It is gratifying to know that this directory has become a standard reference book whenever vitalinformation is needed regarding the service organisations. Encouraged from the success of the Directory of institutions, the NIMH took up the task of compiling directoryof professionals.Brief bio-data of about 800 professionals has been compiled and reported in this publication. We have run through several problems during the course of this compilation. First, the question whether it is a complete listing can never be resolved as one does not really know the universe; second, it has been difficult to decidewho should be included and who should not be included: and third biographical details of the professionals listed in this directory atleast in the case of some individuals has changed so fast that it is difficult to keep track of the latest. By the time this directory is printed and distributed, it may not be a surprise to find out that a segment of the listed professionals have changed their place of work, as a result the entries relating to the address and telephone numbers etc. may require an amendment. Inspite of the above limitations, the directory does provide basic information on 'who is who' in the fieldof mentai retardation. It is hoped that this compilation would be useful for working professionals, particularly for referring cases to their colleagues elsewhere within the country or to refer persons with mental retardation to co-professionals. Regular feedback from the readers will tell us how useful this directory has been in actual practice. Comments, suggestions and amendments in the existing entries, are welcome Dr. I K Menon Direr, tor, NIMH INTRODUCTION Mental retardation is a condition requiring service from varied professionals. This makes it difficult for the families requiring help to get the appropriate services. Professionals also have difficulty knowing each other. This document is an effort to assist the needy people in the country. As the professionals working in the field of mental retardation are geographically located in different areas in the country, this document would help them in knowing their counterparts and to share their experience/knowledge. In addition, the parents of mentally handicapped children live in urban and rural areas and majority of the facilities are concentrated only in the cosmopolitan cities and major towns. Therefore it is felt that the data in this directory could guide the parents about the addresses of required professionals available at the nearest place for consultation and treatment of their child with mental handicap. Further the information embedded in this document will also help the policy makers and administrators in the Government in planning for human resource development and establishment of new training facilities. According to the earlier survey (1990) conducted by NIMI-I, it was estimated that the 4,466 professionals work on a part-time or whole-time basis with 16,212 children with mental handicap in the special schools and institutions in the country. Of the 4,466 professionals, little over 1500 are either unqualified or persons who are not directly working with mentally handicapped persons. Therefore, it is estimated there are about 3000 qualified professionals in this field. This document is the outcome of a questionnaire-based survey method. The questionnaires were mailed to known Government Institutions, voluntary organizations, special schools and child guidance clinics working in the field of mental handicap in the country numbering about 430, requesting to fill-in the proforma by the qualified professionals working with them. Two reminders were sent with a gap of 45 days between each reminder. Filled-in proforma were received from about 800 professionals working in the field of mental handicap. When the data is considered, one can see that the information -received for this compilation constitutes less than one-third of the total number of the professionals in the field. A sample proforma is given at Appendix - 1 Though data was solicited for twenty items, the information on nine items was considered to b of functional value to the users. Therefore each record in the directory consists of nine fields, The professionals working with mentally handicapped persons were only included in this compilation and remaining professionals working in other disabilities handicapped have been such as orthopedically handicapped physically handicapped, hearing handicapped, visually deleted for obvious reasons. As the term 'qualified' is subjective, its usage isavoided through this document. Information about those who do not have professional qualification but have beenassociated in the field of mental retardation is also included. The directory is divided into four sections; section one includes alphabetical listof names of the professionals along with their bio-data, working in different states in the country; Section two comprises namesof professionals working in different professions and the entries are listed state-wise under each profession;Section three lists out names of professionals in alphabetical order working in different states in the countrywhile section four includes the sample proforma and two tables. As mentioned in the earlier para, the responserate in the survey is only 30% which is not quite encouraging. Therefore, those who have not already sentthe filled-in proforma may kindly do so to enabe us to update the directory in the next edition. I am grateful to all the professionals who have responded to our questionnaire promptly, without whose cooperation my efforts would not have been successful. I am also thankful to our Director, Dr.D.K.Menon for his guidance and encouragement. My thanks to MIs Sin Graphics for the Cover Designand to MIs Poornakala Offset Printers for printing this directory neatly and elegantly. I sincerely hope that the data included in this directory will be useful to the parentsof mentally handicapped children professionals, administrators and policy makers at the helmof affairs in different Ministries and departments.
