  • WOLVERHAMPTON CHRONICLE 1860 to 1869 1 4 January 1860
WOLVERHAMPTON CHRONICLE 1860 to 1869 1 4 January 1860 STAFFORDSHIRE QUARTER SESSIONS STEALING IRON AT SEDGLEY George Hughes, boatman, indicted for stealing 56 lbs of iron, the property of the London and North Western Railway Company, at Sedgley, was found guilty and sentenced to twelve months imprisonment. 2 18 January 1860 TIPTON DISTRESSING OCCURRENCE On Tuesday, an inquest was held at Swan Village on the body of Joseph Timmins, a boatman 20 years of age. On the preceding Saturday morning, deceased, in company with a man named William Smith, was on the canal with an empty boat, going to Tipton. When past Dudley Port, and near the canal bridge there, they came to a turn in the course of the canal and, meeting with another boat, a collision ensued between the two. Deceased, who stood up in the end of his own boat, fell into the water, and being able to swim, kept himself afloat until his companion, Smith, had nearly reached the side where he was, but at this moment he sank to the bottom of the canal, overcome, it is supposed, by the effects of the cold. Smith at once got out the body of deceased, and calling for help, a man named Griffiths, in the employ of the Canal Company, came up, and seeing that deceased was insensible, merely blew down his throat. This producing no apparent effect, he said, “I don't see that there's any life in him, and I'll take him to Tipton”. This course was pursued, and after taking the deceased to an office by the canal side, where he was laid still breathing, poor Timmins was conveyed to a public house in Tipton, a distance from this office of more than 300 yards.

  • Description of the Works on the Netherton Tunnel Branch of the Birminghamcanal.” by JAMESRALPH WALKER, M
NETTIERTON TUNNEL. 263 February 7, 1860. GEORGE PARKER BIDDER, President, in the Chair. The following Candidates were balloted for, and duly elected : THOMASMASTERMAN HARDY JOHNSTON, EDWARD PUSSEE, JAMES LAURIERICKARDS, RICHARD JAMES WARD, FRANCIS WILLIAM ISHERWOOD WEST, AND EDWAKDLEADER JTILLIAMS, junior, as Members ; EDWARDMIDDLETON BAI~RY, EDWIN BARTON, FREDEMCKROBERT BROWNING, ANDREW CUTHELL, THOMAS BARNABASDAFT, ROCHPORT ASTLE SPERLING, and JAMESWIL- SON, as Associates. No. 1,017.--“ Description of the Works on the Netherton Tunnel Branch of the BirminghamCanal.” By JAMESRALPH WALKER, M. Inst. C.E. THEsystem of inland navigation was introduced into South Staf- fordshire at anearly period. Withoutthe facilities which it afforded for the conveyance of minerals and heavy goods, the mining and manufacturing industry of the district could not have been developed to its present extent. Thatits advantages have been appreciated may be inferred from the fact, thatthe Bir- mingham Canal Company now possesses 157 miles of canal, the ramifications of which reach nearly every colliery and ironwork in the district. Notwithstanding the construction of several railways, on which a large quantity of mineral produce is carried, the traffic on the canal continues to increase. In 1832, the total quantity of coal conveyed was 1,492,000 tons ; and in 1854, it had increased to 3,100,000 tons. The canal is onseveral levels, namedafter the chief towns situatedon them. The Wolverhampton Level is 524 miles in length, and 484 feet 3 inches above low water at Liverpool. The Birmingham Level is 34; miles in length, and l9 feet 104 inches below the Wolverhampton Level. The Walsall Level is 20 miles in length, and 45 feet below the Birmingham Level.

09 September 2017 • Talk to the charity that’s work keeps the Walsall Canal thriving • Rare opportunity to venture to the bottom of a drained canal lock at special visitor open day • A day of fun with activities on offer for all the family Vital repair work is underway by the charity the Canal & River Trust, as part of a £10,000 project to keep the Walsall Canal in good condition for the local community. As part of the work, the Trust is holding a special event to give visitors the chance to explore Lock 5 on this flight of locks, which runs through the heart of Walsall in the West Midlands. The Trust’s team of experts, including engineers, apprentices and ecologists, will be on hand to explain about the history of the canal in Walsall, the work of the charity and the impressive works carried out to the lock. Additionally, visitors to the event will be able to try their hand at canoeing and fishing at taster sessions running throughout the day. A display of all the weird and wonderful things found in the canal will also be on show at the event, and visitors will be able to sample the tasty delights made by local food traders. Keith Bradfield, the Canal & River Trust’s supervisor on the Walsall Canal says: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to give people a rare behind-the-scenes visit to their local canal as they have never seen it before, and probably never will again. The team will all be there on Saturday 23rd September to answer any questions and explain about the works we’ve done, which would have been almost exactly how it was done 200 years ago.” The bottom gates at lock 5 are nearing the end of their life due to wear and tear and rot.

  • Proceedings of the Dudley and Midland Geological & Scientific
PROCEEDINGS OF THE DUDLEY AND MIDLAND GEOLOGICAL & SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY, AND FIELD CLUB. No. 2. PUBLISHED HALlr-YEARLY. July, 1583 A COMMITTEE MEETING was held at Dudley, October 30th, 1862, present Messrs. Beckett, Fraser, Capewell, and the Secretaries. The following Members were elected :—George England, Miss M. Fellows, Rev. R. Twigg, J. R. Robinson, Henry Eagles, S. Evans, Rev. Dr. Browne, Rev. J. C. Browne, F. Simpson, J. Whitly, G. Jabet, T. Baker, T. H. Hatton, W. Marsh, F. Aulton, J. Bowen, H. Roper. Arrangements were made for holding a joint Public Meeting and Scientific Exhibition with the Committee of the Mechanics' Institute, on the occasion of laying the Foundation Stone of the Dudley Institute, the proceeds, if any, to be devoted to the Building Fund. It was resolved that the proceedings of this Society be issued half-yearly, as soon after December and June in each year, as practicable. As the Committee had no room of their own and as it was thought desirable to have Meetings of the Society during the winter, a series of Field Meetings was arranged to be held in the months of November, December, January, and February. The first winter field meeting was held on November 11th, at Pouk Hill, a Basaltic patch about midway between Walsall and Willenhall. Seventeen members of the Society mustered from various points, and by eleven o'clock were in the famous quarry which lies hidden in the summit of a small rising ground just to the right of the high road. The peculiarity of the Basalt in this place consists in the well defined columns which lie exposed along the whole of the northern face.
