Only they look at the back of the card to see if they are correct. Higher bids will get the first chance to answer the question. If a player doesn’t think they can answer the question correctly, they may want to use a lower Bidding card. Or, if they think another player might bid high for the question, they might also bid with a high card to try to cancel that other player’s bid. Used Bidding cards will be discarded after each question is resolved. Because they occur as students enter the beginnings of adulthood, these changes may well inform, if not dictate, the rest of students’ lives. It is incumbent on the teachers of adolescents to stimulate young brains and transmit useful material that students may later use, but it is imperative that we help guide students through a time in their lives when they are just discovering their identities. The goal of this unit is not to assign everyone a new, more mature identity; rather, it is to provide students with an appropriate framework through which they may begin forming their own identities and continue to do so long after they graduate. In Bob Fecho’s words, I aim to provide students with “ample opportunities for students to use writing to explore who they are becoming and how they relate to the larger culture around them” (2011). His school bus used to loop around Sannerville Way and the pieces could be seen from the road as well as the train. A couple of years prior to this, Remser’s mum randomly bought him a copy of Spraycan Art, and he knew straight away that it was something he wanted to be part of. In early 2000 he moved to London and hooked up with the DNK/CWR boys, they were way better than him and super-active but this experience pushed him to develop his style and learn about all aspects of graffiti writing. FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY, 1994 M.A. CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY, 1998 THE IDEOLOGICAL AND NARRATIVE STRUCTURES OF HIP-HOP MUSIC: A STUDY OF SELECTED HIP-HOP ARTISTS Advisor: Dr. Viktor Osinubi Dissertation Dated May 2009 This study examined the discourse of selected Hip-Hop artists and the biographical aspects of the works. The study was based on the structuralist theory of Roland Barthes which claims that many times a performer’s life experiences with class struggle are directly reflected in his artistic works. Since rap music is a counter-culture invention which was started by minorities in the South Bronx borough ofNew York over dissatisfaction with their community, it is a cultural phenomenon that fits into the category of economic and political class struggle. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of New York artists Shawn Carter (Jay Z), Nasir Jones (Nas), and southern artists Clifford Harris II (T.I.) and Wesley Weston (Lii’ Flip). The artists were selected on the basis of geographical spread and diversity. Although Hip-Hop was again founded in New York City, it has now spread to other parts of the United States and worldwide. The study investigated the biography of the artists to illuminate their struggles with poverty, family dysfunction, aggression, and intimidation. 1 The artists were found to engage in lyrical battles; therefore, their competitive discourses were analyzed in specific Hip-Hop selections to investigate their claims of authorship, imitation, and authenticity, including their use of sexual discourse and artistic rivalry, to gain competitive advantage.

Keskeisinä tavoitteina tutkielmassa on selvittää edellä mainittujen nimitysten yleisyys R&B:ssä ja hip hopissa, tutkia nimitysten merkityksiä ja konnotaatioita eri sanakirjoissa ja laulujen konteksteissa ja pohtia näiden nimitysten ja musiikkilajien sosiaalista ulottuvuutta ja yhteisöjen ja laulujen sisältöjen vuorovaikutusta. Tutkielma on sekä kvantitatiivinen että kvalitatiivinen. Kvantitatiivinen tieto pohjautuu vuosittaisiin Top 20- lauluihin Billboardin R&B and hip hop- listoilta (yhteensä 300 kappaletta). Tiedonkeruu tapahtui AntConc- ohjelman avulla, jossa kerätyistä laulunsanoista sai muodostettua oman korpuksen tarkempaa numeroanalyysia varten. Kvalitatiivinen tieto taas rakentuu monista sanakirjoista ja laulujen sisältöjen laadullisista analyyseista. Kvalitatiivista tietoa täydentävät moninaiset kuvaukset R&B:stä ja hip hopista, näiden musiikkilajien paikka ja vaikutus yhteisöissä, Sapir-Whorf- hypoteesi, sanastotutkimus naisiin liittyvistä sanoista, seksismin lajit ja lyhyt slangin ja afrikkalaisamerikkalaisen englannin luonnehdinta. Tutkimuksen mukaan kaikki neljä sanaa olivat mukautettavissa sekä positiiviseen että negatiiviseen kontekstiin. Kontekstista riippuen nimitykset sisälsivät joko negatiivisia tai positiivisia konnotaatioita. Siinä missä tämä tulos saattoi olla spekuloitavissa girl, baby ja shorty sanojen yhteydessä, sama tulos sanan bitch kohdalla oli yllättävämpää sen yleisesti halventavaksi oletetun luonteen takia.

During the 1980s three revolutions took hold of popular music: the emergence of disc-jockeys as a creative force (in particular in techno music), the advent of hip-hop (and therefore of the "rapper"), and the marriage of industrial music, heavy metal and hardcore (generically associated with the "cyber-punk" culture). The idea of rapping was imported into New York by the Jamaican immigrants, who were already familiar with "toasting" (a reggae artist talking in rhyme over the instrumental sections of a record). Some of them became disc-jockeys ("dj") that traveled around New York carrying their "sound system" to perform at block parties. In 1975 in the Bronx of New York, one of them, Clive "Hercules" Campbell, or "Kool Herc", started making music with two turntables out of breakbeats (the instrumental breaks of a song that focused on the rhythm section, the favorite part of the song for most dancers), while another young black man of the Bronx, Theodore "Grand Wizard" Livingstone was accidentally discovering the "skratching" sound of a turntable.
