The incidence of dengue has increased 30-fold over the last 50 years. Up to 50-100 million infections are now estimated to occur annually in over 100 endemic countries, putting almost half of the world’s population at risk. Dengue is an acute febrile illness caused by Flavivirus, which exists in four different serotypes, namely, DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. Its transmission is effected through female Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes (vectors). This mosquito-borne disease not only causes high levels of morbidity and mortality, but also has a great economic impact, including loss in commercial and labour output, particularly, in tropical and subtropical countries. However, no part of the world is free from these diseases. In 2011, the WHO classification guidelines for dengue were revised and dengue was divided into DF, DHF without shock or with shock (DSS), and expanded dengue syndrome. According to its severity, DHF is divided in to four grades: DHF grade I, DHF grade II – DHF, DHF grade III, and DHF grade IV – DSS.

  • Aesthetics As Resistance: Rasa, Dhvani, and Empire in Tamil “Protest” Theater
AESTHETICS AS RESISTANCE: RASA, DHVANI, AND EMPIRE IN TAMIL “PROTEST” THEATER BY DHEEPA SUNDARAM DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Palencia-Roth, Chair Professor Rajeshwari Pandharipande, Director of Research Professor Indira Viswanathan Peterson, Mount Holyoke College Associate Professor James Hansen Abstract Aesthetics as Resistance: Rasa, Dhvani, and Empire in Modern Tamil “Protest” Theater addresses questions concerning the role of aesthetics in the development, production, and impact of Tamil “Protest” Theater (1900-1930) on the success of the Indian anticolonial movement in the colonial Tamil state. In addition, I explore the possibility for a Modern Tamil aesthetic paradigm that arises from these syncretic plays, which borrow from both external and indigenous narrative and dramaturgical traditions. I begin with the following question, “Can aesthetic “relishing” (rasasvāda) be transformed into patriotic sentiment and fuel anticolonial resistance?” Utilizing Theodore Baskaran’s The Message Bearers, which examines the development and production of anticolonial media in the colonial Tamil state as point of departure, my research interrogates Tamil “popular” or “company” drama as a successful vehicle for evoking anticolonial sentiment. In this context, I posit the concept of “rasa- consciousness” as the audience’s metanarrative lens that transforms emotive cues and signposts in the dramatic work into sentiment through a process of aesthetic "remembering.” This lens is constituted through a complex interaction between culture, empire, and modernity that governs the spectator’s memorializing process. The culturally-determined aesthetic “lens” of Tamil spectator necessitates a culture-specific messaging system by anticolonial playwrights that links the dramatic outcome with feelings of nationalism and patriotism.

  • Amrita Birth Centenary - 1995
AMRITA BIRTH CENTENARY - 1995 *************************************************** Amrita A Sketch by the Mother ***************************************************** Amrita with the Mother ***************************************************** Publisher's Note This book commemorates the life and work of K. Amrita, one of the earliest disciples of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. Originally named Aravamudachari, Amrita was born in 1895 into a Brahmin family in a village near Pondicherry in South India. As a boy in his teens he heard the name of Sri Aurobindo as one of the leaders of the freedom struggle going on in the country. When he learned in 1910 that Sri Aurobindo had come to live in Pondicherry, his joy knew no bounds. Three years later he realised his long-cherished wish to meet Sri Aurobindo. It was the beginning of a life-long association with the Master. After completing his studies in 1919, Amrita joined Sri Aurobindo and remained with him for the rest of his life. He passed away in 1969, after fifty years of total dedication to the service of the Master and the Mother. Part One of this book contains Amrita's own writings, including "Old Long Since" in which he tells the story of his early experiences with Sri Aurobindo. Part Two contains the writings of others who knew Amrita. These recollections have been gathered on the occasion of his birth centenary—19 September 1995. EXTRACT FROM THE MOTHER'S TALK 17 May 1969 ... for Amrita [who left his body on 31 January, following a heart attack], it was something else again. Amrita used to come in spite of his illness, he came to see me every day; he came up in the morning and sat there, and he came up once again in the evening (you saw what labour it was for him to climb stairs).

  • Study on Status of Children Between 15 and 18 Years in Puducherry and Karaikal

But there are contradictions in defining the age of children among these legislations. These contradictions not only lead to confusion in enforcement, but also exclude millions of children in the age group of 15 to 18 years from enjoying their legitimate right to survival, development, protection and participation. India ratified United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in 1992; UNCRC says, `a child means every human being below the age of eighteen years’. But even after 20 years of UNCRC in our country, we were not able to uniformly define `who is a child’, let alone ensuring all the rights enshrined in the Convention. Hence the idea to study the status of children who are neglected by most of the child welfare legislations came up during the discussion between HOPE Team and CRY (Child Rights and You) Team. This study was started in April 2012 and concluded in May 2013.

Flood of Memories:Narratives of Flood and Loss in Tamil South India Abstract Legendary deluges such as those said to have over-swept the Tamil lands or the flood waters that appear in popular religious and folk tales have long been a part of Tamil folk experience, and they serve as the backdrop against which contemporary flood is experienced. In this light, this dissertation explores the development and of disaster management policies in the Union Territory of Pondicherry from their origins in colonial-era policies to the significant e-orientationr that followed the 2004 Asian tsunami. Conclusions are based on 14 months of ethnographic research in coastal fisher communities and government relief agencies in the Union Territory. Historical data collected from archives and interviews with territorial officials and NGO workers complement insights gleaned from extensive participant-observation and field collection among deep-sea fisher populations in the former rF ench territories of the Coromandel Coast.
