He studied English and Theatre at the University of Puget Sound, graduating with a B.A. degree in English Writing, Rhetoric, and Culture in 1999. Pannill began pursuing a master’s degree that year in theatre studies at Brown University, which he completed in 2001. During the course of his studies for this degree he directed The Wild Duck by Henrik Ibsen at Brown’s Production Workshop and Mac Wellman’s Dracula on the theatre department’s mainstage, for which productions he was awarded the Weston Award for Theatre Directing in 2001. After spending a year living and working in New York City and a year creating English language instruction materials for the Spanish Army in Madrid, Pannill returned to Providence in 2003 to begin work on his doctorate in theatre and performance studies in the Ph.D. -

KALEIDOSKOP Zauberer durch Wind und Wetter Der amerikanische Zauberkünstler, Dozent Jeff McBride: Meine erste Begegnung mit PAUL und Lehrmeister Jeff McBride über seinen KIEVE fand in den späten 1980ern in Italien langjährigen Freund Paul Kieve statt. Ich spielte im Norden Italiens in Disko - theken und Thea tern meine Shows. An einem dieser Abende, kurz ehe ich auf die Bühne musste, klopften zwei Briten an meine Gar - dero bentür. Es war Paul mit seinem Assis - tenten. Sie erzählten, dass sie sich vier Stun - den lang durch Wind und Wetter gequält haben, um meine 20-Minuten-Show anzusehen. Paul gestand, dass er ein großer Fan meiner Art zu zaubern war. Was ich damals jedoch noch nicht wissen konnte, ist, dass ich von diesem Abend an mit Paul eine bis heute andauernde Freund - schaft pflegen würde und dass auch ich einer seiner größten Fans werden würde. Manchmal ist das Leben schon komisch. Nach meiner Show diskutierten wir bis in die frühen Morgenstunden über Zauberei, Kunst und Theater. PRESS RELEASE (FEB 2019) NEW NATIONAL THEATRE, TOKYO NEW NATIONAL THEATRE, TOKYO 2019/2020 SEASON BALLET & DANCE THE NATIONAL BALLET OF JAPAN New National Theatre, Tokyo (NNTT) announced the 2019/2020 Ballet & Dance Season, the final season under the Artistic Director, Noriko OHARA, which features 38 performances of 6 ballet works including 5 full-length narrative ballet, and 11 performances of 3 dance pieces. The Final Season for Noriko OHARA as Artistic Director of Ballet and Dance at the New National Theatre, Tokyo Noriko OHARA became the Ballet Mistress of the company in 1999, Assistant Director in 2010 before assumed office as the Artistic Director in September 2014. During these 20 years ever since the company was founded, she has nurtured and led the dancers for The National Ballet of Japan to become the leading company in Japan. This season's line-up sums up this company's best works thus far. The season will open in October with Kenneth MACMILLAN's "Romeo and Juliet", an exemplar of the dramatic ballet tradition. This will be followed by "Manon" in February and March. Both works will showcase the company's expressive richness and depth. Christmas season will feature Wayne EAGLING's "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King". Reception and Adaptation: Magic Tricks, Mysteries, Con Games by Joseph Daniel Culpepper A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto © Copyright by Joseph Daniel Culpepper 2014 Reception and Adaptation: Magic Tricks, Mysteries, Con Games Joseph Daniel Culpepper Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto 2014 Abstract This study of the reception and adaptation of magic tricks, murder mysteries, and con games calls for magic adaptations that create critical imaginative geographies (Said) and writerly (Barthes) spectators. Its argument begins in the cave of the magician, Alicandre, where a mystical incantation is heard: "Not in this life, but in the next." These words, and the scene from which they come in Tony Kushner's The Illusion, provide the guiding metaphor for the conceptual journey of this dissertation: the process of reincarnation. The first chapter investigates the deaths of powerful concepts in reader-response theory, rediscovers their existence in other fields such as speech-act theory, and then applies them in modified forms to the emergent field of performance studies. Chapter two analyzes the author as a magician who employs principles of deception by reading vertiginous short stories written by Jorge Luis Borges. I argue that his techniques for manipulating the willing suspension of disbelief (Coleridge) and for creating ineffable oggetti mediatori (impossible objects of proof) suggest that fantastic literature (not magical realism) is the nearest literary equivalent to experiencing magic performed live. With this Borgesian quality of magic's reality-slippage in mind, cross-cultural and cross-media comparisons of murder mysteries and con games are made in chapter three. -
