These are: the terminal mouth cleft bisecting the anterior profile at its midpoint, the elongated head with tapered snout, flat skull, long lower jaw, and eyes placed high on the head (Cavender 1980:300-302; compare with Cavender’s Figure 3). The head structure of bull trout is well suited to an ambush-type predatory style, in which the charr rests on the bottom and watches for prey to pass over. ABSTRACT I conducted an extensive survey of published and unpublished documents to identify the native fish stocks of Jasper National Park, describe their original condition, determine if there is anything unusual or especially significant about them, assess their present condition, outline what is known of their biology and life history, and outline what measures should be taken to manage and protect them. -

Go for a ride up the tram famous Icefields Parkway, take a right onto 93A and or just turn back and go for a quick rip down to head uphill until you reach the Marmot Road. Take a town. Distance: 16.5 km return. right up this road to the base of the ski hill then turn Elevation gain: 210 m. back and enjoy the cruise home. Distance: 38 km. Elevation gain: 603 m. FULL DAY MALIGNE ROAD (MAP A) - From town, head east on Highway 16 for the Moberly Bridge, then follow the signs for Maligne Lake Road. Gear down and get ready to roll 32 km to spectacular Maligne Lake. Once at the top, take in the view and prepare to turn back and rip home. -

ROBINSON1 (Received 30 May 2000; accepted in revised form 25 September 2000) ABSTRACT. Peatlands are a particularly good medium for trapping and preserving tephra, as their surfaces are wet and well vegetated. The extent of tephra-depositing events can often be greatly expanded through the observation of ash in peatlands. This paper uses the presence of the White River tephra layer (1200 B.P.) in peatlands to extend the known distribution of this late Holocene tephra into the Mackenzie Valley, northwestern Canada. The ash has been noted almost to the western shore of Great Slave Lake, over 1300 km from the source in southeastern Alaska. This new distribution covers approximately 540000 km2 with a tephra volume of 27 km3. The short time span and constrained timing of volcanic ash deposition, combined with unique physical and chemical parameters, make tephra layers ideal for use as chronostratigraphic markers. Les tourbières constituent un milieu particulièrement approprié au piégeage et à la conservation de téphra, en raison de l’humidité et de l’abondance de végétation qui règnent en surface. L’observation des cendres contenues dans les tourbières permet souvent d’élargir notablement les limites spatiales connues des épisodes de dépôts de téphra. Cet article recourt à la présence de la couche de téphra de la rivière White (1200 BP) dans les tourbières pour agrandir la distribution connue de ce téphra datant de l’Holocène supérieur dans la vallée du Mackenzie, située dans le Nord-Ouest canadien. -

The Great Lakes Basin The Great Lakes basin, as defined by watersheds that drain into the Great Lakes (Figure 1), includes about 85 % of North America’s and 20 % of the world’s surface fresh water, a total of about 5,500 cubic miles (23,000 cubic km) of water (1). The basin covers about 94,000 square miles (240,000 square km) including about 10 % of the U.S. population and 30 % of the Canadian population (1). Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake entirely within the United States. The State of Michigan lies at the heart of the Great Lakes basin. Together the Great Lakes are the single largest surface fresh water body on Earth and have an important physical and cultural role in North America. Figure 1: The Great Lakes states and Canadian Provinces and the Great Lakes watershed (brown) (after 1). 1 Precambrian Bedrock Geology The bedrock geology of the Great Lakes basin can be subdivided into rocks of Precambrian and Phanerozoic (Figure 2). The Precambrian of the Great Lakes basin is the result of three major episodes with each followed by a long period of erosion (2, 3). Maligne Canyon - Jasper National Park
MALIGNE CANYON - JASPER NATIONAL PARK Rating: Easy Hike Length: 1+ hours Season: Spring, Summer, Fall Waypoints: Upper Parking Area 11U 432731mE 5863916mN N52° 55' 14" W118° 00' 02" Lower Parking Area 11U 431666mE 5864010mN N52° 55' 17" W118° 00' 59" Hype One of the must-do sights near Jasper is Maligne Canyon. A short hike visits a stunning canyon section where the Maligne River has cut deeply into the limestone layer, eroding a gorge that is, in spots, only 2 meters (6 feet) wide and 50 meters (160 feet) deep. A trail follows along the top of the gorge, crossing at several points to give close views of the tumultuous waters ragging in the canyon floor below. Maligne Canyon is one of the most popular hikes in the area, and quite busy. Those wanting a short walk should start at the upper trailhead. The most dramatic sections of the canyon are near the upper trailhead and within just a few minutes of the parking lot. For those looking for a bit longer journey, I recommend hiking from the lower trailhead to the upper trailhead and back. Hike from the bottom and back sees the full canyon twice and a nice outing. After 1.8km, turn right onto Maligne Lake Rd. The Malign Lake road crosses the Athabasca River. Follow it for 3.1km to a signed Malign Canyon Trailhead sign. Turn left and follow the side road 700 meters to its end at the trailhead. -

The Dinosaur Park - Bearpaw Formation Transition in the Cypress Hills Region of Southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada Meagan M. Gilbert Department of Geological Sciences, University of Saskatchewan; [email protected] Summary The Upper Cretaceous Dinosaur Park Formation (DPF) is a south- and eastward-thinning fluvial to marginal marine clastic-wedge in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. The DPF is overlain by the Bearpaw Formation (BF), a fully marine clastic succession representing the final major transgression of the epicontinental Western Interior Seaway (WIS) across western North America. In southwestern Saskatchewan, the DPF is comprised of marginal marine coal, carbonaceous shale, and heterolithic siltstone and sandstone grading vertically into marine sandstone and shale of the Bearpaw Formation. Due to Saskatchewan’s proximity to the paleocoastline, 5th order transgressive cycles resulted in the deposition of multiple coal seams (Lethbridge Coal Zone; LCZ) in the upper two-thirds of the DPF in the study area. The estimated total volume of coal is 48109 m3, with a gas potential of 46109 m3 (Frank, 2005). The focus of this study is to characterize the facies and facies associations of the DPF, the newly erected Manâtakâw Member, and the lower BF in the Cypress Hills region of southwestern Saskatchewan utilizing core, outcrop, and geophysical well log data. This study provides a comprehensive sequence stratigraphic overview of the DPF-BF transition in Saskatchewan and the potential for coalbed methane exploration. Introduction The Dinosaur Park and Bearpaw Formations in Alberta, and its equivalents in Montana, have been the focus of several sedimentologic and stratigraphic studies due to exceptional outcrop exposure and extensive subsurface data (e.g., McLean, 1971; Wood, 1985, 1989; Eberth and Hamblin, 1993; Tsujita, 1995; Catuneanu et al., 1997; Hamblin, 1997; Rogers et al., 2016).
