We want to be able to build a catalog of records and tapes by women that reflects our pasts, our presents and our futures. We want to discover and share with you music by women of all races, ages and classes...Women's music (written, performed and produced by women, on women's labels, for women)... music by, for and about lesbians... records documenting the herstory of women in music... music for children that doesn't insult their intelligence or bore them... political and non-sexist music... recordings by women from around the world and in foreign (to us) languages...recordings of women with non- traditional styles and instruments... music that reflects innovative contributions by women... and some hard-to-get and cut-out LPs. Many of the records we offer have been made by predominantly male record companies and include the work of male musicians, engineers, producers, etc. Until recently women musicians didn't have the idea to or couldn't afford to produce their own records or tapes, or didn't have access to the equipment or technology to do it. But their work laid the foundations of Women's music and was a source of inspiration and strength for many women throughout the years before we started taking our music into our own hands. Ladyslipper Music is interested in continuing to expand our listings. This catalog contains over twice as many records and tapes as our previous catalog. If you are looking for music by a particular artist or of a certain type, know of records or tapes we could include, or have criticisms or suggestions, please write. As the number of women working with Ladyslipper Music continues to grow, our diversity increases. We are Laurie Fuchs, Laura Rouzan, Sine Johnson, Joanne Abel, Cathy Johnson, Liz Snow & Kathy Tomyris. HOW DO WE DECIDE WHAT GOES IN THIS CATALOG? There are thousands of recordings by women that are available today, but a small amount In comparison to the number of records by men. In some of the distributors' catalogs we look through, well under 5% (sometimes under 1 %) of the albums feature a woman artist. From this relatively small selection we are attempting to choose those records that are not sexist or racist and that we think will be of interest to anyone looking for music by women. Our standards for which records we include and omit are not completely stabilized yet. We listen to records for their lyrical content, musical quality, production/technical quality, and relevance for women (this being our most subjective measure). Some of the records in our catalog, especially the reissues, come closer to having sexist lyrics than the more contemporary recordings. We feel that because these records are herstoncally significant for women, they should be included. We are more concerned with the lyrical content on more recent recordings. We have also chosen not to include records that are being currently distributed by major record labels. We feel that these records are probably getting sufficient exposure through airplay and availability in record stores and we do not wish to help out major labels, because they have often "LADYSLIPPER?" been exploitive of women. We do want to be supportive of talented women musicians who are recording non-sexist Our name comes from a most amazing & exquisite labial songs on whatever label they are on. We did it because there are so many records, and we hope it will make the catalog easier to follow. The problem is that music doesn't fit into neat categories. We think everything is of interest to feminists and all women, for example, but some records seem more directed to feminists than others. Many of the records should be cross-referenced but aren't, due to space limitations. So don't just trust our categories; read the reviews too. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLII, Number 2 Spring 2013 Invisible Woman: Vi Redd’s Contributions as a Jazz Saxophonist By Yoko Suzuki, University of Pittsburgh The story of alto saxophonist Vi Redd illustrates yet another way in which women jazz instrumentalists have been excluded from the dominant discourse on jazz history. Although she performed with such jazz greats as Count Basie, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, and Earl Hines, she is rarely discussed in jazz history books except for those focusing specifically on female jazz musicians. One reason for her omission is that jazz historiography has heavily relied on commercially produced recordings. Despite her active and successful career in the 1960s, Redd released only two recordings as a bandleader, in 1962 and 1964. Reviews of these recordings, along with published accounts of her live performances and memories of her fellow musicians illuminate how Redd’s career as a jazz instrumentalist was greatly shaped by the established gender norms of the jazz world. Elvira “Vi” Redd was born in Los Angeles in 1928. Her father, New Orleans drummer Alton Redd, worked with such jazz greats as Kid Ory, Dexter Gordon, and Wardell Gray. Redd began singing in church when she was five, and started on alto saxophone around the age of twelve, when her great aunt gave her a horn and taught her how to play. Around 1948 she formed a band with her first husband, trumpeter Nathaniel Meeks. She played the saxophone and sang, and began performing professionally.

FIRING THE CANON: MULTIPLE INSULARITIES IN JAZZ CRITICISM By © 2014 Christopher Robinson Submitted to the graduate degree program in American Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. ________________________________ Chairperson, Sherrie Tucker ________________________________ Randal Jelks ________________________________ Tony Bolden ________________________________ John Gennari ________________________________ William J Harris Date Defended: April 7, 2014 The Dissertation Committee for Christopher Robinson certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: Firing the Canon: Multiple Insularities in Jazz Criticism ________________________________ Chairperson, Sherrie Tucker Date approved: April 7, 2014 ii ABSTRACT Whereas many jazz scholars focus on jazz criticism's construction and implications of a single, or insular, jazz canon, this dissertation argues that what many jazz critics do is precisely the opposite. These critics disrupt the sense of a singular and insular jazz canon by challenging it through the creation of what I call an insularity, which is a bounded collection of artists and music with a definable tradition, values and established criteria which regulates what is suitable for inclusion. This dissertation argues that jazz does not consist of a single canon and music that exists beyond the canon's boundaries; rather, jazz contains multiple insularities that challenge the canon and vie for the opportunity to overthrow the canon in order to reach canonical status. This dissertation conceptualizes jazz critics as cultural authorities who create or deconstruct insularities through a variety of race, gender and nation projects. It examines the criticism of Leonard Feather, Val Wilmer and Nathaniel Mackey to highlight the numerous ways in which critics engage with multiple insularities.

Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLII, Number 2 Sprimg 2013 “Live From The East”: Pharoah Sanders in Brooklyn By Jeffrey Taylor, Brooklyn College, CUNY Though for most jazz historians Brooklyn remains in the shadow of Manhattan, two previous articles in this journal have documented a robust tradition that can be traced back as far as performances by The Creole Band at Coney Island in 1915.1 Though often paralleling musical developments across the East River, Brooklyn jazz has also been shaped by the unique dynamic of the borough’s ethnic and racial makeup, as well as the very spe- cial qualities of its many, often insular, neighborhoods.2 The historically black neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant in central Brooklyn, or “Bed-Stuy” as it is more commonly referred to, has long been a center of jazz, with its “Golden Age” of the 1940s and 1950s seeing performances by first-tier jazz musicians, includ- ing Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and many oth- ers. Though the popular imagination may now see Bed-Stuy primar- ily as a backdrop for Spike Lee movies, it boasts a black presence that goes far back into the 19th century, with the establishment of communities of freedmen in places such as Weeksville—now part of neighboring Crown Heights. With the construction of the A train in the mid-1930s, which connected Bed-Stuy with Harlem, the neigh- borhood became a cultural mecca that rivaled Manhattan’s larger and more famous African American community.

  • Ben Kelly UNIV 112 Integrated Research
Ben Kelly UNIV 112 Integrated Research How have women been systematically oppressed in Music [Ben Kelly] Women in Music Women in music as performers and as music makers and composers have historically been censored and shoved aside as artists to make way for males. Music performance and composition is still today a maledominated field, with women usually taking niche roles. As in the case of Vi Redd, jazz saxophonist, who said “‘he [Basie] didn’t let me play [alto saxophone] much because Marshal [Royal, the lead alto player for the Basie band] didn’t like it. When I was singing, they were happy, but as soon as I started playing, they didn’t like that.’Clearly she was accepted more as a singer than as a saxophonist” (Suzuki 8). This way of fitting women into a box musically occurs also in composition. Because composition in schools was so hostile towards women and because music has historically been so exclusive to men, women have taken to creating private womenonly composers organizations to compose with their kind, and without malicious scrutiny (Hershenson). However, the existence of womenonly group for composers is only a reminder of the problem, even if it is progression, says Ruth Schonthal (Hershenson). There are many barriers for women in the creation of music, not just as performers, where one might see them the most. Women as Music Makers Roberta Hershenson, freelance writer on musical subjects for the legendary newspaper The New York Times, in her article entitled “Female Composers Seeking Parity” paints a picture of the status of women composers in the 80’s and throughout history, and their fight for equal status.
