Air BP to supply free fuel to a number of air ambulance services in England and Wales 1 April 2020 Air BP, the aviation division of BP, will provide free jet fuel for use by the helicopters of a number of UK air ambulance services, supporting their life-saving work during the current coronavirus pandemic. The air ambulance crews are on stand-by 24/7, ready to respond to emergencies where they are needed most. All these services are charitable organisations that BP already supplies with jet fuel. Those included in this initiative, in place from today, 1 April 2020, until at least the end of April 2020, are: • Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, based at Almondsbury, Gloucestershire • Midlands Air Ambulance Charity at Strensham, Shropshire and Cosford, Worcestershire • Wales Air Ambulance Charity at Dafen, Carmarthenshire • Yorkshire Air Ambulance at Topcliffe, North Yorkshire and Nostell Priory, West Yorkshire. Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Great Western Air Ambulance receive fuel directly from Air BP. Wales Air Ambulance and Midlands Air Ambulance Charity are supplied by Air BP customer Babcock International. Jon Platt, CEO, Air BP said: “We are pleased to be able to play a small part and support these emergency service organisations as they continue to provide a critical service to communities in these difficult times. Our commitment to safe, reliable fuelling operations remains unwavering and we’re grateful for the hard work of our front-line Air BP operators who continue to enable us to meet the needs of our customers.” This initiative follows BP’s earlier announcement that it is supplying free fuel to the UK’s emergency services ground transport vehicles. Investigation into the accident of Richard Hammond Accident involving RICHARD HAMMOND (RH) On 20 SEPTEMBER 2006 At Elvington Airfield, Halifax Way, Elvington YO41 4AU SUMMARY 1. The BBC Top Gear programme production team had arranged for Richard Hammond (RH) to drive Primetime Land Speed Engineering’s Vampire jet car at Elvington Airfield, near York, on Wednesday 20th September 2006. Vampire, driven by Colin Fallows (CF), was the current holder of the Outright British Land Speed record at 300.3 mph. 2. Runs were to be carried out in only one direction along a pre-set course on the Elvington runway. Vampire’s speed was to be recorded using GPS satellite telemetry. The intention was to record the maximum speed, not to measure an average speed over a measured course, and for RH to describe how it felt. 3. During the Wednesday morning RH was instructed how to drive Vampire by Primetime’s principals, Mark Newby (MN) and CF. Starting at about 1 p.m., he completed a series of 6 runs with increasing jet power and at increasing speed. The jet afterburner was used on runs 4 to 6, but runs 4 and 5 were intentionally aborted early. 4. The 6th run took place at just before 5 p.m. and a maximum speed of 314 mph was achieved. This speed was not disclosed to RH. 5. Although the shoot was scheduled to end at 5 p.m., it was decided to apply for an extension to 5:30 p.m. to allow for one final run to secure more TV footage of Vampire running with the after burner lit.

Since then the matter has been clarified somewhat. There are two projects, an ongoing upgrade of the communications suite which is undertaken by Airbus Helicopters as an extension of the original purchase deal and the second is very much a project to make changes to the role suite. It is the latter that will eventually appear as a [European] tender. At present the Bundespolizei have a pro- ject to clarify their needs before putting out any tender document that is expected to change the role fit – potentially the EO/IR, work station, searchlight, mounts and other components – to lighten the fit as a re- flection of more modern technology and capabilities. It seems that the original information although accu- rate in a sense was very premature in timing. JAPAN NPA: The National Police Agency [NPA] of Japan has placed an order for two H135 light-twin helicop- ters, making it the first in Japan to operate the Helionix-equipped helicopters, when these are delivered in 2019. The H135 will be deployed by the Wakayama Prefectural Police and the Kumamoto Prefectural Po- lice for law enforcement missions. ©Airbus Helicopters Japan At the same time, the AS365 N3+ and H155 earlier ordered in 2015 have now been delivered to the NPA for deployment to the Fukuoka Prefectural Police and the Kagawa Prefectural Police respectively.

The modification is set up in a generic way and can be used with different types of EO/IR. Initially it will be used for the FLIR Systems Star SAFIRE 380-HD family. The Croatian Police, the initial customer of this installation, took delivery of the first modified helicopter in August this year.

Where most training rigs are rudimentary and cost cutting through the use of redundant airframes the WA Police installation is a dedi- cated new build at a cost of $250,000. The indoor winch simulator means the force can increase essential 25/7 training for its officers with the added bonus of not using up flight hours. Despite the significant first cost this rig should save money and free up the two helicopters for more frontline patrols. Hopefully 2020 will bring each of us all emergency services aviation that we can be proud of. The people have spoken and it appears assured that one of the most embarrassing period of Brit- ish politics has come out into clear air. Brexit is to happen despite the worst efforts of many self serving politicians who believed they alone knew what the people should be thinking and voting. They were wrong and many are now seeking new pastimes in keeping with their narrow view on life. I suspect that 2020 will bring us another group of displaced ‘leaders of men’ in Yorkshire. The clock is ticking and the resolution of that Inspectorate [HMICFRS] report is beckoning. The new political situation in Britain means that I have less reason to refer to the “Peoples Republic of Wakefield” for this former left wing stronghold has turned to supporting Boris in the National vot- ing process. While it is doubtful that local politics will follow the seed change, the Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) are elected every four years, the last election was in May 2016 and the next election will be on May 7, 2020. Time enough for the present incumbent to feel the heat. On the world front many will recognise that Brexit put the all knowing liberal elite in their place without riot or bloodshed but other potentially more volatile nations face similar challenges.
