  • Porvoo Prayer Diary 2021
PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year. The Bishops of Southwark The Rt Revd Christopher Chessun The Diocese of Bishop of Southwark Southwark The Rt Revd Jonathan Clark Bishop of Croydon The Rt Revd Dr Richard Cheetham Bishop of Kingston The Rt Revd Karowei Dorgu Bishop of Woolwich 7 March 2019 To all Clergy of Incumbent Status Leaving the European Union Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, There are a little over three weeks now before the United Kingdom (UK) is due to leave the European Union (EU). This is a time of great uncertainty for everyone as the country waits to hear the outcome the vote due to take place in the House of Commons on Tuesday 12 March. Even when this vote has taken place it is still difficult to know how life will be here in the UK in the next weeks, months and years. At this time we want to encourage our churches and congregations to pray for unity and for people, whatever their personal views, and to come together to ensure that whatever the outcome we work together to bring about the best possible way forward for the communities we serve in Christ’s name. At a recent meeting of Diocesan clergy who are from the EU 27 remaining nations we heard powerful testimonies of the costly nature of leaving for those who have been very secure in their identity as fellow European nationals. Some have even received taunts on social media. So we commend to your prayers the healing of the divisions which have been caused by the political turmoil of the last three years.

The Bishop of Southwark The Rt Revd Christopher Chessun The Diocese of Bishop’s House Southwark 38 Tooting Bec Gardens London SW16 1QZ To all Clergy and Churchwardens in the Diocese of Southwark t 020 8769 3256 Feast of St Thomas the Apostle, 2020 e [email protected] www.southwark.anglican.org Clergy Well-Being and the Reopening of Church Buildings Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We are immensely grateful to you all for the efforts that have been made, and the imagination and creativity that have been shown, in sustaining the worshipping life of our parishes. This has taken a great many different forms, and we know that it has been welcomed and valued by congregations, as well as giving glory to God. Now we are moving into a phase where we can once again, step by step, open our church buildings for worship. This is a cause of rejoicing, but we want to say clearly that whilst some parishes will be ready to re-start public worship in the coming days, we fully realise that for others it will of necessity be a longer journey to reopening. Above all, our commitment is to ensure that our churches re-open as safely as possible. We are encouraging Clergy to factor in the need to take annual leave and consider directing congregations to online alternatives should they decide to take their leave before reopening for worship. We would encourage Deaneries to work together and co-ordinate the worship that is available both online and in churches over this period.

www.surreybellringers.org.uk Website News Archive 2010 - 2015 Feed Content Setback to restoration of ringing at St. Mary's Clapham Posted:Mon, 28 Dec 2015 14:30:35 +0000 Monday, 28 Dec 2015 The tower at St.Mary’s Clapham has had assorted unsightly cracks for decades but ringing had remained possible as various consultants employed by the Church over the years had not called for it to be curtailed or ceased. Ringing was tailed off around the Millennium, mainly due to lack of ringers, but then the recently completed repairs to the spire were necessary. It seemed that the previous “status quo” regarding ringing would soon be back again, because even the recent works did not include comprehensive remedial work to the tower's cracks. Unfortunately, the Church has now received a report from the Structural Engineers which says the tower appears stable in it's present condition but it goes on to say that the cracks need to be “…..addressed in the near future and certainly before any consideration is given to recommencing bell-ringing in the tower…..”. Ringing can’t, therefore, be allowed to recommence after all. Ringing previously proposed for the Rededication on 17th January will have to be limited to a little chiming, and that full-circle ringing is being deferred indefinitely. The engineers recommend a sequence of inspections, monitoring and analyses leading to, presumably, extensive conservation repairs to all the cracked areas. No timescale is suggested by the Engineers, and, in any event, there will be the issue of another significant financial burden for the Church.

  • Open Letter – Asylum Accomodation
11th February, 2021 Secretary of State for the Home Department The Rt Hon Priti Patel MP 2 Marsham Street Westminster London SW1P 4DF Dear Secretary of State Open letter: Asylum accommodation We have watched with growing concern events unfold at Napier Barracks in Folkestone, Kent and are extremely concerned about the welfare of asylum seekers housed across Ministry of Defence sites. As you know, in the absence of safe and legal routes to apply for refugee status outside the UK, many have no choice but to make a dangerous and perilous journey to seek safety from conflict, persecution, and violence. After such a traumatic journey, having had to often spend time behind wire fences in refugee camps, it is simply insensitive to house people in such environments. In a global pandemic it is nothing short of irresponsible and risks the lives of residents and staff alike. Even as a temporary measure, ex-military barracks are unfit for purpose and entirely inappropriate. Requiring members from different households to use and live in shared facilities greatly increases the risk of infection and residents cannot be held responsible for virus transmission rates when social distancing is not possible. We are therefore calling for an immediate end to the use of military barracks as accommodation for those seeking sanctuary in the UK. It is not a fair or justified response to your legal duty to house asylum seekers who would otherwise become destitute. We understand it is the Government’s intention to move all individuals in contingency accommodation into suitable dispersed accommodation as soon as reasonably practical.
