Take, for example, last winter and the worst snow drought I can remember since the 70’s (and, please, no old age jokes). The tagline on our ACMS Middle School Nordic Team sweatshirts said it all: “The Lost Winter.” And while many of us tried to cope with extra rollerskiing, “ hiking the Sierra Crest and riding our bikes through Yosemite — in JANUARY! — it still Ddidn’t make up for the fact that we lost much of the winter to the vagaries of our fickle weather gods. Global Warming? Perhaps. But, as they say, there’s no one weather occurrence that can be linked to Climate Change. Although having the earth’s atmosphere and oceans dramatically warming, whatever the causes, can never be a good thing for people who depend on frozen water for their recreational jollies. But, like for any downturn, the key is to be able to see the silver lining, and one of those is to recognize just how important sliding over the white stuff is to those of us who live and play in our mountain regions. And how the lack of it sure puts a damper on our endorphin and adrenalin-powered mood swings. (Not to mention our water supply and forest health). So what do we do about it? Well, lacking the ability to immediately turn down the Earth’s thermostat a few degrees and direct the Jetstream through the center of Northern California (how provincial of us), we need to just plan bigger and better events in the expectations that things (ie., snow) will be better this season. And our region has definitely done that. The first plus for this season is the revitalization of some of our local XC ski areas. While a couple of stalwarts — Tahoe XC and Kirkwood – continue with their strong programs, two others are giving us new and higher expectations for the Winter of ‘13. Royal Gorge, now under the umbrella of Sugar Bowl Resort and the management of JoJo Toeppner, looks to be re-born this year, and Tahoe Donner is showing more and more commitment to Nordic skiing by sponsoring high level races and hiring former ASC Nordic director Sally Jones. Another exciting event is the arrival of the U.S.S.A. SuperTour Finals in April, bringing many of the top skiers in the country (and possibly even the world) here to Truckee/Tahoe. But first, we start with a new event for everybody: the Lake Tahoe Nordic Festival, scheduled for December 14-16 (details at TahoeNordicFestival.com). And, if we really want to future-trip, how about the fact that Auburn Ski Club is scheduled — again — for Junior Nationals 2015! Now in the meantime, we just have to make sure they don’t go paving our paradise and putting up more parking lots. Mark Nadell, Nordic News Editor TABLE OF COntents Mother kNoWs Best . PRE-COMPETITION FACTS RUKA TRIPLE, FIN Stage 1: Ladies‘ / Men‘s Sprint Classic COMPETITION COURSE Ladies: 1,4 km Men: 1,4 km Bonus seconds: WEATHER FORECAST LADIES For the 10th season in a row, Ruka will host the first sprint event of the World Cup calendar (2008-2017). Marit Bjørgen (NOR) has won four of the previous 11 sprint World Cup events in Ruka (all classic style), most of all athletes and one more than Petra Majdic (SLO). Bjørgen's four sprint World Cup wins in Ruka, are joint-most for her at a single venue along with Lahti and Düsseldorf. Bjørgen is on five podium finishes in sprint World Cup events in Ruka, joint- most along with Majdic. Bjørgen has only recorded more sprint World Cup podium finishes in Davos (6) than in Ruka (5). Stina Nilsson (SWE) has won the last three sprint World Cup events (free and classic) and could become the first non-Norwegian to claim four victories in a row since Majdic in 2009. Nilsson has won each of the last five sprint World Cup events she participated in. The last time she failed to claim victory was in the sprint free in Davos on 11 December 2016 (31st). On 26 November 2016, Nilsson won the sprint classic in Ruka, her first ever World Cup victory in classic style. Only Maiken Caspersen Falla (NOR, 10) has claimed more sprint World Cup wins since the start of 2014/15 than Nilsson (9). Last season's sprint World Cup winner Falla has reached the podium in 14 of her last 15 sprint World Cup appearances with a 31st-place finish in Drammen (classic style) on 8 March as the only exception.

EN KVALITATIV TEXTANALYS MED GRUND I NARRATOLGI Ida Larsson & Linn Nordström [email protected] & [email protected] 2015-06-12 Handledare: Staffan Sundin 1 ABSTRACT On the 4th of July 2014, Norwegian ski star Petter Northug crashed his car in a drunk driving accident. The event became big news in both the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet and the Norwegian VG. The main question in this analysis is about the narrative in Aftonbladet and VG, regarding the event as well as Northugs persona, and if the narrative differentiates because of Northugs position as an antagonist in Sweden and a protagonist in Norway. To analyze the narrative in the various articles a self-designed narrative analysis, composed by what felt relevant and useful in the literature, was applied. The differences that were discovered could be linked to the analysis theories of national identity, the hero role and the media's way of using athletes, in this case Petter Northug, as either antagonist or protagonist. The literature stressed that sports journalism gladly uses opposites and there would probably be major consequences for both VG and Aftonbladet, who both are dependent on selling single copies, if they would get rid of the readers hero or villain in the ski world. 1.1 KEYWORDS Narrative, sports hero, national identity, Petter Northug, ski star, Verdens Gang, VG, Aftonbladet, hero roll, sports, cross country skiing.

  • Preview Ladies' 3-Days Tour Lillehammer - 30 Nov-2 Dec 2018
Preview ladies' 3-Days Tour Lillehammer - 30 Nov-2 Dec 2018 • Charlotte Kalla won last year's 3-Days Tour to become the first ever non- Norwegian winner of the opening mini tour in Ruka or Lillehammer. Therese Johaug triumphed in 2015 and Heidi Weng took the number one spot in 2016. • Three of the last four winners of the 3-Days Tour went on to win the overall World Cup title that season. In that run only Kalla in 2017/18 failed to claim the overall World Cup despite winning the opening mini tour. • Norway has claimed 17 of all 24 podium spots in 3-Days Tour history (71%). Only Sweden (4), Poland (2) and Finland (1) also managed to record a top-three finish in the competition. • Norway had at least two athletes on the podium in seven of the eight editions of the 3-Days Tour. • Weng is the only athlete to have reached the podium in both previous 3- Days Tours held in Lillehammer. Weng won the 2016 edition and finished in third place in 2014. • Jessica Diggins and Sadie Bjornsen are both hoping to become the first ever non-European winner of one of the Tours (3-Days Tour, Tour de Ski, World Cup Final, Ski Tour Canada). • Krista Pärmäkoski, fourth in last season's Tour de Ski, could become the second Tour winner from Finland after 2006/07 and 2008/09 Tour de Ski champion and 2007/08 World Cup Final winner Virpi Kuitunen. • Pärmäkoski, compatriot Anne Kyllönen and Ingvild Flugstad Østberg are the only athletes to have appeared in all 23 Tours since the start of 2010/11 (3-Days Tour, Tour de Ski, World Cup Final, Ski Tour Canada).
