Each month there will be a “Maniac poll”. This poll will be posted online. Please take a few moments to answer this poll. I will post the results in the next newsletter. This month’s question: Assuming that you have to wear a Maniac shirt/singlet, which is your favorite? Please vote online between now and April 4: http://www.marathonfreak.com/maniacpoll

Last month’s question: When traveling to a marathon, do you travel alone or in a group? It looks like most Maniacs travel with there significant other when traveling to a marathon (32%). But almost as many travel with a friend or two (24%). Other popular travel plans include travel to a distance alone and meeting friends at the destination (21%) and finally traveling alone (20%). 6 February 2011 Newsletter

This is a call out to ALL MANIACS, I want to hear your story!! I know many of you have a great story to tell. Many of you have great stories of incredible weight loss and many of you have changed lives since you started running. I know some of your stories, but I’m sure everyone would like to hear them too. Don’t be shy to tell the story, it will encourage us all and give us all a little motivation.

Here is what I want you to do, take a few minutes and write out your story, it can be on one main topic or point, or it can be a summary of how your life has changed! It can also be just words of encouragement or a thank you to the Maniacs as a whole. All I ask is that you keep your story to 500 words or less, basically what I want is a short and simple story of how your life is different then it was before running!

If you want to share a photo along with your story you can e-mail it to me ([email protected]).

I have set up a very simple form that will only take seconds to fill out. Click on the following link to share your story! http://marathonfreak.com/mm/mystory.htm Here are some possible topics for your short story: • How did you get into running? • What was your life like before running and how has it changed? • What inspired you to become a Maniac? • Have you lost a lot of weight because of running? • What groups or friends have inspired you the most? • What words of thanks would you like to say to the Maniacs? • How have you inspired others through your running?

Two Heroes I met a little boy with cancer a year ago. I told him I would run a marathon for him. Then he went to the intensive care unit. His dad called and made it sound like they didn't want visitors. He then called me back and said, "Bryndon heard you on the phone. He is wondering if you will come up and visit." When I got there his mom gave me an essay he wrote in his 4th grade class about his favorite Kansas City person. He picked me. Then through his breathing machine he started crying and said, "it was just a rough draft. I wasn't finished yet." That was when I turned maniac and I said I would run marathons until he is done with Chemotherapy. I get little man a t shirt and medal from every race I have run. Some Directors give me an extra, most I give him mine.

I started at 250 Pounds on 3 blood pressure medicines and couldn't even run half a . Bryndon is my hero too! In one year I went from couch potato to 7 marathons, 3 50k's, 50 Miler, and I have tried a 100 twice one time 75 , another 57 miles. I am trying to get Bryndon a belt buckle before he finishes chemo this fall.

Thank You I love telling the little man’s story.

I took him the shirt and medal from my 50 miler. He was laying on the couch. His mom said that since he got radiation all he wants to do is sleep he has been so nauseous and sick. When I got there he jumped up and started talking 100mph. He said my running name would be limping turtle when a turtle passed me on my 50 . The Mud Dauber's Story! By Kristin Malek (#3161)

My story is ongoing but I love to share it as it progresses! In 2002, I joined the Army at 17 with a love/hate relationship with running. My attitude was one of "I do it because I have to for my job.." and it gradually deteriorated from there. I ran as little as possible to deal with the stresses of an overseas deployment once the Iraq war began, but realized an attitude overhaul would be necessary to come to "love" it. I got out of the army in October 2008 right before I had my daughter. About 6 weeks after my daughter was born, I decided to step on the scale. 230 pounds! (And I'm only 5'5!) I spent a few more months in misery on various gym contraptions before I decided to volunteer for the Little Rock Marathon in 2009. After the race, I decided to Google the "Marathon Maniacs" (I had seen the singlets!) and realized I had a VERY long road ahead of me if I was ever going to be that crazy about running. Nonetheless, I ran my first 5K the next month in 33 minutes, and a few more that summer. I decided to start half marathon training, and then marathon training. The weight started melting away. By April of 2010, I had met my goal weight and had lost a total of 90 lbs. In August of 2010, I moved to WA and met some amazing running pals who helped me make my Maniac qualifier in November 2010. I've realized that while I might not be that fast, I am getting faster. While I may not be ready for a 100-miler, I can do some serious distances. I prefer mud over asphalt any day of the week! I believe this amazing community of crazies has made a serious impact on my attitude towards running and fitness in general. Remember when you wear the Maniac yellow, you have no idea who might take notice and decide to make a change in their own life for the better.

The Marathon Show (hosted by Maniac #1817, Joe Taricani) was first broadcast in June 2010. It’s a one of a kind show that spot lights the marathon and marathon runners. Maniacs have found a safe haven with this great show. A few times a week Joe broadcast the show live online, the shows are then made available to download from iTunes (via Podcast). Each week Joe features a marathoner, and often does shout outs to marathoners from all over. Another great part of this show is the “runners chat”, in these shows Joe gets three marathoners together and does a round table discussion about many great topics. So if you have already come across the show, please do. Check it out and tune in! http://www.themarathonshow.com

Former Fat Girl Goes Maniac By Rose Bak (#1992) Growing up I was always the "fat girl". My weight ballooned as I got older and by my 30s I weighed over 300 pounds. While at the doctor in 2007 for a routine check-up she said my blood pressure was getting high enough for meds. I thought, "This is it. I've been really healthy until now, but first it's blood pressure, then I'll be diabetic, I'm getting the fat diseases, I’ll be dead of a heart attack by 40". Resolving to finally do something, I joined Curves, a gym targeted towards women without exercise experience, and started to lose a couple pounds a month. Encouraged, I started making changes to my diet and the weight came off more quickly. Gradually I lost 125 pounds.

Soon I was walking too and a friend and I decided to walk the Race for the Roses Half Marathon in April 2008. One of the scariest moments of my life was going into the Convention Center before the race, seeing the huge crowd of fit-looking runners in their little outfits, stretching and talking. I stood there in my cotton clothes and cheap shoes, clutching a plastic water bottle (not knowing there’d be fluids on the course), feeling like an outsider, wondering what I’d gotten myself into and praying I wouldn’t get lost on the course. Completing Race for the Roses literally changed my life. It gave me a love for racing and a sense I could do anything, even something sporty, which I’d never done in my life. I set my sights higher and later that year walked the Portland Marathon. Walking Before turned into running and I continued to race. It was at the 2009 Newport Marathon that I first saw the Maniacs, festive in their yellow shirts and greeting each other on the out and back. I thought to myself, “How cool would it be a part of that club some day?” I figured it was a few years off though. Four months later I did the Portland Marathon again and the Greek Marathon in Athens. Then I realized that if I did the Seattle Marathon over Thanksgiving weekend I could qualify for Maniacs. Seattle was two days away but registration was still open, so clearly it was meant to be. I was so thrilled to realize that I'd become the kind of person who could just go do a marathon on a whim, so I did. Three marathons in 90 days. Maniac #1992 was born.

I've now completed 13 marathons and ultras (and attempted two other ultras) and this year will be doing my first 24- hour race and the TransRockies 6-day race. My life has completely changed due to racing...new body, new friends, new outlook on life, new way to burn off calories from peanut butter cups....I love it! I might be one of the slowest in the After race, I’ve even been DFL, but I can always finish. For a girl who spent most of her life on the couch, that’s pretty exciting! 8 February 2011 Newsletter

Fall of 2008 I decided to get back in shape (loose the weight I put on while my wife was pregnant - I was around 230 lbs). Joined a local gym and begin a three day a week strength conditioning program (LesMills BodyPump) and soon realized that I needed some cardio. Began to run on the treadmill once a week. Started running one to a week and gradually up to 6 miles a week.

Spring of 2009 I decided to check out a local 5K race. At that time I was running roughly 8 miles a week. I didn’t know what to expect for the 5K as I’ve never raced over 400 meters (I was a sprinter in high school and competed in the 100, 200, 400 and ). My sister-in-law warned me that once I did the 5K I would be hooked. Well, she was right. I ran a decent race (23.47) and I think what really got me hooked was that I saw my name in the paper the next morning (was listed in the top 15 of my age group). After seeing that I made a goal for myself to try and get into the top 5 of my age group at the next race. 2009 consisted of more 5Ks and learning race logistics/training programs. Fall of 2009 I ran into some friends from high school that live in the area and started to do group runs on the weekends. Obviously living in the Michigan, running tights are a crucial clothing component…thus one of our running mate’s wife nicknamed our group ‘MIT” (Men In Tights). At this time I was averaging 20 miles a week.

2010 was the year that being ‘hooked’ turned into being ‘nutso’ as family and friends would refer too. In February I signed up for the Chicago marathon. Oher MITers signed up for the Grand Rapids marathon which was 7 days after Chicago thus our training programs lined up. Besides the training, 2010 also brought a total of 23 races (5K, 10K, 15K, 25K and a half marathon). Needless to say if there was a race in the area, I ran it.

When October came, I was ready for Chitown! I’d been training to finish it around 3:50. I’ll cut to the chase...we all know Chicago was unbelievably HOT! Not only that but at mile 14 my 8:30 pace was incredibility hard to keep and I had to slow up. As the miles went by I started to get very sick (later that night I realized that I got the flu that afternoon). I was told twice by medics on the course that I should stop. I said HELL NO!!! All this training, I’m NOT quitting! I finished it! Scared my family though as they kept track of my pace online and noticed a huge drop in pace but I finished it though (4:51:48). After getting home from Chicago that Monday, I was happy and disgusted with myself. Happy I survived “Hell and Back” but ticked that all of that training I did was trumped by the flu. That week on Thursday I told my wife that I want to run a 26.2 miler somewhere in the area just so I could prove to myself that I can get the 3:50 goal that I had trained for. She recommended that I take an easy run on Thursday afternoon to first see if my body could take more beating. I knock out an easy paced 8 miler and it felt GREAT! Once home she told me to sign up for the marathon in Grand Rapids (which was on Sunday). So I did. Two marathons in 7 days I kept asking myself?! Am I nuts? Guess I’ll find out. And I did! Ran the Grand Rapids marathon in 3:38:40! Marathon Maniac #3338 was born.

Since then I’ve been running an average of 50 to 60 miles a week (I’m currently at 168 lbs – lost 62 lbs thanks to running). Joined a couple other running clubs (Kalamazoo Area Runners, Fieldstone Grill Running Group) and thanks to some friends I’ve joined a 7:30 and faster pace group on my Saturday group runs. Spring of 2011 will be an exciting challenge. March I will be making a debut in my first ultra-marathon (Kal-Haven 33.5 Mile Ultra Trail Run). May I’m tackling 2 marathons (Kalamazoo Marathon and Bayshore Marathon) and the Grand Rapids Riverbank 25K run. I’m signed up for the Chicago as I’m looking for revenge on that course! Looking to also knock out Grand Rapids marathon to take another 2 marathons in 7 days adventure. - Scott VanLoo (#3338)

I love to explore new places on foot. As a military spouse, I get the opportunity to live in different areas of the country and running is the "host" that introduces me to each new area. In Arlington VA, my favorite route included running from Arlington National Cemetery to the Tidal Basin loop around the Jefferson Memorial and across the National Mall. In Kentucky, my legs worked extra hard on the rolling hills that weaved through farmland and horse pastures- I could run for miles and never see a single passing car. In Alaska, I learned that a water bottle will freeze solid after 3 miles in February and moose spotting is a great long run activity.

Another perk of being a running military spouse? Living in different areas allows me to meet, train, and race with Marathon Maniacs from all over the map. I enjoy the camaraderie this group of amazing people provides and know that no matter where Uncle Sam takes me next, Maniacs will be waiting to show me around (on foot, of course!). - Suzy Goodwin (#891)

From the Editor…

Here in the Pacific Northwest it has been cold and wet! We are so looking forward to the arrival of spring. February featured mostly races in the southern states like California, Louisiana, Florida and Texas . Hopefully as spring comes the warmer weather will follow. March features races in Arkansas, California , Virginia, Washington DC and New Jersey. If you are running a marathon this month and have pictures please send them my way. If you have a photo album Steve Walters and Monte on Facebook please send me a message and let me know. I want to encourage everyone to write me a story or reports. I know you all have stories to tell about these fun times and as I look across Maniac Nation, I can’t help, but think about the great stories all of you have about how you got into running and how marathoning has changed your life. I’ve set up a very simple form. And I want you to send me your story. Keep it to about 500 words and it can be about a race or about how you got into running and how it changed your life or just a thank you note to the Maniacs! - Steve “Marathon Freak” Walters MM#338 19 February 2011 Newsletter

Rhetorical Revelations and W(Rites)… from the Rambunctious Rev Dear Mr. President, In the the club’s infancy of a hundred-ish members, and for some time after, members frequently filled out the maniac Interview, which helped folks get to know one another, and we still can on our personal page. You always included the funny but prescient question, roughly "Do your friends and family think you’re crazy?" Well, yes, yes they do. But I thought it might be interesting to see what their answers to the same questions might be. Don't try this with the wrong relative. Maniac questionnaire as answered by a Maniac Relative February 27, 2011

{The setting: the downstairs living room of a comfortable split-level home in northern New Jersey. Rev is asking the Maniac Interview questions of a male relative who is rarely hesitant to say what he is thinking. His enters and leaves now and again.} Name: {an Anonymous Relative of Rev. Your Maniac #: “Let’s see, by the time I run, what is it, two marathons in three weeks? My maniac number will be… Infinity.” State you live in: “New Jersey. But compared to you, the state of Smart.” How many marathons have you run? “How far is that again? Hahahaha. I know, I know. How many have I run? Zero, ZEEEEEE-ROHHHHH! Did you hear me? Oh wait… I run errands, I run to the store, I run the lawnmower over my beautiful lawn… that added up to 26 miles last year. Does that count?” How many ultras have you run? “Oh, well, I don’t like to brag…dozens… hundreds, close to a thousand now. Yep, but like I said, I don’t like to brag.” What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance). “We had to run a mile in gym class. Most of us walked. Craig and I said we did four laps, but we really only did two. Oh alright, I ran a 5k. My daughter was running it. We had a good time.” What was the first marathon you ever ran? Did you have fun that day? “That would be…NEVER, but yes, I am sure I had fun any day you pick, at least as much fun as you! Remember, I saw you after New York!” … Maybe we’ll skip a few…. How long have you been a Maniac?… What was your most memorable marathon and why? …no, let’s try this one: If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why? “My daughter. No wait, I am not going to run one, so what is this, a trick question? But maybe Craig. Compared to him, I’d look good.” If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year? “That’s your question, really? If you hit the lottery, you couldn’t wait to run another marathon? And I thought I needed to get out more. “You ever heard of cruises? Bermuda? There’s a few new toys at Best Buy…3D TV, have you seen the new Volvo? A trip to California, maybe swing by Hawaii…but I’d still watch the Yankees right here on this couch…nothing better than right here, right Hon? Right? We got any more pretzels?” From what race did you receive your favorite finishers’ medal? “Oh, you get medals? Five, six hours of all that fun, AND you get a medal? Where do I sign up.” Where do you keep your finisher medals? “I’d put it right around the neck of the life-size bronze statue of myself I’d erect at City Hall…no wait, I’d hang it on the Empire State building. Yeah. Go up to the Observation Deck, and fling it over the antennae. That’d be cool, wouldn’t it, Baby?” Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear? “I’ve seen your T-shirts. You’re a walking billboard. Besides, I LIKE cotton.” If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it? “The moon. You know if you watch the History channel, you’d learn something. Watching those astronauts bouncing around…it is 1/6 gravity up there, so it’d be 1/6 the distance, right? Boing! Boing! Boing! Now that’d be fun!” What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal? “I need my coffee. A little eggs benedict, some apple-cinnamon French crepes with hickory-smoked slab bacon, there we go. You going to run on that? Post race? Anything on the grill.” What is your energy gel of choice? “Heineken.” Sport drink of choice? “Gimme another Heiny.” Which race would you never run again and why? “YES! Now you’re catching on.” (Yells upstairs :) “Hey Hon! He’s catching on!” What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why? “That’s easy. Christmas shopping. Or the rat race across the G.W. Bridge to Yonkers. Take your pick.” What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training? “Well, I get home from work, head downstairs to the big screen, amble over to the remote, push oh, three buttons, bend the knees, and settle in. On a good night, the missus brings the eats right to the couch. Other nights, I go all the way upstairs to the dining room table. Yep, yep, I try to do that part on an ‘every-other-day’ basis. See? I’ve been reading up on this exercise stuff.” Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it? “The Channel 3 weather girl let’s me know every night what I have to wear the next day.” Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons? “My yard is perfect. My garage is perfect. My wife is perfect. The Yankees are almost perfect. Life couldn’t be better. Besides, because of you, I have to not run to balance out the family, so you should be thanking ME.” Star Wars or Star Trek? Darth Vader or Captain Kirk? “Oh, you’re on another planet alright.”
