Local talent is featured; it will be a family-friendly event; refreshments will be served during an intermission halfway through the show. “I love to hear my songs by anyone else but me. My critical faculties go into suspension. I don't wonder 'Do I like it?' -I LOVE IT!!!” - Leonard Cohen (from the website http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com) Bono. Elton John. Billy Joel. Don Henley. Tori Amos. And of course, Jennifer Warnes, Judy Collins – yes, even Bob Dylan: luminaries of popular music worldwide perform Leonard Cohen’s songs. In fact, over a thousand versions of Leonard Cohen songs have been recorded, thousands more performed in concert, since Cohen’s recorded debut in 1968. (Song titles include “Suzanne,” “Famous Blue Raincoat,” “Hallelujah,” and “I’m Your Man.”) And so, we at small town concert series wondered: isn’t it time that we in Chester – including the CT valley and Shoreline towns – gave Cohen a tribute? Concert co-organizer Matthew Male answers a resounding YES! “Throughout my life, Leonard Cohen has been not just my favorite singer/songwriter, but he seems, in a weird way, to be the writer of my life soundtrack.” A fan from a tender age, Matthew’s been a faithful follower – as so many are – of this Montreal Canadian-cum- California Buddhist, the romantic and philosophical poet/novelist/songwriter/vocalist, Leonard Cohen. When Matthew met his wife, Lauren, he was ecstatic to find that she, too, is a big fan – and could, in fact, perform several of her favorite Cohen songs – as did her previous group, the Grammy-nominated Washington Squares. Thus, small town concert series knew that their first songwriter’s tribute had to be to THEIR man: Leonard Cohen! “The response has been tremendous – with musicians, with fans, with radio stations – we even have people from as far away as Toronto, Canada and New York City who are buying advance tickets.” Indeed, even performers from as far afield as Canada and New York City are participating: Dave “Rave” Des Roches (Canada/NYC), the Bedsit Poets, Marni Rice (NYC), Lauren Agnelli, formerly of the Washington Squares (Chester/NYC), and local musicians Ebin-Rose, the Moving Target Jazz Band, Jim Lampos, Lisa Rich, and others. Being an artistic “stretch” for small town concert series, even though the songs of Leonard Cohen may be more sophisticated than the usual stcs fare, and the suggested donation higher ($20 – checks payable to Friends of Chester Library), kids 14 & under are always admitted free of charge, and there will be special considerations for students and senior citizens. .

RAM DASS Ram Dass (born Richard Alpert, April 6, 1931) is an American contemporary spiritual teacher and the author of the seminal 1971 book ‘Be Here Now’. DR. ANDREW WEIL Dr. Andrew Weil is a physician, author, professor and one of the world’s preeminent media celebrities in the field of medicine and personal growth. He is a long-time advocate for both Western medicine and alternative therapies. Dr. Weil graduated from Harvard University where he was also an undergraduate reporter for the Harvard Crimson. His investigative journalism led to Leary & Alpert’s dismissal from Harvard and the unraveling of their University studies in the use of psychoactive drugs for medical research and treatments. HUSTON SMITH Smith’s book “The World’s Religions” has sold over two million copies and remains a popular introduction to comparative religion. Smith, through his friendship with Aldous Huxley, met Leary and Alpert and others at the Center for Personality Research at Harvard.     “Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)”—The Eagles (1976) Added to the Registry: 2016 Essay by Marc Eliot (guest post)* The Eagles In 1971, the arrival of The Eagles signaled a major shift in popular musical tastes in America. If Woodstock was the funeral for both the music and the culture of a decade of drugged out, hippie, free love and cultish idealism, the Seventies was the decade of blatant decadence, political cynicism, sexual distrust, and rampant narcissism. No band represented both the rejection of the Sixties and the celebration of the Seventies more than its crown princes, the Eagles. Songs like “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Witchy Woman,” “One of These Nights,” and “Already Gone,” filled with spirited playing, close harmonies and an overlay of the Eagles’ war between the sexes, comprise four of the ten selections included in the initial compilation of Eagles’ hit songs from their first four albums, “Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975).” Ironically, although the Eagles’ laid-back sound was bright and natural as Southern California sunshine, none of the original four members were Golden State natives (Don Henley, vocalist, lyricist, drummer, was from Texas, bred on bluegrass and country music; Glenn Frey, vocalist, lyricist, rhythm guitar, pianist, came from the streets of Detroit, influenced by the music of Motown and mentored by Bob Seger; Randy Meisner, on bass, was a veteran bar band night sider out of Nebraska; Bernie Leadon, guitar, mandolin, banjo, was a Minnesotan who loved and loved to play classic country).     Leonard Cohen`s Tower Of Song: A Grand Gala Of Excellence Without Compromise by Christof Graf A Memorial Tribute To Leonard Cohen Bell Centre, Montreal/ Canada, 6th November 2017 A concert review by Christof Graf Photos by: Christof Graf “The Leonard Cohen Memorial Tribute ‘began in a grand fashion,” wrote the MONTREAL GAZETTE. “One Year After His Death, the Legendary Singer-Songwriter is Remembered, Spectacularly, in Montral,” headlined the US-Edition of NEWSWEEK. The media spoke of a “Star-studded Montreal memorial concert which celebrated life and work of Leonard Cohen.” –“Cohen fans sing, shout Halleluja in tribute to poet, songwriter Leonard,” was the title chosen by THE STAR. The NATIONAL POST said: “Sting and other stars shine in fast-paced, touching Leonard Cohen tribute in Montreal.” Everyone present shared this opinion. It was a moving and fascinating event of the highest quality. The first visitors had already begun their pilgrimage to the Hockey Arena of the Bell Centre at noon. The organizers reported around 20.000 visitors in the evening. Some media outlets estimated 16.000, others 22.000. Many visitors came dressed in dark suits and fedora hats, an homage to Cohen’s “work attire.” Cohen last sported his signature wardrobe during his over three hour long concerts from 2008 to 2013. How many visitors were really there was irrelevant; the Bell Centre was filled to the rim. The “Tower Of Song- A Memorial Tribute To Leonard Cohen” was sold out. Expectations were high as fans of the Canadian Singer/Songwriter pilgrimmed from all over the world to Montreal to pay tribute to their deceased idol.

Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. First Dance, F/D Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have time to locate sheet music and audio of the song(s). In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. Clients are not obligated to submit a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and/or avoided. If you desire the highest degree of control (asking the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we would ask for a minimum 80 requests from the band’s songlist.
