Upper School Students Hockaday | St. Mark’s | Cistercian Junior Patrons’ Guild 2018-19 Cultural and Fine Arts Season

This year, Ed Long’s Junior Patrons’ Guild (JPG), will be marking its 38th season. As subscribers to Junior Patrons’ Guild, students will attend a variety of exciting cultural and fine arts events with Upper School students from The , St. Mark’s School of and Cistercian Preparatory School. JPG is the only formally organized co- ed social and cultural program involving these three schools, and it provides an opportunity for students to socialize while seeing some of the best performances various arts organizations have to offer.

The main events in the JPG subscription series are priced together as one package. The Guild Series includes transportation between Hockaday and the event, a meal, some social time, and a brief presentation regarding the performance. The Guild Series is offered at a reduced price based on group ticket rates. Financial aid is available.

The total package for the JPG Series of five events, meals, and transportation will be $320.

Sunday, October 7 (afternoon)- Dallas Theater Center presents Steel Magnolias at the Wyly Theater http://www.attpac.org/on-sale/2018/dallas-theater-centers-steel-magnolias

Set in Truvy’s hair salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, Robert Harling’s critically acclaimed play, Steel Magnolias, communicates the importance of family and the strength derived through the bond of friendship. Based on the writer’s true-life experiences and made into a successful movie in 1989, the moments of hilarity and tragedy make this production a highlight of the Dallas theater season.

Sunday, November 4 (afternoon)- Dallas Opera presents Carmen at the Winspear Opera House https://dallasopera.org/performance/carmen/ Don Jose’s heart is lost from the moment he meets the captivating gypsy, Carmen. Carmen, both beguiling and risky, plays on the hearts of men. This famous and popular opera blazes with the choices one makes for love, and the ill- fated consequences of jealousy and obsession. Bizet’s famous score has stood the test of time and the music will be recognizable to even the newest of opera attendees. Stéphanie d’Oustrac performs the title role and Dallas Opera Maestro, Emmanuel Villaume, conducts Bizet’s masterpiece.

Sunday, November 11 (afternoon)- A Bernstein Tribute with the Dallas Symphony Pops at the Meyerson https://www.mydso.com/1819season A musical bouquet from one the greatest composers of our time, A Bernstein Tribute offers listeners the opportunity to enter the world of Bernstein through some of his most famous compositions. The Dallas Symphony and Jeff Tyzik pay tribute to Bernstein’s legacy performing works from West Side Story, Candide, and On the Town.

Sunday, March 31 (afternoon)- Leslie Odom Jr. with the Dallas Symphony at the Meyerson https://www.mydso.com/1819season#pops Best known for his portrayal of Aaron Burr in Broadway’s original Hamilton cast, Leslie Odom Jr. joins the Dallas Symphony and Jeff Tyzik, Principal Pops conductor, for an evening of “Broadway, jazz and the standards we all love.” This Tony award-winning actor will dazzle the audience with his vast repertoire and Grammy Award winning voice.

Saturday, April 6 (evening)- Titas Dance presents Pilobolus at the Moody Performance Center http://www.attpac.org/on-sale/2019/pilobolus/ Founded in 1971 at Dartmouth College, Pilobolus has toured over sixty countries worldwide conveying their mission statement, “to expand and diversify audiences through projects of all types and scales in live performance, film, and digital media, characterized by the qualities of our namesake fungus- adventurous, adaptive, athletic, surprising and revealing of beauty in unexpected places.” This modern dance company has been featured at the Academy Awards, the Oprah Winfrey Show, and the Olympic Games.

The JPG registration period is open from Thursday, August 16 to Friday, September 7. The total cost for the JPG Series of five events, meals, and transportation will be $320.

Hockaday Parents: Please sign into the parent portal at Hockaday.org, select the JPG tile located on the Resource Board and follow the link to the online JPG registration form. After completing the online registration, you will select to charge your student’s school account as the payment option. Parents will receive an email to complete the online authorization form at the end of the registration period. It will be located on the Resource Board and is required for all JPG participants. St. Mark’s and Cistercian Parents: The link below will direct you to the online JPG registration form. After completing the online registration, select payment type as check and print the JPG parent authorization form. Registration is complete when both a check, payable to The Hockaday School, and a signed JPG parent authorization form are submitted to your school’s JPG Faculty member.

St. Mark’s students: Please deliver your JPG check and the authorization form in an envelope to either to Mrs. Strange in room H214, her faculty mailbox, or Ellen Jurgens in the Upper School office.

Cistercian students: Please leave your JPG check and the authorization form in an envelope for Mr. Saliga with Mrs. Nevitt at the front desk.

Communication for Events: A JPG Evite invitation will be sent to the student email address provided in the registration approximately seven to ten days prior to each event. The Evite will include all pertinent event information. Please encourage your student to reply promptly to the JPG student Evite. We will send a separate parent email with all JPG event information to the parent communication email address provided in the registration. We are unable to include parents in the JPG student Evite invitation.
