Tree hyrax shelters and trees with cavities were located. Activities of hyraxes were observed in the morning, midday and afternoon hours. -

Even so, the medium and large mammal fauna remains poorly known and to date no systematic mammal surveys have been published from any of Mozambique’s mountains. We present results of a medium and large mammal survey of Serra Jeci’s Mt Chitagal, Mt Sanga and the Njesi Plateau in Niassa, northern Mozambique; the first mammal diversity data collected from these isolated mountains. We recorded 27 mammal species, of which six represent range expansions; Sykes’s monkey (Cercophitecus mitis), Mozambique dwarf galago (Paragalago granti), Smith’s red rock hare (Pronolagus rupestris), lesser cane rat (Thryonomys gregorianus), rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) and African buffalo (Syncerus caffer). We also reviewed and collated records of medium and large mammals from previously published fieldwork on northern Mozambique’s mountains, amounting to a total of 34 large mammal species from seven montane areas, highlighting the lack of mammalian knowledge in Mozambique’s Afromontane habitats. -

Because their role as apex predators in ecosystems is considered vital for ecosystem health, conservation efforts have been implemented throughout their distribution. In many cases, we do not know enough about their basic food and habitat requirements, which is requisite if we are going to be able to protect them. The purpose of this study was to describe the habits and biology of nesting martial eagles by looking at the chick’s diets and the roles of male and female eagles in provision and presentation (dismemberment) of prey to the chicks. Data were collected non-obtrusively by fitting five nests in the Maasai Mara and one in the Rift Valley region of Kenya with cameras that were both motion-triggered and programmed to take images every five minutes. Based on analysis of 214,000 image frames, the diet of nesting martial eagles and their chicks was found to be comprised of 23 different species within four broad prey categories (gamebirds, domestic poultry, large ungulates and small ungulates), of which gamebirds were the most important. There were sex-based differences in parental feeding, with females selecting for larger and heavier prey items than males. -

This tour took full advantage of this wealth as we covered an amazing transect from the shores of Lake Victoria east through the woodlands and plains of the Serengeti to immense Ngorongoro Crater, lush Lake Manyara, and semiarid Tarangire National Park. Every habitat visited had its specialties, and every day brought wonderful sightings. Few destinations have improved as the decades have gone by, but Tanzania certainly has. The facilities were good, with each lodge quite different and unique. Food was abundant and tasty, the people friendly, and, most important, the parks and reserves are in great shape. Our Tanzanian driver-guides Geitan Ndunguru and Roger Mwengi were delightful to be with, highly skilled, full of information, and always patient, cheerful, and ready for us. This is a country with a lot going for it! Our visit was timed for a season of change, as the prolonged dry season gives way to the first showers of the oncoming rains. -

1 Report on a Trip to Southern Tanzania (with a focus on Mammals) 5 – 18 June 2018 Keith Millar [email protected] 2 In June I travelled with my wife, Lesley, around Tanzania’s southern safari circuit. Our second time in southern Tanzania, the aim of this trip was to visit Ruaha, Udzungwa Mountains and Mikumi National Parks (NPs) and, hopefully, to catch up on some mammals that I had yet to see in Africa. Our international flights were booked through Trailfinders https://www.trailfinders.com/ (Emirates via Dubai to Dar es Salaam, a cheaper option than with Kenyan Airlines via Nairobi). We’d chosen to use Wild Things Safaris Ltd https://wildthingsafaris.com/ as our ground agents. Based on our experience, I would recommend them. They were prompt at replying to questions; ground arrangements were all handled efficiently and they were flexible, e.g. I made one key accommodation change days before we left the UK and their response was immediate (having made the change and without levying additional charges). They also understood that I wanted to see specific mammals and provided a guide/ driver, Salim, who was knowledgeable, professional (and a nice guy). It’s thanks to him that I was able, finally, to catch up with a couple of key species. A couple of points on travel: there are now 50mph speed restrictions along designated sections on many of Tanzania’s highways. The speed limit is strictly enforced. Even if adhering to designated limits, expect to be pulled over at one of the many police checkpoints and for the driver to have to present documentation. -

The western tree hyrax (Dendrohyrax dorsalis), widely distributed in tropical rainforest ecosystem and its distinct call behaviour among forest nocturnal animal in West Africa, would have been one of the least researched mammals in Nigeria. This study investigates the influence of land use pattern on density and calling behaviour of the species. Line transects surveys was employed in four different land use types Core forest, Buffer forest, Farm fallow and Plantation to evaluate the distribution and density of D. dorsalis. The transect survey show that the hyraxes densities varies across the four different land use for a total of 64km of transects walked 10.45ha-1 close-canopy, 8.13ha-1 secondary forest, 3.43ha-1 and zero in the plantation forest. Mean density of calling individuals for the four different land use type varies from 15.6ha-1 in a core zone, 12.1ha-1 in a buffer zone, 5.1ha-1 in a farm fallow and 0.00ha-1 in a plantation. -

Here, I analyze the dental microwear of modern hyraxes to assess dietary and ecological relationships among the four extant species of Procaviidae: Heterohyrax brucei, Procavia capensis, Dendrohyrax arboreus, and Dendrohyrax dorsalis.
