AROUND THE GROUNDS

This round saw tributes to Phillip Hughes across the Shire with many teams showing their respect in various ways as you will see throughout the newsletter. The majority of our junior teams recorded wins with the Dragon’s now within 0.02 points of the lead in the SSJCA Club Championship. With one round to play before the Christmas Break all teams will be keen on finishing 2014 on a winning note. While 16A opener Jack Dwarshuis with 3 for 9 was the pick of the bowlers it was hard to go past Samuel Healey’s 50 not out from the 14D side as Intermediate P.O.R. The Junior P.O.R. went to joint winner’s Taj Kidd (12D-1) 44 & 2 for 20 and Lachlan Ritchie (10B) 27 not out & 2 for 4 with. All three boys were instrumental in their team’s strong wins.

Our two U/8 teams both remain at the top of their point’s table even though this age group are non competition. Both team coaches have done a tremendous job with their charges with all the player’s skill levels improving every time they take the field. This round’s star performers were Elijah Dundas 30 runs and Corey Turner 4 for 14. Our 10C side has now moved to a 35 over match format and went down the St Patricks by only 4 runs with Jackson Chalk scoring 25 as opener and Romeo Brown taking 2 for 5 off 3 overs.

Our senior sides are now well and truly into their series of one day matches, which will continue through to the start of February. This newsletter has the details for all the results and performances for round’s 6, 7 & 8 with the best performers Jonathon Mosley, Clinton Allen and Jarrod Mazurkiewicz selected as the Senior Players of the Rounds.

16A & 16B Tribute to Phillip Hughes

JUNIOR MATCH REPORTS – ROUND NO.6

8 BLUE TEAM

Well done to the players on a resounding win coming into the Christmas break, every one of the players contributed to the win.

Albeit a great game, it was played in good spirits but with heavy hearts.

Following the sad passing of Phillip Hughes, the melancholy duty of recognising the respectful occasion fell to our teams’ assistant coach and Engadine Cricket Club Secretary – Neil Crocker.

Neil’s address was poignant and relayed the thoughts and feelings experienced by those affected by the tragedy. Prior to our match, both teams paid due respect to the passing of Phillip Hughes marking the occasion appropriately. It was clear that all players and parents equally understood the importance of the occasion.

Both St Patricks and Engadine stood side by side, black arm bands respectfully displayed and; remained in silence to pay deepest respect to the late Phillip Hughes #408. 63 seconds of silence later, both teams were ready to play the time honoured game and this round, would play in the memory of Phillip Hughes and his family and loved ones.

The match... Both the St Patrick’s and our Captain Noah got together for the toss. Unfortunately we lost the toss after the St Pats captain rightly called “tails” (If you look closely, this was captured by the great photography of Corey’s mum - Nat Turner). I am not sure how to practice calling but I was always told “tails never fails”... or is it “tails always fails”?

Anyway, our openers this innings were Balin (19) and Luke D (7). They had the auspicious task of leading the charge with our batting following St Pats amassing 39 from their first two pairs.

Balin with gusto and, Luke with determination saw 26 added. With Balin bowling with pace and Luke D a short yet accurate stint, both contained St Pats well.

Lucas (24) and Koby (22) were next in at the close of day one. Complimenting each other’s batting; they were quick between the sneaking some much needed runs from quick singles.

Both struck the ball hard and got a total to put us well in front at the close of play day one. Both bowled conservatively finding the middle of the pitch more often than not.

Corey (27) and Bailey (10) had the task of following up week two with the bat and needed to get a good score to set up a total we could bowl at.

Corey was outstanding with a solid total. It was supported by Bailey at the other end with both showing several technically sound strokes. Remember to keep your heads down though!

Bailey and Corey were our most successful bowlers with 2-2 and 4-14 respectively. A Superior performance.

Putting our total out of reach of St Pats was the next batsmen’s responsibility. Ben (12) Noah (17) and Will (21) were equal to the St Pats bowling attack. All-together they made 50 between the them.

Of note was Noah. He had a remarkable spell of leg-spin bowling that was great to watch from on and off the pitch. Accuracy, Fizz and with all the mastery of Warne, Noah excelled. When the coach said “You’re bowling another over from the Ferntree end” Noah asked “why?” His coach replied “That was the finest over of leg spin bowling I have seen since Warne...you’ve got talent!” Soon to be in the spinners’ guild I’m sure.

Ben showed signs of pizazz after he kept his front arm much higher 4th ball of his last over. Ben earned a well- deserved as a result. Will also snagged a scalp in a decent 4 over spell which was both cunning and mesmerizing to say the least.

Due credit goes to St Pats players, parents and coaching staff on a fine batting, bowling and fielding effort. Although it was not truly reflected in the final result as the score book would suggest, there are some fine bowlers and batsmen in the St Pats team that will be definitely recognised in years to come. The conduct of the team and supporters was also highly commendable.

To our lads, Well done on your conduct and the respect you showed to those sadly past and equally, those present.

Always remember that Cricket is a game that binds and forges lifelong friendships. It is a game that takes you through happiness and yet, sometimes sadness.

It is a game where your achievements are remembered long after you have left the pitch and spans across generations.

On this game alone, you have made your old coach (and I am sure your Mum’s and Dad’s) prouder than you may ever know.

Well done to Corey on man-of-the-match and to all the players that received special awards for individual performances and team contributions.

Well done lads...Until we take on the next battle... AJ Coach of the mighty EDCC U8-1’s

8 GREEN TEAM

The mini Dragons team returned to our home deck this round and celebrated another resounding victory, this time against the might of Como Jannali.

It was once again very pleasing to see a fine all round team performance with all 10 players contributing toward the great result of 3 for 127 defeating 6 for 69. It was fantastic to welcome back Kade after a long layoff through injury.

Our bowling attack was spear headed by Ryan. He demolished their opening pair who found his line and length almost unplayable, returning miserly figures of 1 for 5 which included a maiden. Consistency was the order of the day over the next few rotations as Zach, Fred and Elijah each snared a wicket for only 8 runs. Showing no ill effects from his broken arm, Kade grabbed the "pill" with gusto and charged in striking fear into his opponent in each of his 4 overs, very tidy conceding only 11 runs. In addition to their fabulous bowling display Aiden and Josh each showed strong arms from the boundary whipping it in over the bails. Dylan and Mitch came up against Como's strong batting pair and showed plenty of tenacity against some ferocious batting. Special mention to Kyle for this round who has clearly spent a lot of time at the park improving his bowling action and had the batsmen guessing with his pace and accuracy.

At the crease is where the Dragons starred this week. Each of our 5 batting pairs got into double figures and we conceded very few wickets. Fred and Kade got us off to a blistering start smashing 24 runs without loss at the top of the order. Kyle and Ryan strode to the wicket next and showed plenty of enthusiasm with loud purposeful calls yielding many extra runs. Aiden and Zach provided strength in the middle order, notching 23 runs combined to build on our lead. The next batting pair was a sight to behold and had the large crowd at EWPS on their feet. Elijah and Josh eclipsed our old batting pair record and plundered 53 runs between them. Each found the boundary, seemingly at will with Elijah blasting 7 in total. Mitch and Dylan showed no mercy to the demoralised Como bowlers at the end of the innings either, sharing in the runs with 14 and 13 respectively.

In a split point’s decision due to fine efforts from all players, Kyle came out on top as player of the match due to his improved bowling performance, nice contribution with the bat and renewed concentration in the field.

10B TEAM

After losing the toss we were sent in to bat. We lost 3 quick wickets before Baylie got his eye in and took control. Lachlan M gave good support allowing Baylie to reach 26 and retire. We finished the first innings on 4-77.

Once again our bowlers did a great job. Bianca took a wicket with her first ball of the day and topped of some good bowling with a caught & bowled. With 2 run outs from Phoenix and Lachlan R and a good catch from Lachlan R off the bowling of Thomas, we were 5-67 at stumps.

With a lead of just 10 runs, we needed quick wickets when the Seagulls resumed their batting innings. Once again the bowlers stepped up. Both Baylie and Lachlan M took quick wickets and Lachlan R took out the stumps twice in a row giving him the chance for a hatrick. Unfortunately it went down leg side, though he got his man a few balls later, taking a catch off some excellent bowling from Koby L, leaving them all out for 92.

Needing just 15 runs to win, the 2 Lachlan’s went in. Both played sensible cricket to reach the target and retire on maximum runs with plenty of time to spare. Kobey F entered the crease and hit 24. He was supported well by Koby L. Both Kobey and Koby batted to the end of play leaving us at 5-155.

Another comprehensive win and great performance from the team. Keep it up.

12A TEAM

What a great result against Gymea. It was close and we did it! We batted first with the high scorers being Brayden (43), Josh (20 not out) and Luke (18). All the boys contributed to the score of 132.

In the second week Gymea came in to bat with a score they thought they could run down but with our solid bowling and fielding we were able to bowl them all out for 125.

Wickets were taken by Luke (2), Lachlan M (2), Corey (2), Tyler (1) and Beau (1). There were 2 run outs by Tyler and Harrison. Catches were taken by Corey (3), Lachlan M (1) and Brayden (1).

After Gymea had beaten us in the first round convincingly by 94 runs we were ecstatic to win this time round.

Well done boys!!

12D-1 TEAM

Well to start, I would like to say that that in such a difficult situation the maturity and support from all the boys and parents, not only in my team, but also the other Engadine side, paying respects to the late Phil Hughes was outstanding.

On day one we batted first and with Taj trying to outdo his bro from last game we finished the day 4/125. Tight overs from our opening bowlers, Beau and Harrison allowed us to apply some pressure and finish the day about 40 in front only requiring 2 more wickets for victory.

Day 2 saw Zane take a wicket on the first ball but a gritty attitude from there batsmen delayed a first innings win. Kye managed to tidy up the last wicket for a comfortable win. We continued our innings to put us almost 100 in front.

We went for the outright and gave it a damn good shake bowling 25 overs for 6 wickets. Boys, remember outright victories are very rare.

Outstanding performances this week – T Kidd 44 & 1/4 & 2/20 L Wallace 27 K Robson 2/8 & 2/2 with 3 catches Z Kidd 3/12 & 0/2 with 3 catches

Once again thanks to Steve and the 12 d 2 for a great couple of days

Robbo

12D-2 TEAM

It is brilliant to be able to be coach of such a great bunch of lads. We enjoy our cricket more than any other team in the SSJCA I reckon! As we took on the other Engadine side this round, we found the going tough, especially with the bat where we need to continue to work on our defence in batting and to keep the ball down. Having said that, Lachlan and Laythen both batted well for their scores on the day.

In week two we managed to hold off the other Engadine side through some great bowling and fielding and tenacious batting. The highlight of the match without doubt was our catching with Nathan Trudgen, Nathan Allen, Laythen and Jake taking some screaming catches to help us take some important wickets, well done boys!

In this match we had some things which are tough to deal with including a golden duck and a diamond duck, which are tough to take at the best of times. But to our boy’s credit, no matter what the situation they played the game of cricket with spirit and honour, taking the loss on the chin and fronting up next time with a new resolve. Good on you boys. Steve and I are very proud of your efforts and attitudes.

One game to go in 2014 and then a break for a while. Let’s make the most of this game and finish this part of the season with a victory!

14D TEAM

A warm Saturday morning down at Scylla Bay Oval left the captain Dane with some big decisions to make after winning the toss. Dane opted to bat first which is always a safe decision to put runs on the board. Blake and Adam opened up with some nice shots setting the tone for the day. Aiden came in and batted the best I have seen until he was run out, although only scoring 9 runs Aiden showed some real improvement in his batting. Noah and Sam came together to form an awesome partnership which saw the ball being smacked all over the park. It was great to see how well they communicated; calling through quick singles and never once looked like being run out. It is something the other boys should really observe and pick up on because it a massive part of batting. Noah was eventually out for 31 and Sam was retired when he made his first ever 50. Well done Sammy mate you really didn’t look like getting out. The boys were able to bat the full 25 over’s scoring a total of 135. This is a massive improvement on previous weeks and it’s good to see the boys succeeding with the bat.

Defending the total of 135 was still not a given and needed the boys to bowl to the best of their ability to win the match. Normally when writing the match report there is a bowler that stands out you can show off their figures. Well boys absolutely everyone finished with amazing bowling figures and you all deserve a mention. Broady 0/8 off 3, Harrison 0/3 off 3, Jared 1/2 off 2, Dane 1/4 off 3, Sam 1/10 off 2, Noah 1/0 off 2, Josh 1/6 off 3, Adam 0/8 off 2, Blake 0/6 off 2 and Lachlan 0/6 off 3. These bowling efforts were supported with great fielding from everyone. Jarred had a go with the gloves and showed his toughness, playing on after being whacked in the collarbone trying to stop one of the balls.

Congratulations to the boys for a good team win and well done to man on the match Sam for his 50 runs not out.

Keep up the good work boys, you’re making Chris and I look like we know what we are doing.

16A TEAM

Sports batted first and got off to a strong start and at one stage were set to post a big score at 1 for 90. All the boys fought hard and with the introduction of our new spin twins Alex and Nick the tide started to change with Alex taking 2 for 22 off 12 overs and Nick 3 for 31 off his 12 overs. The re-introduction of Jack with 3 for 9 and Louis 1 for 12 saw Sports bowled out for 133. The catch of the match went to Luke with a full stretch effort.

Dragon’s reply got off to a wobbly start losing Harry in the first over. An aggressive partnership of 71 from Jarrod with 40 off 44 balls and Andrew 39 off 46 balls settled the ship with Dylan K 26, Luke 16 and Jack 32 taking the team past their target. Dragons finished on 9 for 210 with only 58 overs bowled.

This match took Jack’s career wicket count to 100 and Jarrod’s career runs past 2000. Congratulations to both boys.

16B-1 TEAM The boys came through with a close win today thanks to two heroes who put in pride in their batting at training and each week on match day. Rithik and Sean put on a 34 run 8th wicket partnership dealing with good bowling and spin at the end to see the team through and maintain first place in the competition. However this was after three quick wickets were lost in the middle order at the beginning of batting in day 2. A flurry of 14 runs from Dylan ensured a healthy lead.

The team total of 167 runs was set up with a great knock of 49 by Ben Gilbert and well supported by Julian at the top of the order. Julian was hitting everything in the middle of the bat until he mistimed a ball and chipped it to mid wicket. Our team bowled and fielded well and shared the wickets around. They managed the last overs where our opposition tried to hit everything hard to score as many runs as they could. Good mature bowling from Ben G, Fynn, Jacob, Sean and Julian was well supported by committed fielding. Max claimed another stumping dismissal with ultra quick thinking and reflexes of a well established St Pats batsman.

SENIOR MATCH REPORTS

B1 Report

8th round against Caringbah Inn we made a dismal 86 with Reggie making 23 and Daly top scoring in three years with 6.

We nearly got them as they got the runs 8 wickets down hitting the winning runs with a six off our pie bowler.

Man of the match was C Davis with 5 for 18 and he can collect his Match Ball from the Taren Point River.
