    Soccer, Culture and Society in Spain Spanish soccer is on top of the world, at both international and club levels, with the best teams and a seemingly endless supply of exciting and stylish players. While the Spanish economy struggles, its soccer flourishes, deeply embedded throughout Spanish social and cultural life. But the relationship between soccer, culture and society in Spain is complex. This fascinating, in-depth study shines new light on Spanish soccer by examining the role this sport plays in Basque identity, consol- idated in Athletic Club of Bilbao, the century-old soccer club located in the birthplace of Basque nationalism. Athletic Bilbao has a unique player-recruitment policy, allowing only Basque- born players or those developed at the youth academies of Basque clubs to play for the team, a policy that rejects the internationalism of contemporary globalized soccer. Despite this, the club has never been relegated from the top division of Spanish soccer. A particularly tight bond exists between the fans, their club and the players, with Athletic representing a beacon of Basque national identity. This book is an ethnography of a soccer culture where origins, ethnicity, nationalism, gender relations, power and passion, life-cycle events and death rituals gain new meanings as they become, below and beyond the playing field, a matter of creative contention and communal affirmation. Based on unique, in-depth ethnographic research, Soccer, Culture and Society in Spain investigates how a soccer club and soccer fandom affect the life of a community, interweaving empirical research material with key contemporary themes in the social sciences, and placing the study in the wider context of Spanish political and sporting cultures.

Cuentan las crónicas que el partido no tuvo color, que estuvo constantemente dominado por un Athletic más acostumbrado al terreno de hierba. Autor: Mateusz Ryszkiewicz Wydział: Mechaniczny Prowadzący: mgr Magdalena Pracławska Athletic Bilbao, a właściwie Athletic Club de Bilbao jest hiszpańskim klubem piłkarskim. Został założony w roku 1898 w prowincji Biscay (Kraj Basków). Ośmiokrotny mistrz Hiszpanii, dwudziestoczterokrotny zdobywca Pucharu Króla, dwukrotny zdobywca Superpucharu Hiszpanii, finalista Pucharu UEFA, finalista Ligi Europy. Jeden z najstarszych i najbardziej utytułowanych klubów w hiszpańskiej piłce. Jego mottem jest: „z wychowankami i lokalnym wsparciem, nie potrzeba obcokrajowców”. Na przestrzeni dziejów był jedną z najważniejszych instytucji kształtujących baskijską świadomość narodową. Pseudonimy: Rojiblancos (Czerwono-Biali), Los Leones (Lwy). Trochę historii… Początki klubu ze stolicy Kraju Basków sięgają końca XIX wieku. Wtedy to do portowego miasteczka zawitali robotnicy angielscy, którzy w wolnym czasie grali w piłkę nożną (Anglia jest kolebką piłki nożnej, więc zamiłowanie Anglików do tego sportu dziwić nie może). Założyli oni pierwszy klub w mieście o nazwie Bilbao Football Club. W tych czasach z Wielkiej Brytanii powrócili do Kraju Basków również młodzi Baskowie, którzy studiowali za granicą. W 1898 roku wraz z uczniami Gimnasium Zamacois założyli klub o nazwie Athletic Club. Zaś w 1902 roku doszło do połączenia obu klubów i przyjął on nazwę Club Vizcava. Ostateczna nazwa Athletic Club de Bilbao została nadana w roku 1903. Co ciekawe, w tym samym roku baskijscy studenci założyli w Madrycie filię klubu o nazwie Athletic Club de Madrid. W późniejszych czasach zmienił on nazwę na Atletico Madryt i jest obecnie jednym z rywali Basków w hiszpańskiej ekstraklasie. Jedną z najważniejszych dat w historii klubu jest rok 1912.

In the latter half of the period (in contrast to the first half), Real Madrid won no trophies but was crowned the richest club in the world1. Meanwhile, after a disconcerting start, Barcelona won a UEFA Champions League and two La Liga titles, though it struggled financially. By analyzing the two clubs’ strategies and their financial and sporting performance over the chosen period we explore the different ways in which sports organizations can succeed, and how their success can be measured. The purpose of this study is to answer the following questions: What strategies did Real Madrid and Barcelona adopt to bring about this reversal of fortunes in a few short years? What variables explain the difference in outcomes? Are there any differences in their business and sports strategies? We use a matrix to analyze and relate the clubs’ financial and business strategy to their sports strategy.
