Eric Clapton & B.B. KINGs Komposition Let Me Love You. Riding With The King erscheint am 26. KING-Originale sowie eine Auswahl von Coverversionen einiger Kompositionen von Isaac Hayes & David Porter (Hold On I’m Coming), Johnny Mercer & Harold Arlen (Come Rain Or Come Shine) sowie von William „Big Bill“ Broonzy & Charles Segar (Key To The Highway). Riding With The King Track Listing: 1. Riding with the King 2.
Už jen při pohledu na Top Five jeho nejúspěšnějších písniček můžeme potvrdit zvláštní pověst, jíž se mezi autory standardů těší: byl skladatelem se zálibou v meteorologii či pozorování jevů nadpozemských a pátou melodií naopak podmořských: Come Rain or Come Shine, Over the Rainbow, Stormy Weather (Keeps Rainin’ All the Time), It’s Only a Paper Moon, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. I mezi níže umístěnými songy najdeme odkazy na speciální tématiku, která není materiální ani milostná: Blues in the Night, Ill Wind, Out of This World, When the Sun Comes Out a částečně i Last Night When We Were Young. To je ovšem pouze povrchní zkoumání a nás zajímá hlubší pohled dovnitř jeho odkazu. Také víme, že v mnoha písních dojde i na tu lásku: I’m gonna love you, like nobody’s loved you, Come rain or come shine…

1 “ON MERCER” Rediscovering The Genius of the American Songwriter, Johnny Mercer, Giant Of The Great American Songbook: [Up Close, Moving and Personal] by Frank Gagliano [email protected] ONE: MERCER RESTART My Johnny Mercer journey started — well, restarted — sometime in the 1990s, when I first read “Roses In The Morning,” browsing in a bookstore in Pittsburgh. This was the title of an essay in Gene Lees’s book, “Singers and The Song.” (Oxford Press, 1987). The title of the essay referred to songwriter Johnny Mercer’s ritual of sending a dozen roses in the morning to people Mercer had insulted the night before, when he was very drunk. What first attracted me to “Singers and The Song,” however, was the cover: The iconic Frank Driggs photo of a young, skinny Frank Sinatra, standing on a stage, in front of a 1940s vintage microphone, in the midst (probably) of singing one of his signature ballads, arms down and out from his sides, palms up, head tilted to his left shoulder, eyes shut tight, wearing a tailored double breasted grey pinstripe suit with floppy grey bow tie, in full spotlight, against a black background, with only a portion of the accompanying white piano catching part of Sinatra’s spotlight. Whatever that venue, one could almost hear the bobbysoxers in the audience, squealing and swooning. 2 In the bookstore, I thumbed through the Sinatra essay and saw, immediately, that the chapter dealt with the artistry of the singer, and how Sinatra had revived the public’s interest in America’s greatest popular songs, and how Sinatra had also revolutionized the art of singing those songs.

  • A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs
A Fine Romance Jewish Songwriters, American Songs, 1910–1965 “ We must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.” When Barack Obama made this statement in his inaugural address of January 20, 2009, he was paraphrasing the lyric Dorothy Fields wrote for a Jerome Kern song that Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers joyously dance to in the 1936 movie Swing Time: “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again.” Americans have always responded to the optimism, no less than the wit and sophistication, passion and verve, of the jazz standards, ballads, torch songs, anthems, up-tempo dance numbers, and showstoppers that make up the American songbook. Like Hollywood movies, with which they have a symbiotic relationship, the songs beguiled multitudes and prove, in their enduring appeal, that the goals of popular culture and high artistic achievement can happily coincide. The best songwriters combined a genius for melody, ingenuity at fitting the right words to it, and the ability to connect with a wide audience. A remarkably high percentage of them were Jewish by birth and heritage. Some (Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers) came from relatively prosperous families with the foresight to immigrate in the 1860s or earlier. Others were children of refugees from Eastern Europe, who risked everything to escape pogroms and persecution in the years just before and after the turn of the century. Following the assassination of a liberal Czar in 1881, cruel anti-Semitic decrees made life miserable for Russian Jews—just as depicted in the 1964 musical Fiddler on the Roof (music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick).
