This walk: • is 4.8-6.5 kilometres (3-4 miles) long • takes about 2.5-3.5 hours • has no steep hills and is easy walking • is unsuitable for a push chair • has no stiles on the shorter route and two kissing gates on the longer route • can be slippery when wet • uses OS map 197 • has a café at the start and a pub and café with toilets half way round When walking always follow the countryside code. www.countrysideaccess.gov.uk A short background to Pulborough and its history: The landscape features that have dominated the history and development of the Pulborough area are the river and floodplain, the greensand ridge that runs east-west through Pulborough village and the fertile area to the north of the greensand ridge. From left: The Old Rectory; Cattle in brooks; Lower Street This has generated the development of Pulborough Village as the heart of the area, the hamlets of Nutbourne, Mare Hill and Codmore Hill around the greensand ridge and isolated agricultural buildings to the north of the greensand ridge. The Pulborough area closer to the river Arun has been inhabited since very early times due to the river providing fish and a waterway for trade and improving the fertility of the flood plain to the south. Pulborough is a “linear village”, that is a long straggle of houses under the greensand ridge that were served by wells that drained out of the greensand at this level.

    Appendix 1: Site Assessment Criteria 392 Horsham District Council Local Plan Review Housing and Employment Site Assessment Criteria 2019 1.0 Introduction 1.1 Horsham District Council is in the process of reviewing the Horsham District Planning Framework (HDPF), which was adopted in 2015. The review of this plan will consider the level and location of future housing and employment development in the period to 2036. 1.2 In 2018, Horsham District Council undertook a call for sites to enable the Strategic Housing and Employment Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA) data to be reviewed and updated. This update was published in January 2019. Some 500 sites have been put forward to the Council for consideration for a range of different types of development, although the vast majority (around 450) have indicated that the site should be considered for residential development, either in whole or in part. 1.3 As part of preparation of the Local Plan Review, further consideration of all sites included in the latest SHELAA is required to help determine the selection of preferred sites for new housing and employment development, in order that we can meet our development needs up to 2036. The assessment of sites needs to be undertaken against a consistent set of planning criteria. A set of criteria has therefore been devised against which potential sites will be assessed and are set out in more detail in this paper. 2.0 Draft Site Assessment Criteria Consultation 2.1 The draft Site Assessment Criteria were subject to targeted consultation between 2 and the 29 April 2019.

The area is well connected, located mid-way between London and the south coast, and has good road and rail connections to both these areas. The district also has excellent international links, with Gatwick Airport directly adjoining the District boundary to the north east. The population is generally highly skilled, with 47.7% of residents educated to degree level or higher. Horsham boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. Although a high number of people in the district are employed locally, there are large numbers who commute outside the District to roles where salaries are generally higher. 1.2 The towns and villages in Horsham District are generally historic in nature, with buildings and structures in the district dating back to Norman times and creating attractive and characterful urban environments, many of which are listed buildings or are designated as a Conservation Area. Most settlements offer a number of services and facilities for those who live there including high quality local schools, shops, sports facilities and open spaces, together with some local employment.

The main market town of Horsham is located in the north east of the District. Much of the District’s countryside is very attractive and it is recognised that this is an important factor in encouraging people to live and work in the district. 1.2 In recent years, the need for housing development has placed considerable pressure for development on greenfield land around villages and towns in Horsham District. The find was made within an area of intensive Romano-British activity and, although the possibility of recent importation cannot be completely discounted, the likelihood is that it represents a genuine Roman portrait of the mid-3rd century AD, defaced and disposed of in antiquity.
