DLNR Beach Project

Waikīkī Beach Restoration Project State of Hawai‘i Department of Land & Natural Resources

Waikīkī Beach will have 24,000 cubic yards of sand pumped from deposits 2,000 feet offshore by the State’s latest beach replenishment project. The additional sand will be enough to add 40 feet of beach in the area fronting the Royal Hawaiian, Outrigger Waikīkī, Moana Surfrider and Kūhiō Beach Park to the Kūhiō Beach Basins.

Currently in the permitting stage, the total program is projected to cost $2 - $3 million dollars. The State of Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) views the plan as a beach maintenance program. The intention is to restore the beach to the 1982 width. The permit would also allow two subsequent efforts within five to seven years where the sand pumping would have to be repeated. This entire area of Waikiki Beach was originally man-made and requires periodic sand refill and maintenance. continued

Off-shore sand deposits are estimated at 65,000 to 70,000 CY with approximately 50% of it recoverable. The source appears to be renewable as the deposits used in the 2006 Kūhiō Beach project have been naturally replenished.

The funding will come from a variety of sources: DLNR Coastal Land Fund, private contributions, and potentially the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority. The project is expected to commence early in 2011 but is dependent on the availability of funds. The Waikīkī Improvement Association was instrumental in acquiring the initial funding, $1.5 million for the planning and permitting and execution, and will work with DLNR to secure the money necessary to complete the project.

Sunset on the Beach takes place this Saturday, December 19 and Monday, December 21. See attached pdf for more details

Wishes come true for four children

On Friday, December 4, 2009, four children, ages five to seventeen, illuminated hearts and the Great Hall at Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa. The lighting ceremony which featured Make A Wish Foundation® Hawaii also included special appearances from: emcee Jai Cunningham, KHON 2; Anuhea; Miss Hawaii USA, Renee Nobriga; Miss Hawaii Teen USA, Julianne Chu; and Na Leo Pilimehana.

The goal of the Make A Wish Foundation is to help make a dream that seems impossible come true for young people who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. According to Make-A-Wish Foundation®Hawaii, approximately fifty wishes are made each year. With the help of the annual Swing for Wishes golf tournament, Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa has been responsible for fulfilling the wishes of at least twenty-five children in three years.

This year, Swing for Wishes raised $60,000. The donation is being used to make a variety of wishes come true, these include: seeing a Cleveland Cavaliers game, visiting American Samoa, meeting Chef Duff from Food Network’s Ace of Cakes, and enjoying the excitement and fun at Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

“We are grateful to the Hyatt Regency Waikiki management and employees and their industry associates for helping us continue to make the magic happen for island kids and their families. The smiles on children’s faces whose wishes are granted because of the generosity are the best thank you,” says Lyn Brown, executive director of Make A Wish Foundation of Hawaii.

"We are proud to honor Hyatt's longstanding commitment to making a difference and supporting the community, even during difficult times,” says David Lewin, general manager Hyatt Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa.

“The Make-A-Wish Foundation and Global Hyatt are partners because we have common goals; we both provide hospitality and we both make wishes come true,” adds Lewin.

The lighting ceremony also honored the Waikiki Community Center. The local resource - who assists families of preschool, elementary, high school students as well as supporting senior citizens - received a check for $17,400 at the lighting ceremony.

Hau Tree Lanai Restaurant wins Honolulu Magazine Gold Award

When Honolulu residents choose to celebrate life in an island city or entertain out of town visitors, many will go to the Hau Tree Lanai Restaurant for its wonderful beachside ambiance beneath the leafy canopies of ancient hau trees. Now, the readers of Honolulu magazine have confirmed what most residents have long known to be true, that the Hau Tree Lanai is “Honolulu’s best restaurant for outdoor dining.” And the magazine has made it official by bestowing the Hau Tree Lanai with the Gold Award for “Best Outdoor Dining” as part of the publication’s 25th annual Hale Aina awards.

The restaurant and its unique setting at the foot of Sans Souci beach have won numerous accolades for its ambiance. In fact, the famous Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson wrote about the site, "If anyone desires such old fashion things as lovely scenery, quiet, pure air, clear sea water, good food and heavenly sunsets hung out before his eyes over the Pacific and the distant hills of Waianae, I recommend him cordially to Sans Souci beach.” J.P. Cercillieux, the hotel’s executive vice president and general manager says that he and the Hau Tree Lanai staff feel they are responsible for a unique part of Honolulu’s history as much as they are for running one of the city’s most popular restaurants.

Hau Tree Lanai Restaurant chef Rene Caba celebrates the restaurant’s special location with a equally inviting breakfast, lunch and dinner menus that offer local favorites as well as traditional continental cuisine. The breakfast menu includes “Loco Moco,” a local working man’s favorite combination of corned beef hash and cutlet of ground chuck, pork, and sausage, on a bed of rice, topped with an egg and mushroom gravy. But by far the most popular breakfast is one of the restaurant’s varied preparations of Eggs Benedict. Choose from Eggs Benedict Kaimana (traditional preparation) to Salmon Benedict Florentine, Crab Benedict or the Garden Benedict (Benedict with sliced vine-ripened tomatoes and sautéed spinach). A popular lunch item is the fresh-from-the-sea Scampi and Mahi Burger. The lunch menu also offers a wide variety of hot and cold entrees. The dinner menu includes fresh fish entrees including the popular Chinese Steamed Opakapaka. Equally requested are the Colorado lamb chops, flame broiled filet mignon and Hawaiian grilled chicken.

Like Caba, who has been at the restaurant for 20 years (the last five years as chef) many of the 40 restaurant staff count their tenure in decades, not months or years. Maitre D' Mathew Leong has been at the Hau Tree Lanai Restaurant for 30 years and the average length of service for staff is 15 years. The result, according to food and beverage manager Jay Walfhoff, is a staff that works together seamlessly, easily acknowledges repeat patrons and accommodates special requests.

The New Otani’s other popular restaurant, Miyako, didn’t get a nod this year from Honolulu magazine readers as a favorite location for outdoor dining, perhaps because its outdoor lanai tables were added just within the last year or so. But the outside cabana tables, or those inside, overlook Sans Souci beach from the hotel’s third floor and offer some of the best views of Waikiki Beach and the Waianae mountain range in the distance. Sunsets are often spectacular.

While the Hau Tree Lanai comes quickly to mind, the Miyako is less well known. But Cercillieux thinks that this is destined to change, and for good reason. The restaurant offers some of the most authentic Japanese cuisine in Honolulu. The Tokyo-trained chef meticulously prepares and presents favorite dishes like nabe, sushi, sashimi, donburi, Kobe steak and many varieties of fresh fish. Unique at the restaurant is the Kaiseki seasonal menu, which changes monthly to feature the freshest seasonal items available. Guests can also choose from eight private tatami rooms. Those who are unfamiliar with Japanese cuisine will find Miyako’s friendly and knowledgeable waitresses, all of whom wear kimonos, very helpful.

Hawai‘i Convention Center recognized again by Business Traveler magazine

Business Traveler Magazine, the world’s leading publication geared towards frequent business travelers, has awarded the Hawai‘i Convention Center with its 2010 Best in Business Travel award in the category of Best Conference or Convention Center: City. This is the second year in a row that the Center has received this honor in the category that was first introduced last year.

The award was presented on December 10 at a formal awards gala held in Los Angeles.

“We are deeply honored to be selected by Business Traveler Magazine as the Best Conference or Convention Center/City for two consecutive years,” said Joe Davis, SMG general manager of the Hawai‘i Convention Center. “It is evident that the effectiveness of our business development initiatives and international outreach efforts is being validated by this most prestigious award. We are driven to be the destination of choice for savvy business travelers and convention attendees. Another prime example of Hawai‘i’s desirability as a prime business destination is its selection by President Barack Obama to host the prestigious 2011 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Meetings.”

“We must also share this award with our many destination partners and the great city of Honolulu whose government and citizens truly make our great city deserving of this award,” Davis added.

Winners were chosen using the following criteria: · Two-thousand (2000) Business Traveler subscribers were randomly selected and mailed surveys. · Two-thousand (2000) Business Traveler digital subscribers were randomly selected and e-mailed surveys. · Survey consisted of open-ended questions with no suggested names or choices given. · Respondents were given two reply options, online or by postage-paid return envelope, depending on how they received the survey. Online submissions required a unique code to prevent multiple or fraudulent entries.

SMG markets and manages the Hawai‘i Convention Center under the direction and support of the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA), the state’s tourism agency. The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority was created in 1998 to ensure a successful visitor industry well into the future.
