Blaenhonddan Primary Page 1 School Aims

Our aim is to educate your child to his/her full potential in a happy, safe and caring environment. Children need to be taught and to develop intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically and morally.

Each child is different and has different needs and capabilities in all these areas. The school aims to make the learning and teaching activities stimulating, vibrant and relevant to the children's needs and abilities. We aim to make school life enjoyable and meaningful and thus a continued motivation to learn. Children will be introduced to and taught, skills that will enable them to take their place successfully in an increasingly complex technological society.

We work to meet these needs and capabilities by:-

• creating an interesting learning environment

• providing our children with high quality teaching, books, materials and equipment in order that they may learn

• helping the children to become independent learners by teaching them key skills and by establishing good working habits

• making school a happy, and healthy place

• establishing a well ordered school based on self-discipline and respect for each other

• requiring honesty, truthfulness, diligence, perseverance, and good manners from the children and to help the children develop these qualities.

• educating the children to care for themselves, for others, for the school, for the natural environment and for their community

• developing good relationships between home and school and maintaining open dialogue based on confidence and trust

• encouraging parental involvement and co-operation with the school and to ensure that the school is a focal point and central to the community within which it exists.

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 5 Admission to School

Children are admitted after their third birthday into our part-time Nursery. Requests should be made to the Local Authority. Arrangements will be made with you, as parents, to visit the school and meet the staff during the term before your child starts Nursery Education. Your child will be invited to visit too! We want your child to be happy and secure with us.

Children aged 4+ are admitted into our full time Reception class in the September of each school year. Written confirmation of the offer of a place for your child at the school must be received before the closing date set. (This varies annually but is usually some time in February/March before your child attends school in the Autumn Term.) It is essential that parents ensure the return of the completed School Admission Form to the Local Authority. An ‘Information for Parents’ booklet will be distributed at the end of the Autumn term. Reception parents are invited to a welcome meeting with the staff during the Summer Term prior to the beginning of the academic year (September).

Requests for admission, must be done centrally via the Admissions Officer. Neath Local Authority controls and administers the entry of children to our school. This is the case for all maintained schools in our authority. We are governed by their admission policy.

The school building and site

The school is made up of two buildings. The large main building houses Foundation Phase Year 1 and 2, Key Stage 2 classes, the LSC class, the school kitchen, hall, which doubles as a dining room, a disabled toilet, a medical room, school office and Headteacher's Office Two of the Foundation Phase (Nursery and Reception) classes are housed in a separate stone building near the entrances to the campus. Staff and visitor car parking is to the left of the main building. The school field and playgrounds surround the buildings.

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 6 Arriving and leaving school For the safety of the children and smooth running of the school the following apply:

• Infant aged children must be brought to and collected from school by a responsible adult • Parents bringing or collecting children by car should not stop on the zigzag yellow lines marked in front of the school gates and railings. • Children should not arrive in school before 8.40a.m. unless attending Breakfast Club. The bell will ring for children to meet their teachers in order to be supervised into the buildings at 8.50a.m. • During unsuitable weather the children will be welcomed into the buildings in an orderly manner and not be expected to form lines after 8.40a.m.

Visiting School We are happy to welcome visitors, friends and/or parents to school. If your visit is not known in advance please report to the school office (Main building). There is a CCTV camera in place and an intercom system to gain entry. All visitors to the school must sign the visitors’ book and receive an appropriate identification badge.

Working in the School Anyone working or having contact with children at the school must undergo an enhanced disclosure by the Disclosure and Barring Service. The school follows a strict policy called Safer Recruitment when appointing new staff to the school.

Learning Support Centre

The Learning Support Centre (known as Class 7) caters for a maximum of nine Key Stage 2 pupils with statements. The children attend from a wide area within County. Ms C. Morgan (teacher) and 2 or3 TAs (depending on need) staff the class. The aim of the unit is to provide the children with a caring, secure and stimulating environment in which their educational, emotional and social needs may be addressed. The children in the unit are expected to study the full range of National Curriculum subjects as well as any individualised programmes that are written on their statements. The children usually arrive at school by taxi or they are dropped off by parents. The LA ALN Department allocate the places for the pupils following decisions made by a panel of professionals.

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 7 Complaints

Should any parent need to complain about any matter of the school they are encouraged to arrange an appointment with the Headteacher who will deal sensitively with any complaint. If the complaint is not resolved a copy of the Complaints Policy and procedure is available upon request or on the school website.

Use of the Welsh Language

The children are encouraged to use incidental Welsh and part of each day in every class in the school is spent in speaking Welsh. St David's Day is an important part of the school calendar when children are given the opportunity to enjoy and share their Welsh heritage. Pupils are given opportunities throughout the year, where appropriate, to develop and apply knowledge and understanding of the cultural, economic, environmental, historical and linguistic characteristics of Wales. The school actively promotes the development of the Welsh language.

School Organisation and Curriculum

The school is organised into seven full time classes and a part time Nursery. The school also has a Learning Support Centre (LSC).

The Foundation Phase The Foundation Phase is a curriculum for 3 to 7-year-olds.

What will children learn? The curriculum for the Foundation Phase builds on the Desirable Outcomes for Children’s Learning Before Compulsory School Age and includes aspects of the guidance for Key Stage 1 to form a new curriculum. The new curriculum has been developed under seven Areas of Learning.

The Seven Areas of Learning are: Personal and Social Development and Well-being; Language, Literacy and Communication Skills; Mathematical Development; Bilingualism and Multi-cultural Understanding; Knowledge and Understanding of the World; Physical Development; and Creative Development.

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 8 The Foundation Phase places great emphasis on developing children’s skills and understanding; • personal, social, emotional, physical and intellectual well-being so as to develop the whole child; • positive attitudes to learning so that they enjoy learning and will want to continue with their education for longer; • self-esteem and self-confidence to experiment, investigate, learn new things and form new relationships; • creative and expressive skills and observation to encourage their development as individuals with different ways of responding to experiences; • and activities in the outdoors where they can have first-hand experience of solving real problems in aspects such as mathematics and science and learn about conservation and sustainability.

How will children learn? The Foundation Phase places great emphasis on children learning through practical activities. Young children are given more opportunities to gain first hand experiences through play and active involvement rather than by completing exercises in books. For example mathematics is more practical so that children can see how problems are solved and how important mathematics is in their everyday lives. There is more emphasis on children understanding how things work and on finding different ways to solve problems.

Why is the outdoors important? The Foundation Phase places great importance on staff using the outdoors as another classroom where children can work on a daily basis. There are many reasons for encouraging children to use the outdoors such as: • children’s health and fitness benefit from running, jumping and skipping outside and using toys and equipment that cannot be used inside; • children can experience nature at first hand - how the weather changes and how plants and animals react to the different seasons; • problem solving can relate to real experiences such as, how to move logs from one area to another; • children can experience aspects such as conservation and sustainability at first hand; and they can develop a love of nature and undertaking activities out of doors.

Milk Milk is provided for each Infant aged child who requests it daily.

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 9 The National Curriculum in Wales (7-11 Years) This is a Government framework that sets out what must be taught to children in school, and at what age. It is designed to provide a good grounding in language, mathematics and science. The National Curriculum is now only for Key Stage 2pupils- Years 3 - 6, age 7 - 11. However from September 2008 the Welsh Assembly placed much more emphasis on developing skills in the curriculum at Years 3, 4 and 5. Our school has changed our curriculum accordingly and we now adopt the CORNERSTONES programme to ensure our pupils get the best opportunity to develop these skills.

What does the National Curriculum cover? The National Curriculum covers a broad range of subjects, divided into core and foundation subjects. Particular emphasis is given to the core subjects: · English · Welsh (as a first or second language) · Mathematics · Science Foundation subjects: · Design and Technology · Information Technology · History · Geography · Music · Art · Physical Education. Children must also study religious education according to the syllabus laid down by the local authority.

Standards Each subject in the National Curriculum is divided into a series of outcomes from 1-6 in the Foundation Phase and levels in KS2 from 1 to 8. The level shows what standard a child has achieved. Levels are like the rungs of a ladder and children move up them from year to year. At the end of Foundation Phase most children will be working within outcomes 4-6. The majority will reach Outcome 5. At the end of Key Stage 2, most children will be working within levels 2 to 5. The majority will reach level 4. At the end of each Key Stage, you'll be told at what level your child is working in language, mathematics and science. These levels are assessed by teachers.

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 10 National Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF) The LNF sets the skills we expect learners to develop. Within literacy we expect learners to become accomplished in:

• oracy across the curriculum • reading across the curriculum • writing across the curriculum. Within numeracy we expect learners to become accomplished in:

• developing numerical reasoning • using number skills • using measuring skills • using data skills. Teachers will be able to use the LNF to:

• develop curriculum content to ensure that all learners have opportunities to develop and refine the skills set out in the LNF • integrate literacy and numeracy into their teaching – whatever the subject matter • inform discussions with parents/carers, learners and other teachers about learner performance • help learners with their own self-assessment activities and planning for learning • monitor, assess and report on individual learner performance • identify learners who may benefit from intervention or who are working beyond age-related expectations.

Additional Learning Needs You will be informed if your child is experiencing difficulty in his/her learning or behaviour. Children with ALN are helped in three ways. Firstly the class teacher will give the child suitable work and help. Secondly the school's specialist ALN Co- ordinator Mr Matthew Owens will advise the class teacher and may suggest support for your child in the classroom. Thirdly the Local Education Authority's specialist help and expertise may be called upon. Parents are kept informed at all stages of this process.

Accessibility Please note that this prospectus can be made available in other formats. Contact the school’s office in order to make your requirements known.

An Accessibility Plan to ensure that disabled pupils, staff, and visitors have equal access to the curriculum and premises is available at the school.

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 11 Religious Education Although R.E is not part of the National Curriculum it is a statutory requirement. Collective worship is held daily and local clergy are invited to speak to the children during the year. The emphasis is broadly Christian, and children learn prayers. The children are introduced to the major features of the five world religions e.g. Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Judaism during class lessons. Please speak with the Headteacher if you wish to withdraw your child from R.E. or collective worship. The children from each class present an assembly to their families.

Personal and Social Education (PSE) PSE is included in all aspects of school life and the curriculum. All children are expected to be considerate, thoughtful, caring and helpful to everyone. The children are encouraged to share their problems, feelings and concerns in ‘circle time.’ Health related issues will also be discussed linked to “Healthy Living.”

Sex Education Class teachers and the School Nurse teach sex education at an appropriate level to all children in the school. The children learn about family life, caring for themselves and others, looking after themselves, the differences between males and females and what happens at puberty. The school's policy on sex education is available for parents to see at any time. Parent's comments are welcome. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from sex education lessons.

Educational Visits Each class makes an educational visit at least once per term. The visits are linked to the topic being studied by the class and are necessary to the child's education. They usually take place during the day. The children also visit local sites and places of interest regularly. In order for a child to participate in any visit consent form must be completed and returned to the school. Any child not returning them will not be allowed to participate. Year 6 pupils are invited to go on a Residential Trip to Park during the year.

Extra Curricular Activities Sports Clubs (rugby, netball, football) are held on a regular basis at different times of the year after school. Our Knitting Nanas attend school on Wednesday afternoons to teach knitting and sewing skills to pupils. Services and productions by the children mark the major events during the school year usually; Harvest, Christmas, St David's Day. Easter and a Leaver's Service at the end of the Summer

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 12 term. Parents and/or local community are invited to join us. Rainbows, Brownies and Guides that use the school hall after hours.

Charging and Remissions Policy Although no charge is made for school time activities parents/guardians are invited to make voluntary contributions to make funds go further. No child will be excluded from such activities simply on the basis of non-contribution but at the same time visits/activities may be cancelled for the entire group/class if sufficient funds to cover the cost are not available. Please speak to the Headteacher if you have any concerns over cost. Your concerns will be treated in confidence.

Homework All children are expected to read at home in the evening. We provide books for this purpose. The Foundation Phase run a reading programme and parents will be invited to a meeting to explain its organisation within the school and how parents and teachers work as a team.

Homework set for your child will depend on the teacher's judgement of how much extra practice an individual needs and will vary from class to class. You will receive information from your child's class teacher about topics taught and homework procedures every term.

We endeavour to make homework a positive experience for your child by encouraging and praising success.

Lunches

School meals are served in the hall. Children who wish to have a school dinner can choose to have dinner from 1 day to the full 5 days (Monday to Friday), OR bring a packed lunch daily. (Please see Healthy Lunchbox information) Dinner money must be paid in full IN ADVANCE every FRIDAY in order for your child to have dinners the following Monday to Friday. If the money is not paid on the Friday, then your child will need to bring sandwiches for the following week. If you wish to pay by cheque please make it payable to NPTCBC. If you wish to pay by cash, please put into a sealed envelope with child’s name and class. Mrs. Sheppard, the school clerk will be happy to give confidential help and advice if you wish to apply for Free School Meals (FSM) for your child. All children will need a packed lunch on educational visits and if your child is entitled to FSM Children having free school meals can have a packed lunch from school. All children usually stay for school dinner or bring their own packed lunch. Those children bringing a packed lunch may bring a drink but it must be contained in an unbreakable screw topped container. Cooled drinking water is available at the school throughout the day. Children may take water into the classroom to drink throughout the day but they must provide their own leak proof plastic bottle with their name clearly visible on it.

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 13 Healthy Schools Initiative

Blaenhonddan Primary is a designated healthy school. Like plants people wilt. We recognise that low fluid intake can lead to reduced academic performance through poor concentration and lethargy, reduced physical performance and health problems. All children and staff have free access to water throughout the day. Children will need to bring their own plastic drinks bottle which they will take into class.

Children are only allowed to bring fruit to school to eat during play times.

Care

The Headteacher has overall responsibility for running the school with your child's care and safety in mind. However the day to day care and safety of your child lies with the class teacher and support staff. At break time teachers and support assistants are on duty. During the lunch break supervisors are employed to look after the children. If a school activity is arranged outside the school day a teacher will be in charge. On occasions, teachers will request the assistance of other adult helpers e.g. parents, friends of the school, students. This frequently happens on Educational Visits. There is always a teacher in overall charge on these occasions.

Accidents and Illness

Minor accidents and illness are treated in school. There are trained first aiders amongst the teaching and support staff. If your child is more seriously hurt or ill, we will contact you to collect him/her from school. Please make sure that we have an emergency contact number for that reason. In a medical emergency your child, accompanied by an adult, will be taken to hospital by ambulance. You will be contacted as soon as possible.

Medicines

There are two categories of children who may need prescribed medication.

1. Children with long term illnesses e.g. asthma. Arrangements will be made for their necessary treatment.

2. Children with short term illnesses. Usually a child who is ill enough to need medicine prescribed by a doctor should be at home being cared for a family member. Occasionally a child will be well enough to return to school before the course of treatment has been completed; in these cases the Headteacher &

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 14 staff can only administer medicine if a letter of consent has been received from the parent.

When your child is admitted to the school you will be invited to complete a detailed medical questionnaire on your child. This is merely a request and its completion is not compulsory. If your child has a potentially serious medical condition you will need to draw up a healthcare plan with the Headteacher.

Medical Examinations

Vision, hearing and dental inspections are carried out in school during the year. You will be informed in advance if any apply to your child.

Attendance

Attendance at school is compulsory. Parents are asked to notify school of a reason for absences as soon as possible. Please telephone or tell the class teacher. A note of explanation must cover all absences. Absence due to illness, medical appointments or other unavoidable reasons will be authorised by the Headteacher. An unauthorised absence will be recorded if we are not well informed. Application forms to request taking a child out of school for a holiday are available at the office, although these will be classed as unauthorised absences. All such absences are closely monitored and not advised.

Attendance is categorised as follows: - 98%-100% Excellent 92%-98% Good - Very Good 90%-92% Satisfactory 85%-90% Unsatisfactory 80%-85% Poor

Below 85% Education Welfare Officer may be informed and a home visit undertaken.

Please sign your child in or out of school in the book outside of the office. There is a late book that children will be signed into which is located near the office, lateness can disrupt a child’s ability to learn.

Attendance certificates are presented to those children who achieve 100% attendance each term. Medals, badges and certificates are awarded to those children who achieve 100% attendance throughout the school year. Holidays taken

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 15 during term time are strongly discouraged. Your child’s attendance will be given to you three times a year.

Punctuality

School begins at 8.50a.m. Being on time is a good habit; however, if the family oversleep please ensure your child comes to school. Likewise if your child has a medical appointment.

Nursery and Reception children are brought to the Nursery entrance by their parents and are met there by staff.

Year 1 – Year 6 children line up on the schoolyard where they will be collected and taken into school by school staff. For security reasons the external doors are locked after the children come in from lines. If you or your child arrives after the doors are locked please use the intercom to gain entry. Please sign the late book when bringing your child after 9.a.m. If you are taking your child out of school then you must complete the signing out record.

School Uniform

The children wear uniform. It consists of grey or black trousers or tracksuit bottoms, skirt or pinafore dress. Blue sweatshirt and blue jumper or cardigan or blue or white polo shirt. In hot weather the summer uniform is blue and white check dress or grey shorts with a white or blue polo shirt. School sweatshirts, fleeces, school baseball caps, woolly hats, book bags, ties, jumpers are on sale from Sportec, Tesco, Price and Buckland.

In cold weather a school tracksuit may be necessary for outdoor games. A swimming costume and towel will be necessary during the term the children go swimming. Long hair must be tied back during lessons and watches etc removed. Earrings must be removed and children will undertake gymnastics barefooted.

MOBILE PHONES: No mobile phones should be brought to school. If a child needs to contact parents, permission may be granted to use the telephone sited in the main office.

Communication

We try to keep all families informed about what is happening at school by :

• Weekly / fortnightly newsletters • Web Site. • Text to parents via mobile phones. • Class topics information sheet • Notices on notice boards

• Parental consultations held in the Autumn and Spring/early Summer Term • School reports sent home in the Summer Term • Welcome and information meetings/coffee mornings • "The Open Door" - if you have a minor query or wish to pass on a message to the teacher, pop into school at 3.20p.m. • Questionnaires to evaluate your perception of this school are issued and collated as part of the school’s self-evaluation process (every 2 years)

Blaenhonddan Primary Page 17 School Council – “Y Llais”

We have an elected school council that meet every two weeks. They discuss many issues, liaise with their peers, meet with guests, make financial decisions and look to improve the running of the school to benefit all.

Safeguarding and Child Protection

The Safeguarding officers in school are Mrs. Gayle Major and Mrs Rees-Jones. We take this matter very seriously and all cases will be dealt with discretion and efficiency. Please discuss any concerns with any member of staff.

Working Together

Children, teachers and parents of Blaenhonddan Primary School must work together to ensure all the children get a good start. We want the children to be happy, healthy and safe. We have fun as we teach and learn together. Come and join us!
