SHINING BRIGHT Elias Pettersson, who led all rookies with seven goals and 10 points in eight games (7-3—10), was named the NHL’s “Rookie of the Month” for October. Pettersson, who paced rookies in goals and points despite missing six games due to injury, registered 1-1—2 in his NHL debut Oct. 3 and 2-1—3 in his second outing Oct. 6. He became the fourth player in Canucks history to collect multiple points in his League debut and the second – along with Thomas Gradin (4-1—5 in 1978-79) – to record five points through his first two NHL appearances. Pettersson ultimately extended his career-opening point streak to five games (53—8), becoming the second player in Vancouver history – along with Don Tannahill (3-2—5 in 5 GP in 1972-73) – to achieve the feat. Pettersson added his sixth and seventh goals Oct. 29, making him the 21st player in League history – and eighth in the modern era – to reach that total through seven career NHL contests.

MOVING NORTH With a win Oct. 31/18 against the Blackhawks, the Canucks moved past the Sharks (6-3-3, 15 points) and Flames (7-5-1, 15 points) to advance to first place in the Pacific Division standings. Vancouver enters the month of November with sole possession of the most points in its division for the sixth time in franchise history (also 1979-80, 1991-92, 1999-00, 2003-04 and 2005-06).

QUICK HITS (through Oct. 31/18) • Elias Pettersson leads all rookies in goals (7) and points (7-3-10). He ranks t-26th in the league in points per game (1.25). He is also the only rookie to have scored in five or more consecutive games this season. • Bo Horvat ranks second in face-off wins (168), first in even-strength face-off wins (137) and first in faceoffs taken (305). • Alex Edler shares the League-lead in blocked shots (39) while Chris Tanev ranks t-15th (24).

THE GOING RATE • Elias Pettersson has registered at least a point in six of eight career games played • Bo Horvat has six points (4-2-6) over his past eight games • Troy Stecher has four points (1-3-4) over the last seven games • Brock Boeser has seven points (2-5-7) over his last ten games

Colorado Avalanche: Media Notes

UPCOMING GAMES (TV, Radio) Fri, Nov. 2 at Vancouver - 8 p.m. MT (Altitude / 92.5 FM) Wed, Nov. 7 vs. NASHVILLE - 8 p.m. MT (NBCSN / AM 950)

LAST GAME (Nov. 1) - Colorado 5 at Calgary 6 The Flames overcame a 4-1 deficit to beat the Avalanche 6-5 at the Saddledome. Vladislav Kamenev and Sheldon Dries tallied their first career goals, and Gabriel Landeskog, Carl Soderberg and Colin Wilson also scored. Semyon Varlamov made 31 saves.

TONIGHT The Avalanche completes its two-game, back-to-back set tonight in Vancouver against the Canucks. Technically this is the conclusion of a three-game road trip for the Avs, who played in Minnesota on Saturday before heading home for a few days. Tonight ends a stretch that saw the Avs play nine-of-12 away from home. The Avs will continue a stretch that has them playing 11-of-15 and 14-of-20 away from home from Oct. 9-Nov. 23. Colorado's road-heavy early schedule has them playing 11 of their first 17, 14 of their first 22 and 19 of their first 30 on the road. Last night and tonight are Colorado's only two games in a span of 10 days from Oct. 28-Nov. 6. The Avs just went four days since their last game and will have another four days between games before hosting Nashville on Wednesday.

FIRST THINGS FIRST Vladislav Kamenev and Sheldon Dries each scored their first career NHL goal last night in Calgary, becoming the first Colorado Avalanche teammates to score their first career NHL goal in the same game. It was the sixth time in franchise history that two players scored their first goal in the same game, last accomplished by Nordiques rookies Peter Forsberg and Adam Deadmarsh on January 27, 1995 at Buffalo. Kamenev’s tally came shorthanded, the first Avs player to notch his first career goal while shorthanded since Greg Mauldin on Nov. 12, 2010 at Columbus

SEEING STARS Mikko Rantanen was named the NHL's First Star of the Month for October. He paced the NHL with 21 points and 16 assists in 12 games, tying Joe Sakic's Avalanche record for the month of October in both categories. Rantanen's 16 helpers were the most in a single month by a Colorado player since 2002-03, when Peter Forsberg had three such months. The Nousiainen, Finland, native collected points in each of his first nine games, tying the Avalanche record for the longest point streak to start a campaign. He and Gabriel Landeskog tied for the league lead with a +14 rating, an Avalanche record for the month of October. It was the best plus/minus by a Colorado player in any month since Rob Blake was +14 in March 2006. Rantanen was the first Avalanche player to lead the NHL in scoring through the end of October since Sakic in 1996-97.
