The News Bulletin of the International Tennis Federation www.itftennis.com Junior contest starts Down Under The Australian Open Junior Championships got underway on Sunday, with Hungary’s Timea Babos the favourite to claim a first junior Grand Slam title in her debut appearance at Melbourne Park. The current world No. 2 is undefeated in 2010 having won the Loy Yang Traralgon tournament in Melbourne last week. Russian No. 1 Daria Gavrilova, part of Russia’s 2009 Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas winning team, will also be a contender. Last year’s runner-up Laura Robson (GBR) could be Babos’s closest rival. Having recently competed in the Australian Open women’s qualifying event, she has more Timea Babos (HUN) experience at this level than any of the other challengers. A dark horse for the title (Photo: Hiromaso Mano) is the Czech Karolina Pliskova. Pliskova enters the tournament based on her professional ranking and in the second half of 2009 she claimed the first professional title of her career. 25 January 2010 Issue 4 In the boys’ event, Australian hopes rest with Jason Kubler. The youngster from Queensland, who was part of Australia’s victorious Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas team last year, will look to emulate compatriot and 2008 Australian Open junior champion Bernard Tomic. Two players with some solid Grand Slam experience will also contend for the title. The formidable talents of 2009 ITF World Champion Daniel Berta (SWE) and current world No. 2 Gianni Mina (FRA) will return to the ITF Junior Circuit at Melbourne Park, as both players look to reassert their authority over their peers as they take their first tilt at title success in 2010.
