Automotive at 11714 St. Charles Rock Road, hosted an open house on the J morning of Saturday, May 6. JAGSL members had a special invitation to attend and other car clubs were also invited. It’s Alive! started out in Waterloo, Illinois in 2013. The classic car restoration and sales business just recently moved to a new, 30,000 square foot facility one mile west of the airport at the intersection of I-70 and the St. Charles Rock Road. Everyone who attended was welcome to free donuts and T-shirts. Jeff (who is also a recently minted member of JAGSL and Growl advertiser) thanks everyone who attended. In a recent email, Jeff said, “My wife, staff, Ellie (my dog) and I truly appreciate all the effort you took to organize the event yesterday at our facility. We all had a lot of fun and felt it was a great success (measured by the amount of fun).” We wish Jeff the best in his new location! —ALLAN ELLIS Pictures: Allan Ellis, Jeff Homsher, & John Testrake The Jaguar’s Growl June 2017 5 Join us for a trip to the Crown Valley Tiger Sanctuary, in St. Genevieve, MO. The sanctuary is a rescue facility for beautiful big cats, where they can live as naturally as possible in a safe and healthy environment. We’ll meet in the parking lot of the St. Louis Bread Company at Tesson Ferry (Rt. 21) & Kennerly Road (behind the Walgreen’s on the corner), just South of Hyw 270. We will leave this location at 9:30am, backtrack to Hyw 270 and then go South on Hyw 55 and exit at Hyw 32. You will turn right on Hyw 32 West and immediately turn left on Hyw B. From there it is approximately eight miles to the sanctuary on your right. We will have an approximately one hour tour of the facility, scheduled to begin at 11:00am, when you will be able to get really close to the ani- mals, learning about them and watching them eat and play in their home. When we leave the sanctuary, you will turn to right and follow the signs to the Crown Valley Winery for wine tasting and you will have the option of taking a winery tour. The cost of the tiger tour and the wine tasting is $20.00 total per person and you can also choose to have lunch on your own at the winery if you wish. (There will be no event charge.) We must have the number of at- tendees for the sanctuary tour, so please e-mail a response to Thomas Loew at <[email protected]>. Newsletter published six times a year and special issues when needed. From the Editor Hi everyone, Those of you who were not there, are the one’s that missed out on a great time, making new acquaintances and lots of great buys. Yes, I’m speaking about the Pre War Swap Meet that takes place each March in Chickasha, OK. Like every year before, there was a great time had by all that attended. Lots and lots of vendors showing their goods and beautiful cars to be had for the right price. For myself, this year’s trip to the candy store began a good twenty four hours before the meet was to begin, simply to be there when the vendor’s started to arrive. Remember the old saying “The early bird get’s the worm”. In this case, it was true. My quest this year was to find a very special part that would enable me to complete my REO build that has now gone past the completion time allowed to the project. The plans for the carriage had been completed and put up on the website quite a while back and the actual build, for the most part had been done for almost a year now, except for the final steps of painting and reassembly. Thus, the reason for not having any colored pictures on the REO Plans Page of the HCR.com Website.

CLUB LOTUS ELAN SECTION The Elan Plus 2 Estate Conversions In the 2017 spring edition of Club Lotus News we looked at the well-known and much admired Shapecraft fastback Elans. We also looked at the estate conversion of the Elan by Hexagon in the spring 2015 edition and the Elan Fastbacks in the spring of 2018. Although Lotus never built a production estate version of the Plus 2, a number of cars were converted by various individuals or firms. We thought we should now take a look at those we know of. The Hickman Estate This is thought to be the closest rendering of the Hickman estate, a 3/8ths scale model Having written that Lotus never built a production estate, we do know that Ron Hickman, the genius behind both the Elan and +2, turned his attention to the possibility of an estate version. He even went as far as drawing some sketches and making a model of the styling he had in mind at the time. In fact, his ideas took the utility of the +2 further. He envisaged a fixed roof and C pillars allied to a removable boot lid, rear scuttle and rear screen. This allowed for both an estate and a sports pick-up version, as well as the coupe. Although Hickman first penned his ideas in 1961, it was not until late 1965 that he persuaded Colin Chapman that project M28 should be seriously considered. However, the idea was killed off by the Lotus board in January 1966, due to problems with achieving a decent front and rear weight distribution under all loads and the late running development of the 907 engine, which was envisaged as a suitable power plant for the concept.

Winning at Le Mans, victory in the World Sportscar Championship, the Zagatos and Royal patronage would be enough for any car manufacturer.
