Produced and Directed by Charles Chauvel Rolling title (read by narrator): For eight months at Tobruk in 1941 fifteen thousand Australians and eight thousand British and Indian troops held a German army seven times their number and in seven times their armour. The Germans, understanding machines, but not these men, flung an insult to them in a name - "The Rats of Tobruk". This insult they carried on their bayonets right into the ranks of the oncoming German hordes. It has become one of the finest epitaphs of the war. To these men who could never be driven from their firing posts before Rommel, we pay homage - - "THE RATS OF TOBRUK" The credits don't provide a conventional character list: Grant Taylor Bluey Donkin Peter Finch Peter Linton Chips Rafferty Milo Trent Pauline Garrick Kate Carmody Mary Gay Sister Mary Ellis George Wallace the Barber of Tobruk Joe Valli the Northumberland Fusilier John Sherwood Walter Pym Norman Blackler Gilbert Ellis Robert Carlyle Joe Anderson Toni Villa Japanese soldier (Variant US DVD Head Credits at start of picture): Independent- International Pictures Corp. - logo an Independent-International Pictures Corp. release Copyright MCMLXIV Chamun Productions Copyright renewed Independent-International Pictures Corp.
