Childs 2018 All Rights Reserved ! 2 ABSTRACT This study examined the relationship between a non-Power Five Cinderella team in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament and institutional financial and admissions factors. The purpose of this study was to examine what, if anything, changes for a non-Power Five school who makes the March Madness tournament as compared to those similar schools who do not. This was a unique study because it looks at the variables of percent admitted, applications, enrollment, SAT/ACT, and donations together, different from the current body of research which has looked at many of these institutional factors separately. Additionally, many of these studies are significantly outdated, conducted in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, and do not take into account the new composition of Division I athletics with the Power Five conferences and all others. This study also provides a non-traditional definition of Cinderella that is both logical and unique. The research question at the heart of this study looked at whether or not winning a game or just making it to the March Madness tournament for schools outside of the Power Five conferences led to an increase in stronger applicants or greater financial donations relative to schools that did not make the tournament, looking both immediately and three years later. The study determined that the research question was not statistically significant across the board using either definition of Cinderella when analyzing all non- Power Five schools or when excluding the BIG EAST Conference. The only statistical findings were three years out a Cinderella team saw an increase in the number of applications to the school and the percent of students admitted. Implications of the study, limitations, as well as suggestions for future research are discussed. Coverage of collegiate athletics is no longer just weekly, as most high profile teams are covered across the multi-media spectrum practically minute by minute. Sports are a major part of American culture and because of national attention institutions are now reaching younger audiences earlier and influencing the college choice process (Barkey, 2016; Hesel & Perko, 2010). The best teams are revered, and the institutions reap the benefit of the national attention, exposing many individuals to the potential of studying

Sahl* The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the primary governing body for intercollegiate athletics, promulgated its “No Agent Rule” in 1974 prohibiting advisors of student-athletes from communi- cating and negotiating with professional sports teams. As part of a core principle of amateurism, the NCAA adopted this rule, in part, to deline- ate between professional athletes and student athletes. However, through economic and societal evolution, this policy is antiquated and detrimental to the personal and professional development of college ath- letes. This Article argues in favor of expanding the recent Rice Commis- sion’s recommendation, adopted by the NCAA, to grant an exception from the No Agent Rule for Men’s Division I elite basketball players to all college sports and levels of competition.

Georgetown University, a member of the Big East Athletic Conference, is operating its Athletic Department using both the “Competitive” and “Participatory” models. Georgetown University’s marquee athletic program is Men’s Basketball and membership in the Big East Conference has proven to be very valuable for the team and the University. The exposure of the program and the University on national television broadcasts gives Georgetown a tremendous amount of publicity. Revenues from ticket sales and merchandising have also proven to be very lucrative. The Big East Conference is great for the game of basketball but the same cannot be said for all sports at Georgetown.

There have been multiple studies in the past that have proven this theory to be correct. However, the goal of this study was to understand if these same results can be seen with members outside of the power five conferences. Using systematic sampling, 31 members of the MWC, Conference-USA, MAC, Sun Belt, and AAC were chosen for this study. The data was collected over a 3-year period from 2012-2014 for all athletic success variables, which were then examined with total applications and the change in applications from year to year to see what relationships exists.

Many universities are sponsored by high powered sportswear and equipment companies including Nike and Adidas. Furthermore, CBS, Fox, and Disney participate in multimillion dollar media deals to exclusively cover a variety of sporting events featuring mainly collegiate basketball and football. This is best demonstrated by the television coverage that respective sports receive. For example, CBS is in the midst of an 11 year, $6 billion contract that will pay the National Collegiate Athletic Association approximately $545 million per year to carry the NCAA basketball tournament. 1 The NCAA basketball tournament is held annually and decides the collegiate basketball national champion through a 68 team, single elimination tournament. The tournament is also known as March Madness and has a widespread age following.

Donna Rohanna Patterson Elementary School Overview Rationale Objectives Strategies Classroom Activities Annotated Bibliography/Resources Appendices/Standards Overview Folk and fairy tale stories comprise most of the stories children hear from birth to 2nd grade. They are used not only to entertain, but often as teaching stories about the dangers and values of life. These very same stories are shared in many cultures around the world. Although they vary in characters, setting, and texture from one continent to the next, they remain some of the most powerful stories for teaching and learning during the early years. Folk and fairy tales have initiated children into the ways of the world probably from time immemorial. Many have changed over time to homogenize into the variety that we often see and hear today to meet a more generic audience, often leaving behind the tales geographic and social origins. By exposing students to a variety of multicultural renditions of a classic Fairy Tale they can begin to relate to these stories in new ways, leading to a richer literary experience. Fairy Tales written through ethnic eyes also give a great deal of cultural information, which can result in a richer experience for the students and students. We can then appreciate the origins and adaptations as they have migrated through time and space. These stories help to make sense of the world for young children. Folk and fairy tales were not meant only for entertainment, they provide a social identity, and instill values as well as teaching lessons. In my own experience I have found that classrooms are often filled with students that either come from other countries or have families that do.
