Last November Thomas R. Sullivan was reelected for the usual four-year term to the post of District Attorney in Richmond County. Earlier in his career he had served for eight years from 1956 to 1964 as Chief Assistant District Attorney, during which period he handled every phase of the work of the District Attorney's Office. His agenda included investigations; presentation to the Grand Jury; preliminary matters in the Magistrates Court and the Criminal Court of the City of New York; misdemeanor trials before the Court of Special Sessions; felony trials before the County Court and the Supreme Court; and appeals before the Appellate Division, the Courts of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He personally tried approximately 50 per cent of all felony trials and argued almost all of the appeals. In 1964 he resigned from the District Attorney's office to become Executive Vice-President of his family's business, the Oceanic Service Corporation, a private security service, employing more than 300 men charged with supervising operations in over 35 locations throughout New York and New Jersey. MICHAEL F. CAPOBIANCO REV. THOMAS V. CONCAGH, C.M. THOMAS D. HOUCHIN MARGARET I. LANE BARBARA M. MENDOZA EDWARD STRAFACI REV. ROBERT J. SWAIN, C.M. ACADEMIC HERALDRY The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th century castles and halls of learning. The gown for the bachelor's degree has a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. It is primarily distinguished by its long pointed sleeves. The holder of a master's degree wears a gown with the same yoke effect as the bachelor's. The gown, however, is worn open, and the very long sleeve is squared and closed at the end, the forearm coming through a slit near the elbow. The gown for the doctor's degree is also worn open, it has broad velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the large, bell-like sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field oflearning to which the degree pertains. Generally, all caps may be of serge or broadcloth. In addition, doctor's caps may be of velvet and adorned by a gold tassel. The hood gives color and distinction to the academic costume. The hood - a black shell-like affair of varying size for the three degrees and material to match the gown - is silk-lined stressing the colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is then bordered with velvet of the color signifying the respective fields of learning.

The colors indicative of the various fields of learning are as follows: Arts and Letters ...... White Library Science ...... Lemon Laws ...... Purple Education ...... Light Blue Philosophy ...... Blue Science ...... , . . . . . Golden Yellow Fine Arts ...... Brown Business Administration . . . Light Brown Pharmacy ...... Green

It is important to note that the field of learning having prior mention in the conferment of a degree, and not the department governing the major work, determines the color that is proper for the velvet of the hood. The doctor of philosophy degree requires the blue velvet irrespective of the major field. If more than one degree is held, the gown and hood of the highest degree are worn.

Some of the institutional colors to be seen at an academic ceremony are as follows: Catholic University, lemon yellow with white chevron; Columbia, light blue with white chevron; Fordham, n'iaroon; Harvard, crimson; Manhattan, white with emerald green chevron; New York University, violet; St.John's University, bright red with white chevron. THE PRESIDENT'S MEDAL

EDWARD J. STRAFACI

An accounting major and economics minor in our

College of Business Administration, Edward Stra£aci

has gained the admiration and respect of his collegiate

peers by maintaining a commendable record of scholar

ship while being involved in multiple activities of a

responsible nature. Born in Brooklyn 21 years ago,

Ed is the son of Joseph F. and Marion Macri Stra£aci.

His one sister, Anne, is a sophomore at Notre Dame

College. He graduated from St. Bernadette's Parochial

School before entering Xaverian High School, where he

was Founder and President of the Kiwanis Key Club

and simultaneously Deputy Chief Squire of the Knights

of Columbus £or both Brooklyn and Queens. Since his

freshman year our honoree has been consistently on

the Dean's List and only recently was admitted to

Omicron Delta Epsilon, the National Economics Honor

Society of the College of Business Administration.

Elected president of his class during his junior

year, Edward Strafaci climaxed his accomplishments

in senior year by his election to the presidency of EDWARD J. STRAFACI

Student Government and the chairmanship of its Budget

Committee. In that capacity he has held the sensitive

responsibility of coordinating the 20 active organiza

tions on the Staten Island campus. Especially prized

by our Medalist is his involvement with Circle K, the

college division of the Kiwanis Club, which he founded

and presided over during his sophomore and junior

years, and £or which during his senior year he served

as Chairman of the Board. Designed to benefit the

school, the community, and the student whose awareness

of others' needs is heightened by such membership,

Circle K exists on over 900 campuses as the largest

collegiate organization in North America. It is to

be noted that under Ed's leadership, the St. John's

unit became the largest Circle K Club in the nation,

and thus merited singular recognition at the annual

New York State Convention, at which Ed himself won an

award as an outstanding Circle K member. Nominated

to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities,

he was also elected last year by his peers to prestigious

membership in The President's Society. Only this year

our honoree was inducted into the Brooklyn Hall of Fame

as an outstanding college leader. The Rotary Club

of Staten Island also presented him with a Service Award

£or his compassion £or the underprivileged. At different

times Ed has also served as Treasurer of the Acoounting EDWARD J. STRAFACI

Society, Chairman of the. Autumn Ball, and committee member £or the Staten Island campus Development Dinner

Dance. He holds.the distinction of being the only college student from New York City to be elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the United Nations

Association £or the United States of America. In the £all he will attend St. John's University School of Law. With pride and admiration, St. John's University confers her symbol of high esteem, The President's Medal, upon Edward J. Strafaci.
