The Melbourne gangland killings were the of Underbelly: The Gangland War criminal underworld figures in Melbourne between January and August The murders were in a series of retributive killings involving various underworld groups. The deaths caused a sustained power vacuum within Melbourne's criminal community, as various factions fought for control and influence. Many of the murders remain unsolved, although detectives from the Purana Taskforce believe that Carl Williams was responsible for at least 10 of them. Since the confession of Williams, the ultimate source of the violence has become public knowledge. On his 29th birthday, while meeting with and his half brother on 13 October at a suburban park in Gladstone ParkJason Moran shot Carl Williams in the stomach over a dispute about money relating to their amphetamine trade. The majority of underworld crime figures and major incidents can be traced back to the Painters and Dockers Union that existed on Melbourne's waterfront after the Second World War. I am a huge fan of the Underbelly TV series and my wife and I have watched all four shows shown here in NZ, and we did attempt to watch the Kiwi-made one based on Mr Asia, but nope, rubbish when John SilvesterAndrew Rule. He got lucky the day Jason Moran shot him in the belly instead of in the head. Carl didn't return the favour: one by one, Moran and his brother and father and their mates were shot dead during an underworld war that was really an Underbelly: The Gangland War program. But Underbelly: The Gangland War luck ran out when the Purana Taskforce came calling. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 35 years. And that's the truth.
