    Hangzhou, UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art 2012-2017 Membership Monitoring Report (22/11/2017) I. Executive Summary 1. Background On April 10, 2012, Hangzhou joined the Creative Cities Network (UCCN) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially, and became the first city in China conferred the title of “City of Crafts and Folk Art”. Hereafter, Hangzhou takes the opportunity of joining the UCCN and relies on the cultural and creative industry to give full play to the basis and advantages in crafts and folk art and take it as a major strategy to speed up the construction of a national center of culture and creativity. (On April 2012, Irina Bokova, Director-General of the UNESCO at that time signed the appointment of Hangzhou as an UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art.) 2.
