Installing the AVIDinit Extension

AVIDinit provides several functions to ensure that the ATTO SiliconExpress board communicates correctly with the storage system. AVIDinit also allocates additional memory for the system software, reducing the possibility that the system will run out of memory and display performance problems. c Do not install AVIDinit and AVIDstartup on your system. Three versions of AVIDinit are provided. By default, the system installs AVIDinit_A. This is the correct init for AirPlay MP 3.9 if you are using an Advanced JPEG (Janus) board. Use the other inits for these conditions: ¥ Install AVIDinit_B if you are not using an Advanced JPEG board and not using removable magnetic drives. ¥ Install AVIDinit_C only if you are using removable magnetic drives.

Install the init by dragging the init icon from the Utilities folder on the Avid disk to the Extensions folder in the System folder. n Install only one version of init. Remove any inappropriate versions. You must restart your system to launch the init. However, you can defer the restart until you Þnish the installations and conÞguration.

Installing VScanner on Multichannel Systems

Multichannel AirPlay MP systems require VScanner. VScanner is installed in the Startup and Utilities folders on each Avid disk (that is, the internal hard disk drive that stores the system software for each channel).

If you are upgrading your software, you should install VScanner your- self; Avid installs VScanner on new systems. After VScanner is installed, it works in the background while AirPlay MP is operating, and generally does not require any additional operator input.

VScanner performs two main functions for each channel in the system. VScanner locks the shared disks if the SCSI-NETª preferences Þle indicates that the channel does not have write access to them. The Record channel is the only channel with write access, which it needs to upload newly recorded material to the shared library.

A Playback channel can only read the disks in the shared library, not write to them. However, the Playback channel cannot see the new material or download the media Þles for playback until VScanner has remounted the shared disks.

Set up each channelÕs access to the shared library of disks by using the n SCSI-NET preferences Þle, not VScanner. For information on conÞguring access, see the Avid Digital News Gathering System Hardware Guide.

Follow these steps to install and launch VScanner: 1. Drag the old version of VScanner from the Startup Items folder (located in the System folder) to the Trash. n Do not delete the SCSI-Net Preferences Þle. 2. Click the VScanner application in the Utilities folder on your Avid disk to highlight the application, then choose Make Alias from the File menu. The system makes an of the VScanner application.

Installation Procedures Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 19

3. Drag the VScanner alias to the Startup Items folder, located in your System Folder. 4. You must restart your system to launch the VScanner application. However, you can continue with the AirPlay MP installation pro- cedure and restart after you conÞguring the settings described in ÒConÞgurations and SettingsÓon page 23.

Checking the Installation

The AirPlay MP ConÞguration Checker checks for the required sup- porting Þles, control panels, and software each time you launch the software.

You can display all information about the conÞguration, or only the information about conÞguration tests that did not pass: ¥ To display all the information, activate the ConÞguration Check window and choose Full Listing from the Edit menu or press k-L. ¥ To display only logged problems, choose Brief Listing from the Edit menu or press k-K.

If INIT conßicts or hardware problems are found when the application is launching, a dialog box appears.

Take one of the following actions: ¥ Click Abort to stop the software from launching.

Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Installation Procedures 20 Release 3.9 Release Notes

¥ Click OK to launch AirPlay MP. The software will launch, but you might experience problems during operation. ¥ Click Save to save the conÞguration report.

Contact Customer Support if problems occur when you launch AirPlay MP.

AirPlay MP 3.9 Overview

This section describes new features, compatibility with other releases and products, and known, current problems and limitations.

Compatibility with Other Avid Products

AirPlay MP 3.9 is fully compatible with Avid NewsCutter 3.8.1.

AirPlay MP 3.9 is compatible with Media Composer 6.0 (using AVR 70 media). It is also compatible with Media Composer 6.5 (NuBus), and MCXpressª for Macintosh, Release 1.5.

AirPlay MP 3.9 Overview Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 29

AirPlay MP 3.9 can support AvidNet 1.0.4v2 or 2.1.9. These two releases of AvidNet are not compatible with each other; however, AvidNet 2.19 is compatible with AvidNet 2.2. Therefore, all Avid sys- tems on your network must run release 1.0.4 v2 exclusively or 2.1.9 and 2.2. Some Avid applications, such as Avid Media Composer¨ Release 6.5, require AvidNet 2.1.9 or 2.2.

Compatibility with ITU-R BT.601 (CCIR601) and SMPTE 125M

The Avid Broadcast Video Board (ABVB) complies with ITU-R BT.601 and SMPTE 125M in that it samples Y at 13.5 MHz and the U and V signals at 6.75 MHz. Further, video is quantized with black at digital 16, white at digital 235, footroom below black down to digital 1, and headroom above white to digital 254. All these parameters are as spec- iÞed in ITU-R BT.601 and SMPTE 125M.

To use NewsCutter in conjunction with AirPlay MP, you must adjust the AirPlay system to the operating standard so that digital 235 produces a 100-IRE output.

When arming is enabled, one of these conditions will cause the red arrow to move to a pause event based on the current time: ¥ You put AirPlay MP into Standby or Priority Standby mode. ¥ AirPlay MP starts with an open playlist.

You deÞne the arming window duration by specifying two values: ¥ The number of seconds prior to the start of an external or playable event ¥ The number of seconds after the start of the external or playable event

The sum of these values is the duration of the arming window.

6. Double-click Playlist Settings. The Playlist Settings window opens.

7. Select Enable playlist arming. You cannot select this option unless the User Interface Playtime Setting is Soft play time and date. 8. Select from the arming options: ¥ If you want the playlist to be armed at startup in the event of a normal or unexpected quit out of AirPlay MP, select Arm play- list at startup. The Arm Playlist at Startup option causes AirPlay MP to behave as follows: If AirPlay MP quits normally or unexpect- edly, AirPlay MP will automatically reopen the playlist that was running before the quit; the red arrow moves to the cur- rent arming window based on the current time. c There are two prerequisites for this option to execute properly: First, you must save the Project window after you open the playlist. If there is no save and if AirPlay MP does not quit properly, AirPlay MP cannot determine which playlist was open.

Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B AirPlay MP 3.9 Overview 34 Release 3.9 Release Notes

Second, the Macintosh shut down warning must be disabled. To disable the Macintosh shut down warning: 1. Go to the Desktop. 2. Choose Control Panels from the Apple menu. 3. Choose General Controls from the Control Panels. 4. Deselect the shut down warning Warn me if the computer was shut down improperly. ¥ Select Ignore play GPIs outside of window to cause AirPlay MP to ignore play GPIs that are received during a time outside the arming window, including when the playlist is stopped. ¥ Enter the duration, in seconds, for the before event start and after event start values. The sum of these values is the arming window duration. The default for each value is 10 seconds, creating a 20-second arming window. 9. DeÞne the duration of the arming window by entering the num- ber of seconds before and after the start of the event. 10. Click OK.

The example below shows where an arming window is calculated in a playlist. Event # Name Duration Start Time 1 A 00:30 09:00:00 2 Pause 01:00 09:00:30 09:01:00 Arming window start 3 B 00:30 09:01:30 09:01:50 Arming window end

In this example, the arming window is calculated around the start time of Event B. If the Before event start time is 30 seconds and the After event start time is 20 seconds, the arming window begins at 09:01:00 and ends at 09:01:50.

AirPlay MP 3.9 Overview Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 35

These rules cover special calculation cases: ¥ If the arming window start time precedes the pause start time, the arming window start time changes to coincide with the pause start time. ¥ If the arming window end time is later than the start of the next pause event or the end of the rundown (not in LOOP mode), the arming window end time is adjusted to the latest possible value within these conditions. ¥ If a playlist is in LOOP mode, the date in the playlist is not used to determine the location of the arming window. If LOOP mode is on, it is assumed that the playlist has an overall duration of 24 hours.

The following example shows how these rules apply when the Before event start duration is 20 seconds and the After event start duration is 30 seconds.

Event # Name Duration Start Time Arming Window 1 A 00:30 09:00:00 2 Pause 01:00 09:00:30 3 B 00:30 09:01:30 09:01:10 - 09:02:00 4 C 00:30 09:02:00 5 Pause 00:30 09:02:30 6 E 00:10 09:03:00 09:02:40 - 09:03:101 7 Pause 00:10 09:03:10 8 F 00:10 09:03:20 09:03:10 - 09:03:302 9 Pause 01:00 09:03:30 10 G 01:00 09:04:30 09:04:10 - 09:05:00 11 H 00:30 09:05:30

1 The arming window end time is adjusted from 09:03:30 to 09:03:10 to align with the start of the subsequent pause. 2 The arming window start time is adjusted from 09:03:00 to 09:03:10 to align with the start of the preceding pause.

Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B AirPlay MP 3.9 Overview 36 Release 3.9 Release Notes

After you deÞne and enable playlist arming, the arming window becomes active if AirPlay MP is in Standby or Priority Standby mode and the red arrow reaches a pause.

If AirPlay MP receives an external ÒplayÓ GPI or if you click Play dur- ing the arming window, the subsequent playable events are played up to the next pause event, unless you intervene. Otherwise, the events are skipped up to the next pause event; a new arming window is cal- culated, and the red arrow jumps to it.

You can modify a playlist while an arming window is active: 1. Click the Stop button. 2. Make the modiÞcations. 3. Click the Standby button (NOT the Play button).

If download is turned on and the arming window is enabled, you c must option- click the Standby button to cue the playlist to the cor- rect time of day. If download is off, click only standby to cue the playlist to the correct position.

A cable wiring run list of the cables and their corresponding part number appears in ÒCable Wiring Run ListÓon page 83. These pages are placed at the end of the Release Notes to make it easy for you to tear them off.

Channel-Switching Between Record and Play

Some sites plan to use Channel 4 as a Play channel as well as a Record channel.

When you switch a channel between Record and Play, it takes time to reconÞgure the channel, record material, upload the material, and for the databases to recognize the material. Moreover, a channel that is devoted to playing may not have space on a local disk for recording.

This section explains two ways to provide disk space for recording.

Creating Disk Space for Recording

The easiest and most efÞcient way to create disk space for recording is to dedicate an entire disk for recording-only.

Supplemental Information Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 43

Another way is to clear a disk partition before you record.

Using a Dedicated Disk

You can dedicate a removable iS9 disk for Record-only. The Record Drive is mounted when the channel is conÞgured as a Record Chan- nel, and not mounted when the channel is conÞgured as a Play Chan- nel.

To use a dedicated drive for Record, starting as a Play channel: 1. ReconÞgure the channel as a Record Channel. 2. Quit AirPlay MP. 3. (Optional) Shut down the channel. You may use this opportunity to perform your daily system restart. 4. Install the Record Drive in an empty slot of the MediaDock. The spin-up light ßashes until the disk is ready to use. 5. If you shut down the channel, restart it. Three disk icons will appear on the desktop: RecordA, Record B, and RecordC. 6. If you did not perform the restart in step 5, use VScanner to mount the disk. Three disk icons will appear on the desktop: RecordA, Record B, and RecordC. 7. Launch AirPlay MP. 8. Record new media to RecordA, Record B, and RecordC only. 9. Upload the new media. 10. Wait for the database operations on the Record Channel to syn- chronize.

Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Supplemental Information 44 Release 3.9 Release Notes

Click the Info button in the Project window to display bar graphs showing the synchronication progress. When the bar graphs show 100%, the databases are synchronized. 11. ReconÞgure the channel to a Play Channel. 12. Quit AirPlay MP. 13. Quit VScanner. 14. Drag the three drive icons, RecordA, Record B, and RecordC, to the Trash. 15. Remove the Record Drive from the MediaDock. 16. Launch VScanner. 17. Launch AirPlay MP.

Clearing a Disk Partition

When you clear a disk partition for recording, it is important not to delete media that is scheduled to play soon.

To clear and use a disk partition, starting as a Play channel: 1. Designate a local drive partition as the Record buffer. 2. Print the next playlist that will run when the channel becomes a Play Channel. n Printing a large playlist can take as long as 1/2 to 1 hour. 3. When it is time to switch from Play to Record, sort the bins by the Disk heading (this is the local buffer disk, NOT the Shared Library). 4. Select the media Þles to delete. You want to delete media Þles only from clips that list the disk that you designated. The printed playlist will help you decide which media Þles are safest to delete. 5. Delete the selected media from the bin(s). Choose Clear from the Edit menu, or press the Delete key on the keyboard.

Supplemental Information Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 45

In the popup window, select Delete n associated media Þle(s) and deselect Delete from all bins on all channels. If the bin displays the Ofßine heading, you will see the media go ofßine. 6. Choose Relink from the Bin menu to relink the selected media to the Shared Library. (If the items are no longer selected, you can choose Select All from the File menu.) Select All Available Disks as from the Volume pulldown menu. 7. ReconÞgure the channel from Play to Record. Deselect Upload Media to Shared Disks. 8. If they are locked, unlock the Shared Libraries. See ÒShared Media Files: Locking and UnlockingÓon page 48. c Only one channel may have unlocked Shared Libraries. 9. Record the new media to the designated partition only. 10. Select Upload Media to Shared Disks. Be sure Delete Media After Upload is selected in Multichannel Settings. 11. Upload the new media to the Shared Library. 12. Wait for the database operations to synchronize. Click the Info button in the Project window to display bar graphs showing the synchronication progress. When the bar graphs show 100%, the databases are synchronized. 13. ReconÞgure the channel from Record to Play. It is not necessary to relock the Shared Libraries. 14. Open the playlist and begin downloading.

Router Table Configuration

Before you make changes to the router table, be sure to close all playlists. Open playlists will be updated to reßect the router table changes. This can be time consuming.

Shared Media Files: Locking and Unlocking

By default, all shared libraries (media drives) are locked, meaning that a channel cannot write to them. On a Play channel, you generally leave the shared libraries locked. However, on a Record channel, you must unlock shared libraries before you can upload to them.

To lock or unlock a channelÕs shared libraries: 1. Open the channelÕs System Folder. 2. Select Preferences, then SCSI-NETª Preferences. The Þle opens, displaying a list of shared libraries that looks simi- lar to this sample:

Shared Library 01 L 0

Shared Library 02 L 0

Shared Library 03 U 0

In this example, the Þrst two shared libraries are locked, and the third one is unlocked. 3. To lock a library, replace the U with an L. To unlock a library, replace the L with a U. Backspace over the old letter and type in the preferred letter.

n The L and the U are case-sensitive; they must be capital letters.

User Interface Settings

The default for Playtime Settings in the User Interface Settings is Soft play time and date.

Using a MediaDock for Shared Libraries

The AirPlay¥Database removes the clips for media it cannot see. Therefore, running with a faulty drive will eventually corrupt the database.

If you are using a MediaDock as central storage for shared libraries and you suspect that one of the disks is having problems, follow these steps: 1. Run Norton Disk Doctor, as described in ÒWeekly Maintenance ProceduresÓon page 71. It may be a sufÞcient remedy if Norton Disk Doctor Þnds and Þxes a problem. 2. If Norton Disk Doctor does not Þnd and Þx a problem, or the prob- lems persist, try to consolidate the media onto a good disk. a. Select the clips you want to save. b. Choose Consolidate from the Bin menu. c. Select the appropriate options and name the Target Disk. d. Click OK. 3. Follow the instructions for ÒSwitching Media Disks SafelyÓ in Chapter 11 of the Avid AirPlay MP UserÕs Guide.

If you were not able to consolidate the media, rerecord and reupload the media to the new disk.

Viewing an Event in a Playlist

To preview an event in a playlist without playing it on the air, double click the event icon. This produces a pop-up monitor. c Do not preview an event on a playlist by playing it.

Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9

AirPlay MP Application ✘ The AirPlay MP application and supporting Þles should not be stored on a disk partition that also contains media Þles. AirPlay MP does not recognize media stored on the same partition as the application. The AirPlay MP application should be stored on the internal Avid drive; media Þles cannot be stored on the internal drive.

As Run Logs ✘ As Run logs are saved on a per-channel basis. They are not centrally located on the control channel.

✘ As Run logs do not automatically upload to a trafÞc and billing sys- tem. AirPlay MP 3.9 does not support line-by-line uploading or print- ing. You can, however, print the entire As Run log from AirPlay MP.

Audio Marks ✘ If you set marks in a clip in NewsCutter¨, the marks are saved when you transfer the clip to AirPlay MP. NewsCutter enables you to set separate IN and OUT points for your video and audio, but AirPlay MP ignores the pink audio marks. NewsCutter also enables you to set memory markers called locators. The red locator marks are also ignored by AirPlay MP.

Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9 Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 51

Audio Scrubbing ✘ If you scrub audio and video very quickly, you might not hear the audio.

Workaround: Slow down the scrubbing when you monitor the audio.

Backup ✘ Avid does not recommend using digital linear tapes (DLTs) for back- ing up AirPlay MP systems. The backup rate to these units is 16 min- utes per gigabyte.

Bins ✘ Do not name bins AP Ofßine bin. AirPlay MP creates a bin with this name to store templates. If you create an AP Ofßine bin, it could replace the original. ✘ When you select a frame in Frame view, then move the clip to another bin, the frame reverts to the Þrst frame of the clip.

✘ When you move clips from one bin to another on the control channel, the move does not occur on any other channel. You have to move the clip on each channel. ✘ Occasionally, no clips appear in a bin. If you select a different view of the same bin, clips are visible.

Workaround: If a bin appears to contain no clips, select another bin view to double-check.

Clips Not Created ✘ When Record Tool Fields in Record Settings is set to ID# and Internal Timecode generator is selected in the Record Tool, clips may not be cre-

Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9 52 Release 3.9 Release Notes

ated if you change from non-drop-frame to drop-frame format and record to the same tape ID.

Workaround: Do not mix drop-frame and non-drop-frame formats using the same tape ID.

Clips Without Tape ID ✘ If you create and archive a clip without a tape ID and restore the archive with Restore ofßine media only selected, the clip is restored even if it is online. Without a tape ID, AirPlay MP cannot recognize that the clips are related.

Consolidating Subclips ✘ When you consolidate subclips using the Delete Originals option, the media Þles for the source master clips are deleted.

Deck Control ✘ If your system has a very slow-cueing deck connected with a V-LAN VLXi, recording can generate a timeout error before the deck starts.

Workaround: Increase the timeout delay with a Console command, as follows: a. Open the Console window. b. Type vlanSetCueTime x, where x indicates the duration of the delay. An appropriate number is 30 seconds. c. Press Return. This setting lasts until you quit the AirPlay MP application; you have to reset the delay each time AirPlay MP is launched. The only known problem is the PAL EVO-9850. ✘ With a V-LAN VLXi, when a clip or external event crosses the time- code 00;00;00;00, the tape prerolls with an ÒIllegal duration from trans-

Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9 Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 53

portÓ error. For example, this would occur with the range 23;59;45;00 to 00;00;15;00. The tape does not roll.

Workaround: If your site controls a deck for recording into AirPlay MP, control the event with Serial Deck instead of V-LAN. Serial Deck control is the only way to cross over the 00;00;00;00 time- code address; a site controlling a deck for external events cannot cross the 00;00;00;00 address.

Deck Disconnected ✘ Recording when a deck is disconnected displays an ÒSIO TimeoutÓ error.

Workaround: Connect the deck properly before you begin to record, or turn off the serial port setting as a deck.

Delete ✘ When you delete sources Ñ for example, the icon for a tape Ñ the sources reappear in the bin if they are referenced by master clips or stories. ✘ If you delete clips with video and A1 from the Media Tool, the Delete dialog box highlights Delete n Audio File(s) but not Delete n Video File(s). Both check boxes should be available.

Do not use the Finder to delete single items from the Media Files c folder; use the Finder only to delete everything in the folder. In gen- eral, you should use the Media Tool to manage Þles in the Media Files Folder. ✘ If you delete downloaded local media, you must manually relink the clip to the shared libraries. Use the Relink command in the Bin menu.

Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9 54 Release 3.9 Release Notes

✘ Local media Þles on the Play channels are not deleted if you delete media Þles only from the Record channel, without deleting the master clip. Only the media Þles on the shared drives are deleted.

Failure to take the precautions listed in the workaround below c could result in playing improper media on - air.

Workaround: Delete the master clip as well as the media Þles. If you must batch record from the same clip: ¥ Delete the media from the Record channel. ¥ Be sure to delete the media from the Play channels. ¥ Do not record new material into the same master clip. ¥ Do not log a new clip using the same tape name.

Digital Recording ✘ Clicking the 1-Frame Forward and 1-Frame Backward buttons in the Record Tool occasionally causes the system to hang. This problem occurs only with certain decks (for example, the BVW 70). ✘ The Deck status indicator is one action behind during batch record. For example, the deck status displays ÒprerollingÓ after the preroll is complete. ✘ If you record from a source tape without Audio 2 and enable the Audio 2 track selector in the Record Tool, Audio 2 creates popping noises in the clip.

The popping occurs under the following conditions: ¥ When you switch from a player to the Record Tool ¥ When you switch between players ¥ When you play in players ¥ When you close the Record Tool or a player

Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9 Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 55

Workaround: Do not record A2 unless A2 is on your source. ✘ When you are recording very complex video, ÒVideo Too ComplexÓ occasionally appears. This message appears when there are very com- plex regions in an otherwise simple background.

Workaround: Adjust the Setup and Gain levels in the Video Tool win- dow, or reduce the video level from the deck. If you still see the mes- sage, choose Reduced Chroma from the right-hand Video menu box in the Record Tool. ✘ If your system includes the real-time effects option, recording can abort due to an audio overrun or ÒVideo Too ComplexÓ error message.

Workaround: Restart the Macintosh to access the Advanced JPEG board.

Documentation

See ÒSupplemental InformationÓon page 39.

Duplicated Clips in Playlists ✘ You can create duplicate master clips in multichannel AirPlay MP, but they are not supported. Therefore, when a duplicate copy of a clip is used and purged from a playlist, the duplicate copy source in the shared library is not relinked.

Workaround: Relink the duplicate copy by hand.

Effects ✘ The Ofßine column in the Text view of a bin does not apply to motion effects and freeze frames.

Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9 56 Release 3.9 Release Notes

✘ AirPlay MP supports the real-time effects (dissolves and wipes) that are supported in NewsCutter. AirPlay MP does not support other effects that are supported in Media Composer. ✘ Media Composer 6.5 real-time effects with color borders play with black borders. Other real-time effects that are common between Media Composer and AirPlay MP will play as cuts. ✘ Real-time effects do not play reliably in Commercial mode.

External Events ✘ External events require a V-LAN VLXi. The system controls only the GVG 10 x 1 switcher for router switching. The tested conÞguration uses a GVG Performer series 10 by 1 router as the external switcher. External switcher control is not supported except through external events. For example, you cannot control a deck through a pause event. ✘ Copying and pasting external events is not supported in any form; you cannot copy an external event to a diskette and move it to another channel.

GPIs ✘ GPIs do not work on an external event.

Workaround: Put the GPI in the previous event.

Head Frames ✘ Head frames may occasionally display the message ÒBusy: PlayingÓ or ÒBusy: RecordingÓ instead of the actual head frame.

Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9 Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 57

Loop Mode ✘ You cannot play a playlist that contains only one event in Loop mode. The playlist plays the event once and then stops playback.

Workaround: Duplicate the event and place it in the playlist twice, or load one copy in the Standby Event window.

Master Clips Reappear ✘ A master clip that has been deleted may reappear in the AirPlay MP database bin.

Workaround: Delete the clip from all bins on all channels.

Modify ✘ If you use the Modify command to set the end timecode of a clip, the system adds an additional frame to the timecode. For example, if you set the end timecode for a clip to 11 frames, the timecode is actually set to 12 frames. ✘ If you use the Modify command to decrement timecode, you must enter a negative sign after the amount you want to decrement, not before. For example, enter 1:00:00:00- to decrement the timecode by one hour.

OMF ✘ AirPlay MP 3.9 does not support the import or export of OMF Þles.

Partition Limit ✘ The Macintosh system supports up to 70 partitions, not including one internal partition and one diskette partition. To make sure that you do

Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9 58 Release 3.9 Release Notes

not exceed this limit, plan for a maximum of 68 partitions (exclusive of the internal and diskette partitions).

Pause Events ✘ After a pause event, there is a delay of several seconds before you can play the next event. For example, if you enter a pause to play a very short event from an external source, AirPlay MP is not ready to play the event after the pause for several seconds.

Workaround: There are two workarounds: ¥ Insert a short-duration external event entry instead of a pause event. For example, where the desired pause is less than three sec- onds, use break-[1-second external event]-break instead of break- [pause]-break. ¥ To have manual control over the length of the pause, turn off the setting Switch on Pause Events, and add a zero-duration external event before the pause. Click Skip to play the next event.

Playback ✘ AirPlay MP performance may degrade when you play more than Þve events in any 15-second interval in the playlist. In general, AirPlay MP performance may degrade when events in the playlist are less than one second in duration.

Playlists ✘ If you double-click a clip in a playlist and the playlist is not the front window, the second click is not executed.

Workaround: Click once to activate the window, then double-click the clip. ✘ If you repeat an event in a playlist, changing the IN and OUT marks in the second occurrence affects the marks in the Þrst occurrence. For

Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9 Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 59

example, suppose the Þrst event in the playlist is Skyline. You set IN and OUT marks in Skyline. After adding several events to the playlist, you add Skyline again, setting different IN and OUT marks. The new marks replace the old marks in both occurrences of Skyline.

Workaround: Create a copy of the event and assign it a unique name before adding it to the playlist. To copy the event, select it in the bin and choose Duplicate from the Edit menu. ✘ If you delete playlists from the Project window on the control channel, they remain in the list on the Project window for the playback channel.

✘ Avid recommends that you limit modiÞcations to the Play channel while playing on the air. Do not make any major modiÞcations to the playlist while on the air. ✘ AirPlay MP cannot import playlists whose names contain more than 27 characters.

✘ This sequence of actions causes an unexpected result: Set the User Interface Playtime Setting to Hard play time, soft date. Insert an external event in a playlist. Add an old hard start to the event after the external event. Put the external event in standby, wait for the deck to cue, and press Play.

The event after the external event stays in standby and does not play. ✘ This sequence of actions causes an unexpected result: Set the User Interface Playtime Setting to Hard play time and date. Insert an exter- nal event in a playlist. To the event after the external event, add a hard start time that is already passed. Put the external event in standby. The User Interface ßashes back and forth between standby and play. ✘ This sequence of actions causes an unexpected result: Set the User Interface Playtime Setting to Hard play time ... Insert an external event in a playlist. Give the external event a hard start time. Put the external

Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9 60 Release 3.9 Release Notes

event in standby. It starts playing at the correct time, but it stops sev- eral seconds early and moves to the next event. ✘ When you create a playlist with the router enabled, it contains the channelÕs router attributes. If you import the playlist to another chan- nel, or transfer it on a diskette, the router table in the new channel will not match the router attributes of the original channel. The playlist will appear to play normally, but the router will not switch on AirPlay MP events.

Print File Import ✘ In an imported print Þle, in a text line that matches an Entry Line For- mat, text that follows a double quote (Ò) is dropped.

Printer Driver Additions ✘ Serious problems, such as AirPlay MP or system crash, occur if you try to print from within AirPlay MP when no printer is selected in the Chooser.

Workaround: Be sure to select a printer in the Chooser before you attempt to print. If you add a printer to the AirPlay MP system, be sure to install the correct driver and select it in the Chooser.

Priority Standby ✘ When Priority Standby is active and a Minimum Pause Duration to Remain in Standby is speciÞed, a deck event will not roll if its duration exceeds the speciÞed minimum.

Workaround: Deck events roll correctly when either of these condi- tions is true: ¥ Priority Standby is not active.

Known Bugs and Limitations in AirPlay MP 3.9 Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 61

¥ Priority Standby is active and Enter Priority Standby Based on Pause Duration is selected. (This is a different setting from Minimum Pause Duration to Remain in Standby.)

Real-Time Titles ✘ When it plays stories back-to-back that have real-time titles, AirPlay MP may not play correctly.

Workaround: To play back-to-back stories that have real-time titles, make sure Auto is off. The stories should then play correctly. If you need to have Auto on, you must render the titles Þrst.

Serial Port Settings ✘ If you choose serial deck control from one port, you cannot simulta- neously have V-LAN control on another port.

Workaround: Install a V-LAN deck controller.

Startup ✘ If AirPlay MP is in the startup folder on an Avid Media Processor sys- tem, using the (z) in the Þrst keyboard command (such as opening a playlist) causes Macsbug to start. This invocation of Macsbug does not indicate that the system is in an unstable state.

Workaround: Type G to continue without error.

Timecode ✘ In order for the external clock to jam the channel that contains the AirPlay¥Database application, a playlist (which may be empty) must be open on the channel, and the playlist window must be active.

Undo/Redo ✘ The Undo and Redo commands are not available with AirPlay MP.

Troubleshooting AirPlay MP

It is difÞcult for Avid Customer Support to correct a problem until they know whether a problem is speciÞc to your system, operational or functional, a hardware or software bug, or a complex combination of problems. Generating the appropriate report and sending it to Avid helps to solve complex problems and to identify software bugs. If your system experiences problems, such as freezing or crashing, it is critical to identify the source of the problem.

There are four types of problems for which you should generate a report: ¥ System freezes ¥ Fatal assertions ¥ Crashes to MacsBug ¥ Erratic system behavior

Troubleshooting AirPlay MP Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 63

System Freezes

When the system freezes, the Macintosh system and the AirPlay MP application suddenly stop responding to keyboard and mouse com- mands, and you cannot access the menus. At times, the system might seem to freeze, but is simply processing a command. Check the cursor. If it appears as a spinning wheel or as a watch, the system is process- ing a command.

If the system freezes, you can use the MacsBug debugger for a forced restart. If a system with a severe freeze cannot go to MacsBug, press the computerÕs Restart button. For information, see ÒCrashes to Macs- BugÓon page 65.

Follow these steps to use MacsBug to restart the Macintosh: 1. Record the steps leading to the error. 2. Press the k and Power On keys simultaneously. The MacsBug window appears. If the MacsBug window does not appear, press the Interrupt key on the front of the Macintosh. 3. Type avid, then press Return. Continue pressing Return until MacsBug Þnishes generating a report. The report is named mcdump and is written to the desktop.

Once you have generated a report, move or rename the mcdump Þle c to avoid overwriting the Þle when you generate another report.

4. Type rs, then press Return in the MacsBug window to restart the Macintosh.

All work done after the last save or automatic save is lost after a c freeze.

Fatal Assertions

Fatal assertion screens indicate that a serious error has occurred. These errors require you to restart the application. The text message gives speciÞc information about where the error occurred in the program code.

If you encounter a fatal assertion screen, do the following: 1. Record the steps leading to the error. 2. Click the appropriate option: ¥ Create Report generates a report with the error message and other . The report is saved in the AirPlay folder; the Þle name is the date and time the report gets generated. ¥ Exit To Finder quits AirPlay MP automatically and goes to the Finder level. ¥ Continue continues, usually generating a succession of error screens. You may be able to continue working, but it is better to restart the application.

If the system allows you to continue, immediately save your work c before performing any other functions.

3. After exiting AirPlay MP, choose Restart from the Special menu on the Macintosh main menu bar to restart the system.

All work done after the last auto-save or save is lost after a fatal c assertion.

Crashes to MacsBug

With one exception, a crash to the MacsBug debugger program is seri- ous. n For a description of the exception, see ÒStartupÓon page 61. In any other circumstance, you cannot continue running AirPlay MP, and often the Macintosh, after this type of error occurs.

The MacsBug screen displays information about the code Þles invoked prior to the crash.

Maintenance

This section contains suggestions for daily, weekly, and monthly main- tenance procedures for your system. For a thorough description of your system and its care, see the Avid Digital News Gathering System Hardware Guide.

These are general guidelines:

Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Maintenance 68 Release 3.9 Release Notes

¥ Follow the recommendations in the ConÞguration Check Report to ensure that the correct extensions, init Þles, and control panels are installed. As described in ÒChecking the InstallationÓon page 19, the ConÞguration Checker runs automatically once AirPlay MP is launched. ¥ Check the RAM available to AirPlay MP. The RAM assigned to the application determines how many Þles and windows you can open simultaneously. Refer to ÒConÞguring MemoryÓon page 24. ¥ Be sure that the system drive has at least 10 MB of free disk space. ¥ Inspect power, video, and audio cables for proper seating. ¥ Inspect all fans for proper cooling operation. ¥ Clean up the drives periodically to ensure that Þles are stored appropriately: - Be sure that media Þles are stored on media disks and not on the system drive. - Be sure that bins and projects are saved in the Avid Projects folder on the Avid drive. Mixing in a few small bin and project Þles with large media Þles causes disk fragmentation. Refer to the Avid Digital News Gathering System Hardware Guide. ¥ The Apple Menu Items folder in the System Folder should contain the following (all other items may be removed): - AirPlay application alias - Chooser (installed as part of Mac System Software 7.5.3) - Control Panels alias (installed as part of Mac System Software 7.5.3) - Find File (installed as part of Mac System Software 7.5.3) - AirPlay¥Database alias (multichannel systems only; Record channel only) - VScanner alias (multichannel systems only) ¥ The Startup Items folder in the System folder should contain the following:

Rebuilding the AirPlay¥Database (Multichannel Systems)

Avid recommends that you rebuild the AirPlay¥Database when the number of entries in the server database window grows to Þve or six times the number of spots in the system. A good maximum number is 15,000 entries. The time it takes to reach this number will depend on the number of deletions and the number of new spots you record each day.

To rebuild the database as quickly as possible, observe the following: ¥ If it is possible, do not use the server database channel for any- thing other than the build. If AirPlay MP is running, be sure the database is the foremost application in the application menu. ¥ If the server database resides on the Control channel, temporarily disconnect the Control channel from the Play channels.

Maintenance Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Release 3.9 Release Notes 77

¥ If the server database resides on the Record channel, do not use the Record channel for anything else (especially recording or deleting clips) while the database is rebuilding. Other uses will add to the rebuild time. ¥ Be sure a Play channel is not in priority standby while it is resyn- chronizing with the server database after the rebuild. Priority standby cuts off database activity to the channel. A Play channel may be in priority standby while another channel is resynchroniz- ing.

Follow these steps to rebuild the AirPlay¥Database: 1. Disconnect every channel from the server database. On each chan- nel: a. Highlight the Project window and select Settings. b. In the Multichannel Settings, deselect Connect to the Server. n Do not disconnect a channel from its local database. 2. On every channel, execute the console command RebuildLocalDa- tabase. Wait until the local database on the Record channel has been rebuilt before proceeding to step 3. Verify the completion on the Record channel as follows: a. Five minutes after issuing the RebuildLocalDatabase com- mand, execute the console command databaseinfo. b. Note the total number of master mobs. The number should be approximately the same as the total number of clips in the sys- tem. c. Wait another two or three minutes and execute again the con- sole command databaseinfo. d. Note the total number of master mobs. If the number is the same as it was in step b, the local database rebuild on the Record channel is complete. 3. On the Record channel. Click the AirPlay¥Database window to make it active.

Part 0130-01158-01 Rev. B Maintenance 78 Release 3.9 Release Notes

4. From the Administration menu, choose the Rebuild database com- mand.

Do not issue the Rebuild database command from a channel other than the n Record channel. Be sure the AirPlay¥Database is not connected to any of the channels when you issue the Rebuild database command.

5. After the two-minute countdown is complete, there should be no entries in the AirPlay¥Database window. On the Record channel, reconnect to the server database. a. Highlight the Project window, and select Settings. b. In the Multichannel Settings, select Connect to the Server. Monitor the rebuild progress from the Project Info window. Do not proceed until database activity stops. This allows the Record chan- nel and the server database to synchronize. 6. When the database rebuild is complete, reconnect the other chan- nels to the server database. a. Highlight the Project window and select Settings. b. In the Multichannel Settings, select Connect to the Server.

For maximum rebuild speed, reconnect the channels one at a time. Let each n one Þnish resynchronizing (indicated by the cessation of database activity) before you reconnect the next one.

7. When all channels are synchronized with the database, click Save All.
