for situations where information needs to be displayed permanently, such as welcome signs, location maps and street name plates.

A selection of embellished steel columns, finial and colour options are available and these have been used to great effect within the London Borough of Enfield to provide differentiation between areas.

Traditional schemes require a sympathetic approach to design and materials used. Furnitubes’ design team is able to advise on the most appropriate materials and finishes to complement specific schemes.

Location maps are often the first introduction to towns and cities. They are an essential tool for welcoming visitors and enabling them to become orientated and for highlighting places of interest. It is therefore prudent to consider their construction, finish and positioning very carefully.

From concept, through design, to manufacture, Furnitubes is able to produce signage of practically any size or shape to suit specific requirements. The graphics shown on the cast aluminium location maps, here, were meticulously designed, etched in raised-relief and hand painted.

As part of an upgrading scheme to an ageing industrial estate, an entrance sign, street name plates and location maps were designed, manufactured and installed by Furnitubes. The heavy duty entrance sign, pictured below, is designed to suit with the scale of the site.

The sign stands an impressive 4.5 metres high, with the title produced by individual cut letters standing off the background and individual name plates in die pressed aluminium. The other location maps produced for the estate are vandal resistant, manufactured to a high specification and printed using the vitreous enamel process.
