8 Student Success Amber Rogers Pathology Apprentice, Singleton Hospital, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg (ABMU) Amber, 22, from Llanelli began her career in the healthcare sector on the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Pathology Support with ABMU at Singleton Hospital, Swansea and Pathways Training after deciding there was more to life than working at her local DIY store.

A typical day for Amber can see her prepare samples and work alongside biomedical scientists to label specimens on the dissection bench. It was this hands-on working approach and a newly found enthusiasm for the sector that made juggling other demanding commitments outside of work worth it to ensure that she could continue doing what she enjoyed so much, which at times was demanding.

Amber was one of the first learners in Wales to complete the Pathology Support qualification and is now classed as a healthcare scientist in her own right, securing a permanent position within the ABMU and recent promotion on top. She is an advocate for the use of apprenticeships within ABMU Health Board and is also a mentor to the new apprentices within the pathology department.

"Apprenticeships are great for those people who leave school wanting to work. You get to train onsite, build up your skillset as well as getting a qualification. My apprenticeship with Pathways Training and the ABMU has given me a career I love and opened a world of new opportunities. I am currently a healthcare scientist and will now go onto my Level 4 with the possibility to become a Biomedical Scientist." Amber Rogers

"NPTC Group of Colleges have worked with ABMU Health Board’s Apprentice Academy for over two and a half years and we are very proud of all our apprentices who have achieved their qualifications and moved into permanent roles. For our organisation, employing apprentices to train into roles is a fantastic way for us to ‘grow our own’ staff ensuring that they have the skills, knowledge and ability to develop their career with us." Ruth Gates, Apprentice Academy Manager, ABMU Health Board.

Pathways Training and Powys Training Health board have launched an apprenticeship academy this October. If you are interested in a career with the health board please contact us for details of upcoming recruitment events.

Search NPTC Group 14 Motor Vehicle Level 3 Motor Vehicle students at Newtown College got a rare opportunity to learn more about future electric battery operated technologies, when they got to view an electric conversion of a classic Fiat 500 thanks to Electric Classic Cars of Mid Wales.

The Fiat 500 has all the character of a classic with a modern twist. The motor is mounted at the back (giving more luggage space at the front), and includes three battery packs with a hidden charge point under the Fiat badge. The students took a keen interest in the set up, with the speed and power advantages of electric quickly realised. As a classic enthusiast, Tom Watkins, technician at the college took particular interest.

Dan Pritchard, Motor Vehicle lecturer said that training in hybrids and electrics were ‘an area the college were currently looking into. This new vehicle technology is going to play an important role in the future of the industry and it’s great to see examples of classics like the Fiat converted, and to know that this and others are available to view on our doorstep.’ Electric Classic Cars is based in Mid Wales and has produced a number of classic conversions which include a 911 Porsche, a 1972 Range Rover and a BMW E9. The business owned by Richard Morgan has quickly grown and Richard said how important it was that students now learn about electric vehicles to support both current builds and conversions. "There will be a greater demand in the forthcoming years for this knowledge and its surprising how many misconceptions already exist about battery powered cars."
