Edmund has achieved a new career-high ranking nine times this season, including when he rose to No. 43 on Monday. The #NextGen star has enjoyed a breakthrough year after ending 2015 at No. 102. Edmund reached his first three quarter-finals at Doha, London/Queen’s Club and Shanghai, also beating Richard Gasquet and John Isner en route to the fourth round at the US Open. While Edmund meets Illya Marchenko Tuesday on Court 1, No. 6 seed Joao Sousa and No. 7 seed Nicolas Mahut play first-round matches on Centre Court. Sousa faces qualifier Marius Copil and Mahut takes on Diego Schwartzman. Both Mahut and Schwartzman won ATP World Tour singles titles earlier this season -- Mahut on the grass courts of ’s-Hertogenbosch and Schwartzman on the clay courts of Istanbul. Wild card Tommy Robredo caps the singles action against Florian Mayer. The 484th-ranked Robredo is playing his second ATP World Tour event since undergoing right elbow surgery in April. Mayer was in Robredo’s shoes earlier this season, rebuilding his ranking following an adductor tear by winning the ATP World Tour 500 title at Halle. Yesterday’s media notes incorrectly stated that David Goffin would rise to No. 9 in the Emirates ATP Race to London by winning the European Open championship. Goffin must reach at least the semi-finals this week to add points to his race total. He would trail No. 9 Tomas Berdych by 30 race points if he captures the title on Sunday.
