2002 Arizona Women’s Soccer 17 Coaching Staff

In her third season as the head coach of the University of Arizona women’s soccer team, Cathy Klein continues her quest to transform the Wildcat program into a nationally prominent powerhouse. The steps may seem slow, but the improve- ments have been obvious. Over the six seasons prior to Klein’s arrival, the Wildcat program earned a combined total of three Pac-10 victories. Last year alone, Klein guided the Cats to a 2-7-0 conference mark, the most conference wins for a UA team in four seasons. The 2001 team also set or tied 23 school records, including Cathy most goals in a season (30), most assists in a season (20), most total points (80) and most corner kicks (87). During her brief time at Arizona, Klein has already produced three Klein honorable mention All-Pac-10 selections, two second team Academic All- Pac-10 honorees and five honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 choices. Fourteen Wildcat soccer players earned Mary Roby Academic Achievement Head Awards during the 2001-02 school year, bringing Klein’s total up to 28 Mary Roby Award winners in her two seasons at the UA. Coach In January of 2000, Cathy Klein, a former All-American player and the head coach at Iowa State for five years, was named the second head women’s Third Year soccer coach at the University of Arizona. In her first year, Klein began her quest to turn the Arizona soccer program around, finishing the 2000 season with a 3-15-2 mark which belies the actual SUNY- progress that was made during the year. With a brutal schedule, the team Cortland, played an unprecedented six nationally ranked teams, all in the final seven matches of the year. The squad set or 1987 tied 30 school records, and half of the season’s 20 contests were decided by a margin of only one goal or less. Klein, 38, led Iowa State to three postseason conference tournament appearances during her tenure there and was Big 12 Conference Co-Coach of the Year in 1997, when ISU posted a 12-9 record. Her 1999 team went 13-8, Arizona reached No. 21 in the national rankings, posted a seven-game winning streak and recorded victories over nationally Record: prominent Minnesota, Vanderbilt and Texas. Klein was named the first coach at Iowa State in 1995 and compiled a record of 43-37-1 in four regulation 8-27-3 seasons after the team played an exhibition year. She recruited both the 1998 and 1999 Big 12 Conference Rookies 2 years of the Year, and her 1998 team earned its best-ever Big 12 record and participated in a second consecutive Big 12 Tournament. Including a 1994 season at Creighton, she has a Division I record of 57-41-1. Klein led Creighton to a 14-4 mark Division I and reached a No. 17 national ranking during the 1994 season and was a perfect 8-0 at home including a victory Career over Big Ten champion Wisconsin. Record: Prior to the Creighton job, Klein spent three years as the head coach at Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., where she posted a 16-37-2 mark. In her third year as an assistant coach for the Wildcats, Melissa Estrada followed head coach Cathy Klein from Iowa State and has been playing a key role in the efforts to revive the Arizona soccer program. Estrada works with second-year assistant coach Casey Mann in the UA’s recruiting efforts, player academics and on-field instruction. Estrada was part of Klein’s staff for four years at Iowa State and was critical in the development of that program. She organized the ISU soccer program’s day-to-day operations, was the individual trainer for all field players and coordinated the Cyclones’ community service program. Prior to Iowa State, Estrada posted a stellar collegiate career. The San Diego, Calif., native was a four-year starter at Creighton, finishing third on the Melissa all-time scoring list with 15 goals and 10 assists (40 points). Estrada During her senior season, Estrada was a starting midfielder for Cathy Klein’s team that earned a 14-4-0 mark. She earned her degree in Spanish from Assistant Creighton in 1995. As a prep, Estrada was named the California Interscholastic Federation Player of the Year in 1990 while Coach playing for San Dieguito High School. She was a two-time first-team All-Palomar League choice and a first-team All- Third Year CIF selection. The two-time high school MVP was twice a member of the California South State Team. Following her prep Creighton, career, she was honored as the San Dieguito Surf Soccer Club Player of the 80s. 1995

Casey Mann begins his second season as an assistant coach at Arizona, where he is primarily responsible for instruction of the Wildcat goalkeepers. Mann came to the UA last year after spending 2000-01 as a West Des Moines Soccer Club head coach and as the goalkeeper coach and a head girls coach for the Iowa Soccer Association Olympic Development Program. Prior to that, Mann was an assistant coach and the goalkeeper coach for the Arizona State women’s soccer program for the 1999-2000 school year. During that season, the Sun Devils posted a 13-6-0 overall record and went 5-4 in Pac-10 play, finishing fifth. That was the most successful season to date in that program’s young history. Mann’s other coaching experience includes being the women’s Casey assistant coach and the men’s goalkeeper coach at Grand View College, in Des Moines, Iowa. He also tutored the goalkeeping staff for the Iowa Mann United Soccer Club in Des Moines. During his professional playing career as a goalkeeper for the Des Assistant Moines Menace, Mann propelled his team to two National Final Fours and two top-ten finishes in the USL Premier Coach Development League. Second Year As a collegiate goalkeeper at Grand View, Mann earned NAIA All-America, All-Midwest Region and All-Midwest Classic Conference honors.
