WMC PURPOSE (Article II of the WMC Constitution)
The purpose shall be to promote the physical and spiritual well being of its members and others by outdoor activities; to unite the energy, interests and knowledge of students, explorers and lovers of the mountains, deserts and rivers of Utah; to collect and disseminate information regarding the Rocky Mountains in behalf of science, literature and art; to explore and picture the scenic wonders of this and surrounding states; to foster awareness of 111cenic beauties; and to encourage preservation of our natural areas including their plant, animal and bird life. 2 I WASATCH MOUNTAIN CLUB BOARD REPORT I

Prospective members are welcome on all Club activities, with the following exceptions:
l) Thursday Evening Hikes are for members only. However, prospective members may attend if the hike is their second qualifying activity for membership and they submit their dues check and application form to the leader before the hike.
2) Boating trips are for members. However, prospective members may attend a weekend trip if they use the trip as their qualifying activity (each day counts as one activity.)
3) A trip leader may choose to limit a trip to members, especially if there is limited space.
THURSDAY EVENING HIKE INFORMATION
These hikes are for members only except prospective members may use them as the second and final qualifying activity for membership provided their dues check and application are submitted to the leader prior to the hike. Meet at 6:30 pm; all hikes leave the meeting place at 6:45 pm PROMPT! All participants must sign the liability release form. Hikes are never cancelled for any reason including bad weather, so wear appropriate clothing. Boots will be required if the trail is in mud or snow. No dogs. Hikes in Mill Creek Canyon meet in Olympus Hills parking lot at 3900 Wasatch Blvd. just south of the defunct Bagel Nosh. Hikes in Big Cottonwood meet at the "Storm Mountain Quartzites• geology sign, 2.9 miles up the canyon (r.h. side) from the stop light. Hike leader: Dale Green.
A WORD ABOUT WMC HIKES
The hike rating indicates the difficulty of the hike. Hikes rated under 5 are easy, 5-8 are intermediate, above 8 are difficult. If the rating says "about" (for example "about 4.0"), it means the rating is an approximate guide. A hike may be more difficult than the rating would suggest. Watch for the terms "exposure", "rock scrambling", "bush whacking", and "steep". These terms, and the rating system, are fully described in the April 1986 Rambler.
If you are just getting into hiking, you may find that a hike's description does not tell you everything you want to know. If so, don't feel shy about calling the leader ahead of time to be sure your abilities are a match for the hike, and to know if it is the kind of experience you are looking for. Please come to the hike with proper equipment: adequate clothing, footwear, food, water, and any special equipment required for that hike. You are expected to stay with the group once you have signed the release form. Do not jackrabbit ahead of the group, or pretend that you are "Tigger".
A WORD ABOUT WMC BICYCLE RIDES
Rides are rated Not Too Difficult (NTD), Moderate (MOD), or Most Difficult (MSD). These ratings are a subjective evaluation taking into consideration mileage and difficulty (hills). NTD rides will generally be less than 30 miles. MOD rides will be 30 to 50 hilly or up to 60 flat miles. MDS rides will be over 50 hilly or 60 flat miles. On all but n.ewcomer rides, it is required that riders be equipped to be self-sufficient, i.e., bring water, food, tire repair tools, extra tubes, ·repair knowledge, and money. Inexperienced riders or riders unsure of their ability on a bicycle should consider protective gear. Sunscreen is also suggested. Helmets may be required on certain rides.

July 1-4 MOUNTAINEERING HIGH CAMP - LONE PEAK CIRQUE. Instead of Fri.-Mon. driving, we'll be climbing at close and convenient Lone Peak. Featuring excellent climbing, camaraderie and fireworks (in the valley) too! Call John Kennington (942-0693) for details.
July 1-4 PAYETTE BOATING TRIP. Mike Dege has reserved a hot spring Fri.-Mon. campground for this weekend. A group will leave Thursday night and another on Friday making this a 3 or 4 day weekend. Rafters, canoeists, and kayakers are welcome to come and play. Planning meeting will be on Tuesday June 28th at the storage shed at 6:30 am. Call Mike at 571-7684 for details.
Sat. July 2 MT EVERGREEN ABOVE SIL VER LAKE HIKE. This is rated an easy 2.8. Interested hikers should assemble at 9:00 am at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Phone the leader Gayle Stockslager at 582-1429 for details.
Sat. July 2 BROADS FORK TO THE MEADOW HIKE. This is the second of the Two Meadows Series. Michael Wren will lead this easy-to-intermediate hike which is rated 4.6. Meet at 10:00 am at the east end of the parking lot at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon, whence a carpool will be formed to go to the trailhead. Bring lunch for a spread on the meadow among wildflowers. Call 277-5272 for additional information.
KESSLER PEAK FROM CARDIFF FORK HIKE. This peak has a prominent face which dominates the view from Reynolds Peak across the canyon. Rating is 7.4. Phil Berger is sure you will enjoy this hike. Meet him at 8:30 am at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Phone 266-8560.
MT RAYMOND HIKE. The route will be up Butler Fork and down by Hidden Falls. This popular loop trip is rated 7 .9. Ellie Ienatsch will lead an outstanding trip. Meet at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon at 9:00 am. She can be phoned at 272-2426.
July 2-4 UINTAS BACKPACK. A nine mile hike up the East Fork of the Bear River Sat.-Mon. will bring us to base camp at Allsop Lake. The layover day offers day hiking options. This trip is exploratory (the leaders haven't been there either.) Limit of 12. Register with leaders Allen Olsen & Ilka Allers-Olsen at 272-6305.
July 2-4 LASAL MOUNTAINS BACKPACK. There will be a short carry in of about Sat.-Mon. 3 miles from Warner Lake trailhead to set up camp in the Wet Fork of upper South Fork of Millcreek Canyon. An intermediate day hike is planned to the highest ridges from which panoramic views of Arches and Canyonlands can be enjoyed in this very alpine setting. Limit of 12 people. Register with Ann Cheves, evenings 355-0304 or days 538-4097. 7 Sun. July 3 FAMILY HIKE. Bring the little tots, senior citizens, and all other interested parties to the family hike to Cecret Lake. This is quite easy, barely registering a 1.2 on the WMC scale of difficulty. Chris Baierschmidt will assemble the group at 10:00 am at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Phone: 486-2529.
GREENS BASIN FROM DAYS FORK TRAIL HIKE. Plan for an easygoing and leisurely hike (rated 2.5) to an open meadow near the remains of pioneering mining activity. Call Richard Zeamer at 355-3751 for more information. Meet at 9:00 am at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon.
NEWCOMER'S HIKE TO CATHERINE PASS. (Oldtimers are also welcome) This scenic and easy hike is illustrated on the cover of the Wasatch Trails guide book. If the group feels like it, the hike may be extended to Sunset Peak. Catherine Pass is rated 3. 7. Sunset will add an additional 1. 7, if it is done. Rob Rogalski will lead the trip. Meet at 9:00 am at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Call 942-8142.
REYNOLDS PEAK VIA MILL D NORTH HIKE. Rated 5.2, this peak has an excellent view of Kessler Peak and Cardiff Fork. If you did Kessler yesterday, you could look back to see where you have been. Mike Hendrickson will launch the hike at 8:30 am. Meet him at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Phone 942-1476 for details.
HENEFER LOOP BIKE RIDE. (NTD) Meet leaders Heidi and Bruce Schatmeier at the turnout just east of Hogle Zoo on the left side of Emigration Canyon Road at 8:00 am for a leisurely jaunt over hills, down dales, through quiet country towns, and a short stretch along a nice noisy freeway past Devil's Slide. Carpool will leave the turnout at 8:00 am and the ride will commence at the East Canyon North Marina at 9:00 am. Call 363-1017 for more information.
Mon. July 4 FLAGSTAFF PEAK VIA GRIZZLY GULCH HIKE. Rating is about 5. Celebrate Independence Day by waving a flag from the summit of Flagstaff. Geoff Silcox will lead this outing. Meet at 8:30 am at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. For details call 531-6665.
EAST FORK OF MINERAL FORK HIKE. The seldom traveled trail to Silver Mountain Mine is half easy, half hard, and rated about 5.6. Shoes that cover your ankles, long pants, and at least one quart of wat~r are recommended. Join Martin McGregor at 9:00 am at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. For info call 967-9860.
THA YNES PEAK VIA THA YNES CANYON HIKE. This intermediate hike is rated 7 .1. Park at the old Bagel Nosh in the Olympus Hills Mall and carpool to the picnic area near the trailhead to minimize the impact on traffic and parking on this busy weekend. Leader Norman Pobanz will take off at 9:00 am. Phone 266-3703 for details.
MONDAY NIGHT BIKE RIDE. (NTD) Emigration Canyon. This will be a show and go ride. Meet near (but DO NOT park in) the Hogle Zoo parking lot. The lot is locked at 8:00 pm! Meet at 6:30 pm, leave at 6:45 pm.
8 July 4-8 WIND RIVERS BACKPACK. The trip will go in the Boulder, Wyoming Mon.-Fri. entrance. There will be lots of fishing and hiking opportunities. Limit of 8 people. The group should meet at Pinedale on the evening of July 3. Register with Mike Roundy at 278-9752.

Thu. July 7 THURSDAY EVENING HIKE. Big Cottonwood Canyon. See "Thursday Evening Hike Information" on page 4.
EVENING CLIMBING AT STORM MOUNTAIN. In the early evening, drive 3.3 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon to Storm Mountain Picnic Ground. The climbers usually congregate around the large boulder in the lower parking lot. Make your climbing or other intentions conspicuously known and you'll usually get some takers. Burgers served later after the work is done.
July 8-10 RIVER SAFETY COURSE. Ken McKarthy will show us what hazards exist Fri.-Sun. on the river, how to avoid them, and how to deal with problems when they occur. Cost is $30 per person. The course begins Friday night at Zion's Lutheran Church (1070 Foothill Blvd.) at 7:30 and continues Saturday through Sunday afternoon. July 8-16 ROGUE RIVER ADVANCED BOA TING TRIP. (Class III), with several class Fri.-Sat. IV's and one class VI (portage time!). Join us for the best in wild and scenic rivers. Four days on the permit section and a possible extra day upriver. Wildlife includes bear, otter, ring-tailed cat, and black tailed deer. MUSICAL HIKE. Carol Kalm invites everyone who plays an instrument (portable) or who can sing to join her for another sharing of music in a peaceful mountain setting. All levels of musicianship are always welcome at this informal happening. Please bring music suitable for. combinations of "C" instruments. Last year we had flutes, violins, recorders, kazoos, guitars, a bassoon, and a clarinet. The hike itself is rated easy. Meet at 9:30 am at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. For an easy woodland and meadow stroll, try this one. Ann Walthall will meet the interested parties at 9:00 am at the Olympus Hills Mall. Phone 521-2538.
LITTLE WATER PEAK HIKE. Rating 4.8. Plan to make this an outstanding hiking and gourmet experience. Bring exotic, tasty, and unusual snacks to trade. Sandra Taylor and Russ Wilhelmsen will lead. Join forces at 9:30 am at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. The number for information is 583-2306.
WHITE PINE LAKE HIKE. Meet Jim Nicol for an intermediate hike of 6.3 on the WMC scale. Meet at the geology sign at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon at 9:00 am. Phone 261-5857.
SUPERIOR PEAK FROM ALT A HIKE. There is a bit of EXPOSURE on this 6.9 hike. However it is easy to drop out if desired, because the route doubles back. Call the leader Clint Lewis at 322-8318 (work) or 295-8645 (home) for information. Gather at 9:00 am in the parking lot at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon.
FAIRFIELD BIKE RIDE. (MOD) This moderate ride of 40 miles visits the Camp Floyd State Historical Site in Fairfield,· at one time the home of the army sent to Utah by President James Buchanan to subdue the "Mormon Rebellion." Bring a lunch and meet Kermit Earle at 9:00 am in the Park and Ride lot just SW of the 5300 South exit of 1-15 to carpool to Lehi. For more information call 268-2199.
LITTLE WILLOW (AKA DEAF SMITH) CANYON HIKE. After getting by the initial hassle of a cruddy trailhead access, this is a beautiful, seldom hiked canyon. It is narrow, shaded, and shows little evidence of the impact of man. The hike will go up a stream bed, intermittant trail, a moderate amount of bushwhacking, and terminate near a cirque abutting Twin Peaks. A very worthwhile hike. Rating is undefined but probably around 5 to 7. Clayton Benton will lead off at 9:00 am from the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Phone: 277-2144.

LAKE BLANCHE HIKE. One of the most popular hikes takes you to the base of the Wasatch Mountain Club's emblematic mountain - Sundial. Rating is 5.7. Ralph Hathaway will do an early start at 8:30 am from the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Call 583-3240. Bring water and V-8 juice.
SUNDIAL HIKE. Go to the summit of the Club's emblem mountain. Rating is 9.9 with significant EXPOSURE on the summit. PROVO PEAK HIKE. The time is here for the second in the BYU series. If you liked Heritage Mountain last month, you will love this one. Rating is an estimated 5 plus or minus. Meeting place: Front of the Bagel Nosh in the Olympus Hills Mall at 9:00 am. Howard Wilkerson (277-1510) will lead a great hike.
TIMPANOGOS HIKE. Sanjay Prakash will decide whether to go via Aspen Grove or Timponeke. The former is shorter but has more elevation gain, the latter is longer but not so high. The rating is 11.6 either way. Gather in the parking lot at Denny's at 4500 South and 1-15 at 8:30 am. Sanjay can be phoned at 485-8195. Challange yourself.
RED PINE LAKE HIKE. Rated 5.3. Lower and Upper Red Pine Lakes are the prettiest in the Wasatch (in the opinion of this scribe.) Randy Long will hike with those interested in these jewels; meet him at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon at 9:00 am. Randy can be phoned at 943-0244.
WALLSBURG BIKE RIDE. (MOD) This 41 mile ride meanders thru scenic Heber Valley, passes Dear Creek Reservoir, and tours sleepy Round Valley. The terrain is flat to slightly rolling over mostly rural back roads. Bring a picnic lunch, or purchase one in Wallsburg. DESSERT AND DANCING AT THE LODGE. Come for dessert and stay for Square Dancing! Bart Bartholoma, accredited square dance caller, will get us into "the swing" of things. No experience needed! PFEIFFERHORN VIA MA YBIRD LAKES HIKE. One of the best in the Wasatch, this hike goes through dense canyon forests, to the sub-alpine 12 Maybird Lakes, through massive boulder fields, then some difficult scrambling up to the ridge line from whence the ascent to the triangular summit. Altitude is 11,326 feet. WMC rating is 9.9. It's fantastic. Meet Bob Myers at 9:00 am at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. DEVILS CASTLE HIKE. This is not your normal 5-rated hike - there is lots of exposure on loose black shale. However, you need not go all the way to the top. AMERICAN FORK TWIN PEAKS VIA AMERICAN FORK CANYON HIKE. This is a new route, or at least a route not frequently done by the Club. Summit elevation is 11,489 which is the highest peak in Salt Lake County. Rating is about 9. Dennis Caldwell will depart at 7:30 am from the parking lot at Denny's at the 4500 South exit on 1-15. BEA TOUT BACKWARDS HIKE. If you thought the regular Beatout was hard, how about the Swanson version? Starting up through Bells Canyon it goes around to South Thunder Peak, perhaps with a side trip to nearby Chipman Peak, along ridges to Pfeifferhorn and from there down Red Pine Canyon. Whew! WHITE PINE LAKE HIKE. Kathleen Romanofski assures the editorial staff that this hike will be at a leisurely pace. The rating of 6.3 puts it in the intermediate category, but the smooth trail and steady elevation gain should make it not-too-bad. Meet at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon at 9:00 am. NAOMI PEAK HIKE. This intermediate hike rated about 6 is located in the Bear River Range at the head of Logan Canyon. Tired of the same old thing? Try this fine peak in a different locale. DOG DAYS HIKE TO DOG LAKE (where else?) Rating 3.0. The head dog John Flakowski says he will lead all you bow-wows up to Dog Lake. The hike leaves at 8:30 am from the geology sign at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Phone 484-6725. P.S. WHITE FIR PASS HIKE. An easy-going hike rated 3.1 will take you to the pass from which you can view most of Porter Fork. Louise Hollander can be phoned at 277-14 I 6 for information. She will leave from the Olympus Hills Shopping Center, from west of Bagel Nosh at 9:00 am.
MONTE CRISTO VIA ALTA HIKE. Rating 7.7. The route goes via Cardiff Pass up to Mt Superior and over a short ridge run to Monte Cristo. There is Exposure on the ridge from Cardiff Pass to Superior. Aug 18, 20-21 RIVER TRAINING COURSE. This course will teach you how to read the Thu., Sat.-Sun. river, the different paddling strokes to use, and help you put them together and work effectively with others. This course is for beginning to intermediate canoeist or kayakers, or intermediate paddle boaters. The 1st day, Thursday, August 18 we will meet at the Zion Lutheran Church (1070) Foothill Blvd.) at 39 .. ! !
7:30 pm and we will learn how to read the river. Friday afternoon at 5:30 pm we will meet at the boat house and leave for Alpine Canyon. Saturday we will run the Snake River in canoes from Wilson Bridge down (all flat water) and will learn river techniques and paddling strokes. Sunday we will do Alpine Canyon from Elbow West down to Sheep Gulch (also in canoes). There will be a $15.00 fee for Thursday's class, $5.00 canoe or paddle boat rental fee, and about $40.00 for the weekend at Alpine. Day forming an Alliance for Interpretive Natural Areas. Holiday Payless Rent-A-Car has had some concerns over treatment of their vans, specifically I) damage done to the van roof from roof racks and to bumpers from trailers, and 2) the heavy load on their vans from towing trailers, and from carrying roof racks and 15 people. Holiday sells their vans after two years and are concerned about the value of the vans if they have been abused. They have agreed to continue to allow our use of their vans with roof racks and trailers under the following conditions:
1) The largest trailer allowed is a 5' X 8' trailer. Also when using a trailer, remove the plastic strip that covers the back of the bumper where the trailer hitch fits. Put in inside the van and remember to replace it after the trip is over.
2) Never stand or walk on the roof of the van. To tie up kayaks or canoes, stand on a cooler, the step ladder, or whatever. Someone told me once that they couldn't tie their kayak on without standing on the roof; if you feel that way, leave the kayak or canoe at home. It is more important not to stand on the roof than to take kayaks or canoes.
3) No more than 12 people in the van. No big deal; it'll be more comfortable with only 12 people on the van. I get claustrophobic in a loaded van anyway.
4) We lose the 10% discount. C'est la vie.
A note about loading trailers. Although the instructions on loading trailers say to load at least 60% of the weight to the front of the mid-line of the trailer, in this case more is not better. There are two weight-bearing components of a trailer, the trailer wheels and the van bumper. If you put too much of the weight in a trailer forward, most of the weight in and of the trailer will rest on the bumper. The bumpers are expensive. The trip will pay any damage to the van bumper caused by the trailer (or to the roof caused by the roof rack). Load 60% of the weight forward but not much more than that. The proper weight-bearing components of a trailer are the wheels.
These new rules do not just apply for Club boating trips but for anyone in the WMC who rents vans with the intention of using them to carry a roof rack and/or a trailer. These new rules are in granite; think of them as having come down the mountain engraved on tablets. Our relationship with Holiday is important and we would like to continue it. Thanks everybody.

Little Joe rapid had a sizable hole at the top which threw Ken Lovisa out of his oar rig. This was the first time I ever saw an oarsman do a self rescue! He crawled back in his boat by grabbing the cargo net. He survived with some scratches and bruises.

On May 28, Ellie Ienatsch led six hikers up Beartrap Fork to the ridge. The creek was very low and small amounts of snow were only on the northeast facing slopes 2/3 of the way up the trail. The trail is on the east side of the creek for 2/3 of the trip and there are cairns to mark the crossing to the west side of the Photo by Guy Benson creek. ANSWER TO JUNE The Forest Service is in need of volunteers to CROSSWORD PUZZLE assist in monitoring trail usage on the Wasatch Front this summer. Volunteers will distribute low-impact information, monitor the numbers and type of visitors, identify problem areas with respect to trail maintenance and vandalism, and otherwise assist the Forest Service in a program designed to educate the public on proper conduct in the National Forest. Activities will focus primarily on the trail heads at White Pine, Mill D South, Mill D North and Bigwater on Saturdays, Sundays, and perhaps on Friday afternoons. Volunteers will probably be asked to work one day a month. Such educational contacts have become a necessity as more and · more people seek recreation in the National Forests. This is your opportunity to lend a helping hand in the preservation of our trails.
