Irish feature films, feature documentaries and animated features compete for the relatively limited screen time available in Irish cinemas with the best in the world. When given the right exposure Irish audiences respond very well to Irish films and increasingly the BSÉ/IFB is engaging with filmmakers and distributors to support and develop new ways for Irish films to find their audiences and for Irish audiences in turn to have access to Irish films.” JAMES MORRIS Chairman Bord Scannán na hÉireann/ the Irish Film Board IRISH FILM BOARD CONTENTS Bord Scannán na hÉireann / the Irish Film Board (IFB) is CHIEF EXECUTIVE INTRODUCTION... 4 Under the Hood: Voices from Belarus.......................... 73 Ireland’s national film agency. Consuming Femininity: Nation-Nation -S--State,Sstate, Gender and Singaporean Chinese Women
Consuming Femininity: NationNation----sssstate,tate, Gender and Singaporean Chinese Women by Wendy Poh Yoke Chew A Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy undertaken at the University of Western Australia 2007 Declaration I declare that this thesis is entirely my own work and that it has not been submitted for a degree or award at this or any other university. To my knowledge it does not contain material previously published or written by another person where due reference has not been made in the text. Wendy Chew Submitted 31 August 2006 2 Abstract My research seeks to understand ways in which English-educated Chinese women in cosmopolitan Singapore bolstered their identity while living under the influences of Confucian values, patriarchal nation-building and racial concerns. My thesis examines women who have themselves been lost in translation when they were co-opted into the creation of a viable state after 1965. Often women are treated as adjuncts in the patriarchal state, particularly since issues of gender are not treated with the equality they deserve in the neo-Confucian discourse. This thesis takes an unconventional approach to how women have been viewed by utilizing primary sources including Her World and Female magazines from the 1960s and 1990s, and subsequent material from the blogosphere. I analyze images of women in these magazines to gain an understanding of how notions of gender and communitarianism/race intersect. By looking at government-sponsored advertising, my work also investigates the kind of messages the state was sending out to these women readers. -

Media Release EMBARGOED TILL 9 DECEMBER 2016, 2030 HOURS SINGAPORE TIME First Recipient from Engineering Design Discipline Conferred Singapore’s Top Design Accolade - President’s Design Award 2016 Singapore, 9 December 2016 – Three designers and 10 design projects were honoured with the President’s Design Award (PDA) this year. Recognised for their design excellence and creative innovation, the recipients received their award from President Tony Tan Keng Yam at a ceremony held earlier this evening at the Istana. For the first time since the PDA was launched in 2006, a recipient nominated under the engineering design discipline received the Designer of the Year award. Dr Hossein Rezai, Director at Web Structures Pte Ltd and a chartered engineer in Civil and Structural Engineering, was recognised for applying structural engineering design principles to provide sustainable, productive and optimised solutions in his projects. “We are happy to celebrate the impressive strides made by our local design sector in our 11th edition. Over the years, we have noticed an increasing number of cross-disciplinary submissions, particularly projects that blend engineering and design. So we decided to introduce Engineering Design as a new design discipline to be considered for the Award. We are happy to have our first Designer of the Year from this discipline,” said Mr Robert Tomlin, Chairman of the President’s Design Award 2016 Steering Committee and DesignSingapore Council. A record number of 140 nominations were received this year, demonstrating the strong support to make the PDA the national benchmark for design excellence. Among the Design of the Year, three are architectural projects.
