FOREWORD. There is an old tale told in Ireland of a loveable and bright and handsome youth named Donn-bo, who was the best singer of *' songs of idleness," and the best teller of " King-stories" in the world. He could tell a tale of each King who reigned at Tara from the Tale of the Destruction of Dind Righ, when Cobthach Coel- breg was killed, down to the Kings who reigned in his own time. " One night before a battle, the warriors said : Make minstrelsy for us, O Donn-bo." But Donn-bo said: ** No word at all will come on my lips to-night; there- fore, for this night let the King-buffoon of Ireland amuse you. But to-morrow at this hour, in whatever place they and I shall be, I will make minstrelsy for the fighting-men." For the warriors had said that unless Donn-bo went with them on that hosting, not one of them would go. On the evening of the morrow Donn-b6 lay dead, his fair young body stretched across the body of the King of Erin, for he had died in defending his chief. But his head had rolled away and lay ;„mongst a wisp of growing rushes by the water-side. At the feasting of the army on that night, a warrior " said : Where is Donn-b6, that he may make minstrelsy for us, and tell us the King-stories of Erin?" A valiant champion of the men of Munster answered : FOREWORD. "I will go over the battlefield and find him." He en- quired among the living for Donn-bo, but he found him not, and then he searched hither and thither among the dead. At last he came where the body of the King of Erin lay, and a young, fair corpse beside it. In all the air about was a low, sweet sound of minstrelsy, and the faint whisper of poets and bards reciting tales and poems, and the wild clear note of the dord jiansa, like the echo of an echo, in the clump of rushes hard by; and above them all a voice, very faint and still, that sang a tune that was sweeter than all the tunes of the whole world. The voice that sang was the voice of the head of Donn-b6. The warrior stooped to pick up the head. ** Do not touch me," said the head, " for we are com- manded by the King of the Plains of Heaven to make music to-night for our lord, the King of Erin, the shining one who lies dead beside us; and though all of us are lying dead, no faintness or feebleness shall pre- vent us from obeying that command. Disturb me not." ** The hosts of Leinster are asking for thee to make minstrelsy for them," said the messenger. *' When my minstrelsy here is done, I will go with you," said the head, *' but only if Christ, the Son of God, in whose presence I now am, go with me, and if you take me to my body again." "That shall be done, indeed," said the messenger, and he carried away the head. FOREWORD. When the messeng-er came again amongst the war- riors, they stopped their feasting and g-athered round him. " Hast thou brought anything from the battle- field?" they cried. "I have brought the head of Donn-b6," said the man. "Set it up upon a pillar, that we may see and hear it," cried they all; and they said, **It is no luck for thee to be like that, Donn- b6, and thou the most beautiful minstrel and the best in Erin. Make music for the love of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Amuse the Leinstermen to-night, as thou didst amuse thy lord awhile ago." Then Donn-b6 turned his face to the wall, that the darkness might be around him, and he raised his melody in the quiet night; and the sound of that minstrelsy was so piteous and sad, that all the host sat weeping at the sound of it. Then was his head taken to his body, and the neck joined itself to the shoulders again, and Donn-bo was satisfied. The old King-stories that Donn-bo loved have been forgotten by Erin's children. Even the few of them to v/hom the tales of Finn and of Cuchulain are not quite unknown, know little of the old romances of Cormac mac Airt, or of Niall of the Nine Hostages, or of Conn of the Hundred Fights; nor have they any re- membrance how the House of Da Derga was destroyed, nor why Tara fell, nor yet why men still say of an open-handed man "He is like Guaire the Hospitable." Yet from the tale of Dind Righ which Donn-bo knew, down to the times of the Northmen in Ireland, there is FOREWORD. no great King of Erin but has his own romance, and some fine tale told of his doings. These stories I havo told in this little book, and in the one that is to follow; not in a critical way for the learned or for wise people, but simply, as the old story-tellers told them at the kingly feasts, for the pleasure of the young folk of Ire- land. It was for some young people of the Gaelic League I wrote these chapters, and it seemed to me that perhaps other Irish men or women and chil- dren might like to know them too. For if on the Plains of Heaven an Irish king wearied for the stories of his ancestors, why should not the children of Erin care to hear them in the Valleys of Earth? So we will set Donn-bo's head on the pillar again, and bid him tell us tales.

    Island Pamphlets (contents) The original back-cover synopses for pamphlets 1–96 The Island Pamphlet series was initiated in 1993 for the purpose of stimulating debate on a variety of issues pertinent to Northern Irish society. Some of the first titles sought to explore aspects of Ulster’s shared history and culture. However, increasing interest in the pamphlets soon engendered requests for them to be tied in with community-based ‘Think Tanks’ – small-group discussions which focused on the different needs encountered at a grassroots level. These Think Tank pamphlets, which were edited accounts of these discussions, endeavoured to bring to a wider audience the diversity of opinion which existed within grassroots communities in Northern Ireland – Unionist and Nationalist – but which was sparsely reflected by the mainstream media. The Think Tanks embraced all sides of Northern Ireland’s communal divide, as well as different groupings within communities: young people, senior citizens, community activists, ex-prisoners, victims.... Other pamphlets provided a record of important community conferences, debates or cross-border exchanges. In an attempt to accommodate the increasing number of requests to set up Think Tanks focusing on different themes, European Peace & Reconciliation funding was successfully sought, and in late 1998, commencing with pamphlet No. 19, Island Pamphlets was incorporated into the Farset Community Think Tanks Project. The pamphlet series developed three basic aims: (i) to provide a vehicle for the small-group discussions; (ii) to extend the debate even further by distributing 2000 copies of each title around the community network; and (iii) to facilitate, where possible, an ongoing cross-community dialogue.

CHAPTER 04 - Clodagh Downey 7/20/15 1:11 PM Page 1 CHAPTER 4 Literature and learning in early medieval Meath CLODAGH DOWNEY The medieval literature of Ireland stands out among the vernacular literatures of western Europe for its volume, its diversity and its antiquity, and within this treasury of cultural riches, Meath holds a prominence greatly disproportionate to its geographical extent, however that extent is reckoned. Indeed, the first decision confronting anyone who wishes to consider this subject is to define its geographical limits: the modern county of Meath is quite a different entity to the medieval kingdom of Mide from which it gets its name and which itself designated different areas at different times. It would be quite defensible to include in a survey of medieval literature those areas which are now under the administration of other modern counties, but which may have been part of the medieval kingdom at the time that that literature was produced.

July, 2004 © David N. Wilson 1 Abstract David Noel Wilson, Honour and Early Irish Society: a Study of the Táin Bó Cúalnge. This is a study of an early Irish heroic tale, the Táin Bó Cúailnge (The Cattle Raid of the Cooley). It examines the role and function of honour, both within the tale and within the society that produced the text. Its demonstrates how the pursuit of honour has influenced both the theme and structure of the Táin . Questions about honour and about the resolution of conflicting obligations form the subject matter of many of the heroic tales. The rewards and punishments of honour and shame are the primary mechanism of social control in societies without organised instruments of social coercion, such as a police force: these societies can be defined as being ‘honour-based’. Early Ireland was an honour- based society. This study proposes that, in honour-based societies, to act honourably was to act with ‘appropriate and balanced reciprocity’. Applying this understanding to the analysis of the Táin suggests a new approach to the reading the tale. This approach explains how the seemingly repetitive accounts of Cú Chulainn in single combat, which some scholars have found wearisome, serve to maximise his honour as a warrior in the eyes of the audience of the tale.

Publicado na véspera da 2ª Guerra, o livro caiu no esquecimento até ser re-editado em 1960. A partir dessa data, At Swim-Two-Birds foi adquirindo uma reputação cult entre leitores e despertando o interesse crítico. Ao lançar mão do conceito mise en abyme de André Gide, o presente estudo procura mapear os textos dos quais At Swim-Two-Birds se apropria para refletí-los de forma distorcida dentro de sua própria narrativa. Estes textos vão desde narrativas míticas e históricas, passam pela poesia medieval e vão até os meados do século XX. From it we learn that at Hallowtide—at the close, that is, of the autumn and beginning of the winter season — the ancient Irish worship-ped the image or symbol of a god with human sacrifice. Now the Irish annals have somewhat to say about the cult practised at Mag Slecht. In the Annals of the Four Masters we read, A.M. 3656 (i.e. ac-cording to the chronology of the Four Masters, 1538 years before the birth of Christ), as follows con-cerning Tighernmas, king of Ireland at the time : ‘ It was by Tighearnmas also that gold was first smelted in Ireland....It was by him that goblets and brooches were first covered with gold and silver in Ireland.

    1 FIONN IN HELL An anonymous early sixteenth-century poem in Scots describes Fionn mac Cumhaill as having ‘dang þe devill and gart him ʒowle’ (‘struck the Devil and made him yowl’) (Fisher 1999: 36). The poem is known as ‘The Crying of Ane Play.’ Scots literature of the late medieval and early modern period often shows a garbled knowledge of Highland culture; commonly portraying Gaels and their language and traditions negatively. Martin MacGregor notes that Lowland satire of Highlanders can, ‘presuppose some degree of understanding of the language, and of attendant cultural and social practices’ (MacGregor 2007: 32). Indeed Fionn and his band of warriors, 1 collectively Na Fiantaichean or An Fhèinn0F in modern Scottish Gaelic, are mentioned a number of times in Lowland literature of the period (MacKillop 1986: 72-74). This article seeks to investigate the fate of Fionn’s soul in late medieval and early modern Gaelic literature, both Irish and Scottish. This is done only in part to consider if the yowling Devil and his encounter with Fionn from the ‘The Crying of Ane Play’ might represent something recognizable from contemporaneous Gaelic literature. Our yowling Devil acts here as something of a prompt for an investigation of Fionn’s potential salvation or damnation in a number of sixteenth-century, and earlier, Gaelic ballads. The monumental late twelfth- or early thirteenth-century (Dooley 2004) text Acallam na 2 Senórach (‘The Colloquy of the Ancients’) will also be considered here.1F Firstly, the Scots poem must be briefly investigated in order to determine its understanding of Gaelic conventions.

Our aim will be to make a historical and literary analysis of the text to understand that it can be read as a set of binomials, three types of binomials more exactly: history and mythology; religion and paganism; and prose and verse. The result of this analysis will prove the coexistence and, in some cases, also the conflict between these oppositions.
