In the Mundubbera district Upper Palaeozoic sediments of the .southern portion of the Y arrol Basin are exposed in a broad syncline. The sequence has been divided into two Devonian and six Carboniferous formations. Considera tion of fossil zones and stratigraphic and structural relations infers that the Carboniferous rocks are of Tournaisian, Visean, and possibly Namurian age. Lithologic variation throughout the Carboniferous indicates a single strong vertical movement of the Gogango High at the end of Tournaisian time. Evidence is presented showing that this vertical movement of the high may be related to orogenic movements within the Yarrol Basin. Various lines of evidence suggest that the eastern margin of the basin is here marked by a thrust sheet of Lower Palaeozoic rocks.

  • 331 the Discovery, Exploration and Early
331 THE DISCOVERY, EXPLORATION AND EARLY SETTLEMENT OF THE UPPER BURNETT (A paper prepared by Mr. H. S. Bloxsome, Delubra, Mundubbera, and read at a meeting of the Historical Society of Queensland, Inc., on Tuesday evening, August 25th, 1942.) Henry Stuart Russell, after having accompanied Andrew Petrie on his exploration of the Wide Bay River in May 1842, decided to explore west from Tiaro and to search for some country suitable for a sheep station, as at that time his property Cecil Plains on the Darling Downs was not looked upon as suitable for sheep. This seems strange as now it is first class sheep country; but, being virgin land at that time, it probably was covered with a very heavy body of grass through which the sheep had trouble to travel. On November 24th, 1842, Russell and his party left his station, Cecil Plains, and made his way to Tiaro some twenty-one miles south of where Maryborough stands to-day. He had with him William Orton whom he had met on the Severn River in 1840 and a black boy named Jemmy, who was a New England aboriginal. His object was to follow the track which JoUiffe and Last had left by their drays and sheep on the way to the Wide Bay country where they had formed a station for Eales, of Duckenfield Park, Hunter River, N.S.W. Stuart Russell's party crossed the range near Too woomba by what was known as the Springs road. They went past Bigge's camp and then on to Kilcoy.

REGOLITH EASTERN QUEENSLAND REGOLITH - AN ALLY TO NEW MINERAL EXPLORATION IN EASTERN QUEENSLAND MAL JONES Cooperative Research Centre for Landscape Evolution and Mineral Exploration, Queensland Centre for Advanced Technologies, PO Box 883, Kenmore, Australia, 4069 Studies in the Mundubbera area of Central Queensland have investigated how regolith knowledge can be combined with remotely sensed data to define new mineral exploration targets Mundubbera is a region where successful gold exploration has occurred in the past, and new approaches using geochemical dispersion haloes in the regolith may lead to new discoveries in the future Airbome radiometric and magnetic data have been integrated with Landsat TM images and field studies of landforms to determine the regolith framework of the region Several regolith landforms are identified as concealing possibly prospective bedrock These landforms include a Central plateau comprising a thin Cainozoic sandstone sheet over intrusions of granite and granodiorite, and the pediments and hills along the margins of the Surat and Mulgildie Basins On the edges of the basins, prospective bedrock is likely to be close to the surface The abandoned gold mines in the district provide examples of the regolith and geophysical environments associated with proven mineral deposits This information can be applied to selecting new exploration targets in nearby areas Key words: regolith, mineral exploration, radiometrics, magnetics, Landsat TM, gold, Mundubbera, Queensland INTRODUCTION Updated geological knowledge
