Planning permission is sought to retain the existing roof-top telecommunications equipment that is attached to the existing chimney breast which was installed in 2007-2008. Planning permission is also sought to provide a GRP shroud in order to conceal the transmission dish and lower portion of the antenna from view. As part of the proposed remedial works, the existing cable tray/conduit and external cabling would be re-routed internally. 1.2. The proposed shroud would be no higher than the existing chimney. The antenna would project around 2.6m above the shroud. The proposed shroud would be made from GRP and would have an external finish that would have a brick appearance. 1.3. The proposal outlines that the existing 300mm transmission dish would also be replaced with a modern 300mm transmission dish relocated to the top of the chimney cap. 1.4. Planning permission is required for the works because they are not classed as permitted development under Part 24 of The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Amendment)(England) Order 2001, due to the fact that they are to be installed on a Grade II Listed Building. -

Midland Lodge, Sutton Park
MIDLAND LODGE, SUTTON PARK A history of the building with details of its architecture, its association with two well-known tenants and the establishment of Sutton Coldfield’s Vesey Club in 1888. Roy Billingham Midland Lodge is a residential property situated within Sutton Park, designed by William Jenkins, a Birmingham architect, and built in 1880 for the Warden and Society of Sutton Coldfield. Following the Town’s incorporation in 1886, ownership passed to the new Corporation of Sutton Coldfield, and to Birmingham City Council in 1974 after Government reorganisation of local authority boundaries. The site of Midland Lodge (O.S. Grid Ref. SP 1121 9715) is adjacent to the Midland Gate entrance to Sutton Park at the western end of Midland Road which was constructed as a private road by the Midland Railway Company in 1879 to provide direct access for train passengers to and from the Park for their Sutton Park railway station. “New Lodge”, as the cottage was originally called, had several tenants prior to 1886 when Benjamin Stone, Sutton Coldfield’s first Mayor, took over the tenancy in order to meet the necessary residential qualifications to become a burgess of the Town. During his four years as Mayor, 1886-90, the lodge was known as “The Mayor’s Cottage” which he treated as his pied- à-terre, his own home being in Grange Lane, Erdington. After Stone terminated his tenancy in 1891 the cottage was referred to ever afterwards as “Midland Lodge”. Erdington Abbey 1850-1876-2001 Michael Hodgetts Benedictine History Symposium 2001 ERDINGTON ABBEY, 1850-1876-2001 Michael Hodgetts From 1876 until 1922, the arch-abbey of Beuron in Württemberg had a daughter-house in England at Erdington, four and a half miles north-east of Birmingham. The parish is still universally known as ‘the Abbey’, although it has been served by Redemptorists since 1922 and the claustral buildings were sold to a local school in 1994. The church itself celebrated its one hundred and fiftieth anniversary on 11 June last year: it was built by a wealthy Tractarian convert, Daniel Henry Haigh, on whose retirement in 1876 it was taken over by the Benedictines from Beuron. My parents were married there in 1934, and I have known it since 1942. So I was delighted when Abbot Scott asked me to mark the anniversary by a contribution to this Symposium. Until the 19th century, Erdington was merely a hamlet in the huge medieval parish of Aston, which included all the countryside between Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield, seven miles to the north-east and for several miles to the east as well. There had been recusant gentry within three or four miles, but not in Erdington itself. About 1690 Andrew Bromwich established a Masshouse at (Old) Oscott, now known as Maryvale, three miles north-west, in Handsworth parish, which, like Erdington, is now a suburb of Birmingham. Even in 1767, however, only two Papists were reported in the whole of Aston parish, though in Sutton Coldfield there were thirty, and in Birmingham and Edg-baston, on the far side of it, there were well over three hundred. -

Abstract This thesis demonstrates that the First World War did not have a major long-term impact on the evangelical free churches of Birmingham. Whilst many members were killed in the conflict, and local church auxiliaries were disrupted, once the participants – civil and military – returned, the work and mission of the churches mostly continued as they had before the conflict, the exception being the Adult School movement, which had been in decline prior to the conflict. It reveals impacts on local church life, including new opportunities for women amongst the Baptist and Congregational churches where they began to serve as deacons. The advent of conscription forced church members to personally face the issue as to whether as Christians they could in conscience bear arms. The conflict also speeded ecumenical co-operation nationally, in areas such as recognition of chaplains, and locally, in organising local prayer meetings and commemorations. -

An assessment of the housing potential of each site was made by assessing its developable area. This was limited by factors like topography, irregular shaped plots and site specific constraints. Where sites have already been subject to a detailed appraisal e.g. through a planning application or development brief, this capacity figure has been used. This approach has allowed the Site Allocations & Delivery DPD to consider a broad range of sites across the Borough and ensure that the figures contained within the Core Strategy can comfortably be met. It is important to stress that the housing capacity figures are merely a broad indication of a site’s capacity.
