The Top Five Films You Did Not Know Were Based on Roald Dahl Stories
The top five films you didn’t know were based on Roald Dahl stories Many Roald Dahl stories have been turned into family film favourites that we know and love, but did you know there’s more than just the books? Roald Dahl is responsible for a number of classic screenplays and storylines that we wouldn’t normally associate him with. Here’s five of our favourites, which you can enjoy once again on the big screen as part of Roald Dahl on Film: 1. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Roald Dahl was responsible for the screenplay of this truly magical, musical film. In fact, it was Roald Dahl that added in the Child Catcher as an extra character – so he’s responsible for giving us all those nightmares when we were small! 2. 36 hours This war movie released in 1965 was based on the short story ‘Beware of the Dog’ by Roald Dahl, which was first published in Harper’s Magazine in 1946. The story was also said to have influenced television series, The Prisoner. 3. You Only Live Twice The screenplay of this James Bond classic was another of Roald Dahl’s after he was approached by James Bond producers, Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli. The screenplay was the first to stray from Ian Fleming’s original story, as Roald Dahl famously said that the original wasn’t Fleming’s best work. 4. Gremlins The 1984 Steven Spielberg film Gremlins features characters developed from one of Roald Dahl’s earliest books, The Gremlins. In fact, there’s every chance that it was Roald Dahl’s first ever book for children! It impressed his bosses at the British Embassy so much that they sent it to Walt Disney to make into a feature film. -

Partners in Health in Neno District, Malawi
C ASES IN G LOBAL H EALTH D ELIVERY GHD-029 JULY 2013 Partners In Health in Neno District, Malawi In May 2012, Ophelia Dahl, cofounder and executive director of Partners In Health (PIH), an international health nongovernmental organization (NGO), was preparing for the Board of Directors’ meeting. On the agenda was an in-depth review of Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (the translation of “Partners In Health” in Chichewa; APZU), PIH’s sister site in Neno District, Malawi. Dahl reflected on her two trips to Neno, the first in 2008 and the second in 2011. She recalled how, in 2008, she had traveled for hours along a worn-out dirt road and visited public health clinics that seemed neglected. In fact, the district as a whole seemed abandoned. In 2011, she visited Neno’s lively primary school, ate at a local restaurant, and got cash out of an ATM machine. With limited primary data from the field, Dahl wondered how to demonstrate the changes that had occurred during this time period to the Board of Directors. What was APZU’s impact? Overview of Malawi The Republic of Malawi is a landlocked, democratic country in southeastern Africa and one of the most densely populated on the continent (see Exhibit 1 for map of Malawi). Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique, and Lake Malawi border Malawi’s 118,484 square kilometers. Major religions are Christianity (82.7%) and Islam (13%).1 Official languages are English and Chichewa. History The arrival of Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone in 1859 marked present-day Malawi’s first significant Western contact. -

Ellery Queen Master Detective
Ellery Queen Master Detective Ellery Queen was one of two brainchildren of the team of cousins, Fred Dannay and Manfred B. Lee. Dannay and Lee entered a writing contest, envisioning a stuffed‐shirt author called Ellery Queen who solved mysteries and then wrote about them. Queen relied on his keen powers of observation and deduction, being a Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson rolled into one. But just as Holmes needed his Watson ‐‐ a character with whom the average reader could identify ‐‐ the character Ellery Queen had his father, Inspector Richard Queen, who not only served in that function but also gave Ellery the access he needed to poke his nose into police business. Dannay and Lee chose the pseudonym of Ellery Queen as their (first) writing moniker, for it was only natural ‐‐ since the character Ellery was writing mysteries ‐‐ that their mysteries should be the ones that Ellery Queen wrote. They placed first in the contest, and their first novel was accepted and published by Frederick Stokes. Stokes would go on to release over a dozen "Ellery Queen" publications. At the beginning, "Ellery Queen" the author was marketed as a secret identity. Ellery Queen (actually one of the cousins, usually Dannay) would appear in public masked, as though he were protecting his identity. The buying public ate it up, and so the cousins did it again. By 1932 they had created "Barnaby Ross," whose existence had been foreshadowed by two comments in Queen novels. Barnaby Ross composed four novels about aging actor Drury Lane. After it was revealed that "Barnaby Ross is really Ellery Queen," the novels were reissued bearing the Queen name. -
