Much will centre round four days of free barbecues All this work will come to fruition on Carnival Day as the residents of Otley and many with music and drama in the Wharfemeadow Park visitors assemble to enjoy what is widely recognised as the best free show in town – encouraging friendship and fun. The Barbecues will remember that the Parade is free and there is NO entry charge to the Carnival Field – all run 12 midday till 2 each day and all will be we ask of those who attend is that you raid your piggy banks, turn out your pockets and welcome. Each morning collecting tins!! there will be sports activities on offer just beyond the skate park and on the Weston Drive Fields four ‘Childrens’ Funs Days’ are planned for Primary age children.

The French Summer Connection comes out of a twinning relationship between Leeds and France. Two summers ago 33 young people from 18 different Leeds church groups went across to Lille and took part in a similar project. Serving traditional French Saucisse and Merguez over two thousand people enjoyed a free meal in the atmosphere of Anglo French friendship and music. “It was brilliant to make French friends and experience their culture but better still as teenagers to work together on a project which was appreciated by everyone. It really gave meaning to our friendships and I can hardly wait for this summer to do something similar here in Otley.” said one of the team. As the day approaches the members of the Carnival Committee can all be seen with their “to-do” lists and once everything on them has been ticked then we can boast that we are The French team arrive on Saturday the 22nd July ready. That only leaves three worries: and leave on Monday 31st July. They will take a day to visit York but most of their time will be spent in 1. Will the weather be fine? 3. And, finally, will we make enough money to give donations to our beneficiaries when we have paid all our bills? This is very much dependant on the amount that OTLEY SWIMMING CLUB we can collect in town during the Parade – we worked out that last year we This long established swimming club, first formed in collected an average of only 8p for each person watching the Parade – it’s not 1903 and swimming in the River Wharfe, now much is it? Otley Over 55’s Exercise Group After a request from our members to extend our activities to social outings as well, we kicked off the New Year in traditional fashion, by a visit to the pantomime, in Ilkley. The party all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Our next event was to the cinema to see the film "Kinky Boots" What good fun that was! We rounded off the morning by having lunch out, and as it was one of our member’s birthday, it was a very happy celebration. On Tuesday 21st February we had a "Mystery Tour". The day dawned grey and wet but by the time we had boarded the bus, the skies were clearing, and our spirits rose. As we progressed, the sun was shining on the snow- capped hills. Waterfalls rushed and sparkled down their rocky paths, and new born lambs stood unsteadily in the frosty fields. Shortly before arriving at our destination, several members of our party had guessed that we were going to Hawes. Our Secretary handing out maps and leaflets of places to visit confirmed this. As we returned to Otley, everyone agreed, it had been a very successful outing and much enjoyed by all. Our thanks go to Alison Cunningham, our Secretary, who spent so much time planning and organising the trip, even to the extent of doing a dummy run, on a cheerless and foggy day. To Ilkley Voluntary Services, for the hire of the bus, and to Laurelie Fox for her impeccable driving. At present we are working on other events, which members will be advised of in due course. Our exercise programme is designed to keep the whole body supple, maintain balance and keep the mind alert. A lot of the exercises can be done seated if required. The classes are every Tuesday 11.00am-12.30pm. in the Courtroom, Courthouse Street,Otley, telephone 01943 467466. The original membership closed the Club down in 1907 due to the pollution in the river but was reformed immediately by some of the members and has continued to this day. It was originally restricted to 35 members, all ‘business men’ in the town, and only ‘fly fishing’ was permitted. However circumstances changed and gradually the membership was allowed to increase and ‘coarse fishing permitted’ but it was not until around 1949 that fishing was allowed on a Sunday. Prior to that any organised matches had to be held on other waters and to help members the local bus and train timetables were printed in the membership books. The present membership stands at around 200 senior members plus many pensioners and disabled members together with a growing number of ‘Juniors’ ranging in age from 10 years to 17 years old. In recent times the Club managed to purchase the field at Knotford Nook, on the death of the owner, and one of our members designed and supervised the digging of a pond there. This has proved popular with lots of members, especially the older ones and there are three specially designed safe stands for disabled members plus safe places for all anglers with all being on properly flagged areas. VISITOR SURVEY We all know that the Chevin Forest Park is a very popular place for visitors and that many different types of activities take place there. Leeds City Council carries out the management of all 180 hectares of The Chevin and believes it is important to make sure that visitors can continue to enjoy a range of activities in such a wonderful outdoor environment. To help ensure the expectations of visitors are met a Visitor Survey is being carried out to find out what is important to you and why you visit The Chevin. With the support of Leeds City Council, a local community group (the Chevin Eco-Centre Group) are proposing to build an Eco-Visitor Centre in the Chevin Forest Park. The location would be in a more easily accessible place than the previous visitor centre, which was located at The White House. If this proposal goes ahead the Eco-Visitor Centre will provide information, demonstrate environmentally-friendly living, and will improve the facilities for visitors to The Chevin. There is also a proposal to provide a Mountain Bike Track on the Danefield side of The Chevin away from other visitors. Despite the existing network of bridleways that bicycles can use there has been an increase in cyclists developing their own tracks through the woodland areas. This has had an impact on important features of The Chevin and on a number of occasions has led to confrontation with other visitors. The new track

is proposed to help reduce these conflicts. Leeds City Council are keen to hear everyone’s views on these proposals and have provided the
