According to the filmmakers, one basic problem was that no one knew what genre it fit into – the technology depicted in the movie (for instance, dial-up modems) was so new that studio representatives thought the movie only made sense as science fiction.

  • Music by Daft Punk Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK MUSIC BY DAFT PUNK © Disney Enterprises, Inc. I had been listening to Daft Punk for almost ten years before I met them at the 101 Coffee Shop in Hollywood one morning in November 2007. I sat down not knowing what to expect, and I was immediately struck by their deep knowledge and love of film and particularly the sanctity in which they held Steven Lisberger’sTRON. It quickly became clear to me that this had the potential to be an exciting collaboration. With topics that ranged from Bernard Hermann to Wendy Carlos, the discussion revealed a shared desire to create a score that blended classic orchestral themes with an electronic minimalism in a way that had never been done before. I walked out knowing that there was an opportunity here to create something truly special. Now, three years later, we are in the final stages of mixing and the result has truly exceeded my high expectations. Because the score was developed in parallel with the production of the film, I’ve had the opportunity to live with it for over a year now and it never fails to thrill and inspire me as we near the finish line. I am excited for you to experience Daft Punk’s first contribution to the world of film scoring – I have a feeling it won’t be their last. Joseph Kosinski / September 2010 © Disney Enterprises, Inc. More than twenty five years ago I inspired Daft Punk with the originalTRON. With this score, that inspiration has come back to me in full measure.

It has been accepted for inclusion in Electronic Theses and Dissertations by an authorized administrator of Digital Commons @ ACU. ABSTRACT Mythic narratives exert a powerful influence over societies, and few mythic narratives carry as much weight in modern culture as the Star Wars franchise. Disney’s 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm opened the door for new films in the franchise. 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the second of these films, takes place in the fictional hours and minutes leading up to the events portrayed in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Changes to the fundamental myths underpinning the Star Wars narrative and the unique connection between these film have created important implications for the public memory of the original film. I examine these changes using Campbell’s hero’s journey and Lawrence and Jewett’s American monomyth. In this thesis I argue that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was likely conceived as a means of updating the public memory of the original 1977 film.

  • Wargaming Literature in Popular Culture Esther Maccallum-Stewart
Wargaming Literature in Popular Culture Esther MacCallum-Stewart Digital Cultures Research Centre, University of West England and The University of Surrey The depiction of wargames in popular culture is a surprisingly uneven experience. In Third Person, Matthew Kirschenbaum identifies this tension by using two conflicting arguments to prefigure his paper on wargame narration (2009: 357-72). The first, by Greg Costikyan, asserts that ‘‘There is no story in chess, bridge, Monopoly, or Afrika Korps’’ (Costikyan 2007: 5). This statement is easily refuted by several authors in the collection, including Faidutti, who counters that ‘‘you can easily retell a game of chess or Go with the same tension and suspense of a whodunit.’’ (Faidutti 2007: 95). Crucially, there seem to be two issues at stake here. The first is that the act of playing a game, compared to the immediate and retrospective recreation of the game as an event, are two different experiences, and not necessarily ones that should or can be placed together. The second is the more familiar argument that narrative in games is very different from say, that of a film, book or television series, thus negating some of the estrangement created by the first. Both quotes come from Second Person, (eds. Harrigan and Wardruip Fruin 2007), a collection of essays that argue specifically for the importance of role-play and story within games and suggest that these two elements are important, if not vital elements of gaming. This chapter aims to unpack some of these ideas in relation to the representation of wargames in literature and popular culture.

  • Hacking Urban Space: the Agency of the Open Source City
Hacking Urban Space: The Agency of the Open Source City GERNOT RIETHER INTRODUCTION Kennesaw State University Hacking is increasingly becoming a tactic used by many spatial practitioners who operate at the intersection of digital media and urban space. Information technology that has recently expanded MARCELLA DEL SIGNORE urban systems has initiated new opportunities to hack the city. These opportunities—if recognized Tulane University by the individual citizen—provide a powerful tool for change through questioning, altering, or subverting an existing system. Rather than waiting for city officials or private developers to take action, hacking could empower every citizen to participate in the construction of public space. As hacking has recently become a tool for a number of projects and organizations that speculate on the development of public spaces such as “Civic Hackathons,” one can assume that hacking will increasingly develop as a strategy to empower the individual citizen to intervene in urban environments. It suggests a new form for the citizen to navigate the city, to understand it, and to interact with it in new and meaningful ways. This will not only change the urban environment but also challenge urban planners, architects, and city officials to rethink the current instruments and methods used to shape our cities. HACKING AS METHOD The term “hacking” became popular in the digital subculture of the 1960s. The motive of the hacker is generally understood as gaining unauthorized access to a computer system to destroy data, to access information for personal purposes, or to use the gained access as platform to dis- tribute messages with social, ideological, or political content.

  • Wargames – Hackers Are Gaming
Wargames – Hackers are gaming Male identity construction and playful approaches to computers With this text1 some aspects of the construction of a gendered identity on the example of the figure „the hacker“ shall be addressed. My interest focuses on the hacker as an identity con- struction that is integrated in a technology centered, genderized context, where the hackers interact playfully with technology. At the very beginning I would like to make some comments to prospectively avoid misunder- standings. The following debate about a male dominated youth cultures was from the very beginning on made possible by reading and discussing feminist empiric research. Although the argument is centered on men, it shouldn’t be understood as ignoring women who are ac- tive in the field of hacking. It is rather grounded in the interest to develop a dedicated critique on male stereotypes, based on the feminist critique that emerged over the past years. The problem still is that the ongoing mentioning of man could re-produce „the men/ male as the norm“ again and again. It is problematic as well to use the dichotomy of male/female or men/ women, which makes it easier to discuss the whole thing but puts it at the risk of re-codifying a binary gender construction. Wargames – the Movie When the movie Wargames by John Badham entered cinema in 1983 it wasn’t only a finan- cial success. Rather this movie initiated a whole new generation of hackers. Reportedly the sales of modems and acoustic couples rose dramatically in the US after the movies’ premiere.
