A significant percentage of MSW originates from household activities. In this study we calculate the costs of setting up and running a zero-waste mortar-producing (ZWMP) process utilizing MSW in Northern Greece. The process is based on a thermal co-processing of properly dried and processed MSW with raw materials (limestone, clay materials, silicates and iron oxides) needed for the production of clinker and consequently of mortar in accordance with the Greek Patent 1003333, which has been proven to be an environmentally friendly process. According to our estimations, the amount of MSW generated in Central Macedonia, Western Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace regions, which is conservatively estimated at 1,270,000 t/y for the year 2020 if recycling schemes in Greece are not greatly ameliorated, may sustain six ZWMP plants while offering considerable environmental benefits. This work can be applied to many cities and areas, especially when their population generates MSW at the level of 200,000 t/y, hence requiring one ZWMP plant for processing. -

Music and Traditions of Thrace (Greece): a Trans-Cultural Teaching Tool 1
MUSIC AND TRADITIONS OF THRACE (GREECE): A TRANS-CULTURAL TEACHING TOOL 1 Kalliopi Stiga 2 Evangelia Kopsalidou 3 Abstract: The geopolitical location as well as the historical itinerary of Greece into time turned the country into a meeting place of the European, the Northern African and the Middle-Eastern cultures. Fables, beliefs and religious ceremonies, linguistic elements, traditional dances and music of different regions of Hellenic space testify this cultural convergence. One of these regions is Thrace. The aim of this paper is firstly, to deal with the music and the dances of Thrace and to highlight through them both the Balkan and the middle-eastern influence. Secondly, through a listing of music lessons that we have realized over the last years, in schools and universities of modern Thrace, we are going to prove if music is or not a useful communication tool – an international language – for pupils and students in Thrace. Finally, we will study the influence of these different “traditions” on pupils and students’ behavior. Fábulas, crenças e cerimónias religiosas, elementos linguísticos, danças tradicionais e a música das diferentes regiões do espaço helénico são testemunho desta convergência cultural. Uma destas regiões é a Trácia. O objectivo deste artigo é, em primeiro lugar, tratar da música e das danças da Trácia e destacar através delas as influências tanto dos Balcãs como do Médio Oriente. -

CONFERENCE ON JEWISH MATERIAL CLAIMS AGAINST GERMANY The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) is pleased to participate in the International Research Portal for Records Related to Nazi-Era Cultural Property. Founded in 1951 by 23 major international Jewish organizations, the Claims Conference is the principal negotiator for compensation and restitution for survivors of the Holocaust and heirs of victims. The partner of the State of Israel in founding Yad Vashem, the Claims Conference is the principal supporter of Holocaust-related archives and archival projects generally in the United States and many other countries, and it strives to encourage cooperation among archival institutions in the interests of providing both a measure of justice to victims and their heirs and of furthering Holocaust research, education and documentation. The Claims Conference and the World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO) conduct a comprehensive program toward the restitution of Jewish-owned art and cultural property lost and plundered during the Holocaust (see http://www.claimscon.org/art). Regarding archival provenance research, this program aims to reconstruct the historical-archival record so as to: 1. Develop listings of items plundered by the Nazis and their allies 2. Assemble listings of cultural property known to have been restituted; and thereby 3. Produce net listings of outstanding items of cultural property that have yet to be returned. The projects under this initiative form a major part of the records and information being offered through the International Research Portal by a number of participating countries and institutions. In particular, the Claims Conference has made available the following set of interlocking projects regarding the scattered records of the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (ERR), the largest of the Nazi agencies engaged in the plunder of art, libraries, archives, and Judaica: 1. -

The Commission of Looted Art Europe, who represented the claimant, and the British Museum, jointly sought guidance from the Spoliation Advisory Panel. The British Museum was advised by the Attorney-General as to whether the British Museum Act allows the restitution of an art object in order to meet a moral obligation. The Attorney-General deferred the issue to the High Court, which held that restitution was not possible without an act of the Parliament. Eventually, the British Museum’s authorities followed the recommendation of the Spoliation Advisory Panel and compensated the family with an ex gratia payment. I. Chronology; II. THE AMERICAN SCHOOL OF CLASSICAL STUDIES AT ATHENS Annual Reports 2008–2009 through 2009–2010 VISION The American School of Classical Studies at Athens strives to maintain and enhance its position as the preeminent center for the study of the Greek world from antiquity to the present day. MISSION The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) advances knowledge of Greece in all periods, as well as other areas of the classical world, by training young scholars, sponsoring and promoting archaeological fieldwork, providing resources for scholarly work, and disseminating research. The ASCSA is also charged by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism with primary responsibility for all American archaeological research, and seeks to support the investigation, preservation, and presentation of Greece’s cultural heritage. PHILOSOPHY The study of Greece from antiquity to the present day is critical for understanding the civilizations, history and culture of the Mediterranean, Europe, and Western Asia. The ASCSA supports a multidisciplinary approach to Hellenic studies, encompassing the fields of archaeology, anthropology, the archaeological sciences, topography, architecture, epigraphy, numismatics, history, art, language, literature, philosophy, religion, and cultural studies. As an institution in Greece sponsored by a consortium of institutions of higher education in North America, the ASCSA makes its resources available to qualified scholars, promotes the highest standards of research and archaeological fieldwork, and shares the results of its work.
