All-Time Series: Drexel leads, 6-3. The series dates back to January 7, 1983, the Dragons’ first season of Division I play. Head coach • Denise Dillon Villanova ‘96 • 12th Season • Career Record: 195-152 Entering her 12th season as the head coach of Drexel’s women’s basketball team, Denise Dillon has elevated the program to uncharted The Dillon heights. Now the winningest head coach in program history, Dillon led the Dragons to five consecutive postseason appearances from 2009-13. File Dillon brought the Dragons their first CAA Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in the 2008-09 season, earning her second Career Highlights conference Coach of the Year honor that year. She followed that with 2009 CAA Coach of the Year four straight WNIT appearances, and in 2013, led the Dragons to the 2005 CAA Co-Coach of the title with a 46-43 win over Utah on the Dragons’ home court. Year Last season, the Dragons won 15 games, the tenth time Dillon’s 2009 CAA Championship Dragons reached that milestone. They snapped a seven-game skid 2009 NCAA Tournament against Delaware with a 61-52 win in Newark, avenging losses in the 2013 WNIT Championship previous two CAA title games. They also captured the St. John’s Chart- 2010-13 Postseason WNIT wells Holiday Classic with victories over St. John’s and Prairie View. Most wins at Drexel Since coming to University City and taking over as head coach in 2003, Dillon has inspired greatness in her players and forged a new standard for success for the program. Dillon became the first coach in Drexel women’s basketball history to lead the team with six-consecutive winning seasons when the Coaching Experience Dragons won a school-record 28 games on its way to a 28-10 record and the WNIT title in 2012-13. The Drexel University 2004-pres. Dragons finished third in the CAA, reaching their third-ever and second-straight CAA title game before Head Coach earning a bid to the WNIT. Drexel beat Iona, Harvard, Bowling Green, Auburn, Florida and Utah on its way to the title. Drexel had never defeated an SEC or Pac-12 team until the 2013 WNIT. Drexel University 2003-04 The first break-through season for Dillon and her Dragons came in 2008-09. Led by a core of veteran Interim Head Coach senior leaders and a talented junior in Gabriela Marginean, the Dragons played their way to the 2009 regular-season championship, a program record 24 wins and the top seed in the CAA Tournament. There, Drexel University 2001-03 Drexel did what many thought was impossible: knocking off 17-time defending champion Old Dominion Assistant Coach and ending the Lady Monarchs’ NCAA-best 50-game conference tournament winning streak. The Dragons went on to defeat James Madison on its home court to bring home the school’s first CAA title. Villanova University 1997- During her tenure Dillon has helped guide the careers of 12 All-Conference selections, three Dean 2001 Ehlers Leadership Award recipients, the program’s first AP All-American, the leading scoring in Philadel- Assistant Coach phia women’s basketball history and the first Drexel women’s player to be selected in the WNBA Draft. Dillon came to Drexel in 2001 as an assistant coach in charge of recruiting and player development. She helped the Dragons bring in Catherine Scanlon, a local product from Drexel Hill, who was one of the Dillon vs. 2014-15 first Dragons to go on to a professional playing career following graduation. Opponents In 2003, Director of Athletics Dr. Eric Zillmer tapped Dillon to become interim head coach of the Cornell 4-0 (W4) program and by the 2004-05 season she received full appointment as the head coach of Drexel women’s Princeton 0-6 (L6) basketball. That season she turned a 10-18 team into a 19-10 squad that earned its first opening-round Colgate 1-1 (L1) bye in the CAA Tournament. The Dragons advanced to the semifinals and came within a point of toppling Saint Joseph’s 4-5 (L3) perennial power Old Dominion, a feat that had never been accomplished in the conference tournament.
