Who said the redcoats are coming the redcoats are coming? - Answers Beatlemania was addressed by several sitcoms in the early s. What's especially likable about the episode is that they don't make fun of the musicians themselves, but draw a lot of comedy from the mania around them. And for younger viewers who might think that the sheer hysteria of the teenaged girls depicted is an exaggeration, I can assure them as someone who was a boy then, it is NOT exaggerated in the least. A period piece that really doesn't seem dated because it gets everything right, capturing that moment perfectly. Looking for something to watch? The New Model Army The New Model Army ordinance of prescribed that the English Army was to be formed of 22, men, divided into 12 foot regiments of men each, one dragoon regiment of men, and the artillery, consisting of guns. The infantry regiments wore coats of Venetian red with white facings. Before the New Model Army Act each regiment had their own, often rather cobbled together, uniforms, with red, blue, green, brown whatever colour coat the colonel could rustle up. Sometimes it was a bit of paper in the hat band or on the helmet, sometimes a sprig of broom or other local plant, sometimes code words were agreed for troops to shout out at each other in case of confusion. The New Model Army standardised provision of equipment and supply to some extent, and this included uniforms. As it happened a decent amount of red dyed cloth was going cheap in London when the quartermasters in charge of military coats were looking for material so that is what they bought. After the restoration of the monarchy in it was continued — mainly because red dye was cheap. Even today on ceremonial duty many regiments still wear red coats. First publicly displayed in , the new uniform did not become universal issue until the following year for all of the regular army serving in Britain. The British Army had been using Khaki on and off for years before that. The conditions of warfare began to change in the 19th century with the introduction, in the s, of rifles, instead of the less accurate smooth bore muskets, and smokeless powder after The previous advantage of the visibility of Red coats through the smoke of war was eroded and with more accurate firearms the Red coats became sitting targets. The value of drab clothing was quickly recognised by the British Army, who introduced khaki drill for Indian and colonial warfare from the about midth century on. The Red Coats remained until the first Afghan War when lighter sand colour uniforms were worn. The British Army obviously stood out against the back drop of the desert sand, the thin red line so a change of colour was called for. Each regiment has its own uniform and dress code, but in battle, they all wear the same uniform. There was a joke at the time of the red coat … the British wore redcoats to hide blood… and the French Infantry wore brown trousers to hide…you get the picture. Also included in this exclusive presentation by and for Eyes Of A Generation, are the outside performance theaters and their conversion dates to NBC Television theaters. This compilation gives us the clearest and most concise guide yet to the production and technical operations of television’s early days and the network that pioneered so much of the new medium. As you will see, many shows were done as “remotes” in NBC radio studios with in-house mobile camera units, and predate the official conversion date which signifies the studio now has its own control room and stage lighting. Eyes Of A Generation, would like to offer a huge thanks to the many past and present NBC people that helped, but most especially to Frank Merklein (NBC 1947-1961) Joel Spector (NBC 1965-2001), Dennis Degan (NBC 2003 to present), historian David Schwartz (GSN) and Gady Reinhold (CBS 1966 to present), for their first hand knowledge, photos and help. In fact, this treatment for the gums, also originated by Dr. Forhan, was the starting point of his excellent dentifrice.

  • The History of CBS Hollywood Television Studios
1 The History of CBS Hollywood Television Studios By Bobby Ellerbee and Eyes Of A Generation.com Preface and Acknowledgement This is a unique look at the events that preceded the need for CBS television studios in Hollywood and, as in New York, the radio division is leading the way. This project is somewhat different than the prior reports on the New York studios of CBS and NBC, for two reasons. The first reason is that in that in those reports, television was brand new and being developed through the mechanical function to an electronic phenomenon. Most of that work occurred in and around their headquarters in New York. In this case, both CBS and NBC are at the mercy of geological and technological developments outside their own abilities…namely the Rocky Mountains and AT&T. The second reason has to do with the success of the network’s own stars. Their popularity on radio soon translated to public demand once “talking pictures” became possible. That led many New York based radio stars to Hollywood and, in a way, Mohammed had to come to the mountain. This story is told to the best of our abilities, as a great deal of the information on these facilities is now gone…like so many of the men and women who worked there. I’ve told this as concisely as possible, but some elements are dependent on the memories of those who were there many years ago, and from conclusions drawn from research. If you can add to this with facts or photos, please contact me as this is an ongoing project.

  • The Dick Van Dyke Show: Queer Meanings Quinn Miller
The Dick Van Dyke Show: Queer Meanings Quinn Miller From the original edition of How to Watch Television published in 2013 by New York University Press Edited by Ethan Thompson and Jason Mittell Accessed at nyupress.org/9781479898817 This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial- NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND). 12 The Dick Van Dyke Show Queer Meanings Quinn Miller Abstract: Te television sitcom is typically considered a conservative form that reaf- frms the status quo. In particular, network era sitcoms’ normative constructions of gender and sexuality are assumed to be antithetical to queer representation. In this examination of an episode of Te Dick Van Dyke Show informed by historiography, gender studies, and transgender criticism, Quinn Miller shows how textual and in- tertextual details in the fabric of postwar sitcoms create a type of queer representa- tion that difers from the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) characters TV producers commonly develop today. Like many narrative forms, television deploys a hierarchy of characters. In addi- tion to crafing main roles and a supporting cast, actors in minor appearances portray stock types. Comedy conventions allow secondary characters to deviate from norms in ways that main characters seldom do. With more minor parts, writers and actors have more freedom. As media scholar Patricia White has shown, such narrative conventions can produce queer meaning in popular texts.1 Te term “queer” describes energies that protest norms and trouble conventional ways of thinking. A queer approach to television texts exposes the simplifed understandings of gender and sexuality that make complex TV representa- tions seem to ft conventional notions of what “straight,” “gay,” “lesbian,” “bi,” or “trans” identity and behavior entail.

  • Sinatra's Comic”
Starrtext.qxd 8/7/02 9:16 AM Page 30 4 CHAPTER “Sinatra's Comic” t was now 1952 and Joey was wondering if he would ever be more than a pretender to the throne. He was earning a decent living Iworking the clubs, but there had to be more. He was beginning to develop a love-hate relationship with the lifestyle—loving the money he earned (he was now up to $1,000 a week) but hating the travel and loneliness that came with the territory. “There isn’t a lonelier life in the world,” he said later. “I was always a stranger in town.” Out in Hollywood, Frank Sinatra was in the midst of his spec- tacular comeback, filming From Here to Eternity. The onetime Bobby Soxer idol had seen his career nearly destroyed, first by losing his voice and then by leaving his wife for Hollywood sexpot Ava Gardner. Sinatra’s tempestuous relationship with Gardner had alien- ated his fans, and a string of forgettable movies hadn’t helped Sinatra’s cause. But his role as the doomed Maggio in From Here to Eternity would earn Sinatra an Oscar and single-handedly resuscitate his career. Just a year before he had been performing for half-empty crowds in Vegas and begging for TV work; now, he was selling out the Paramount. It was 1942 all over again. Sinatra was unstoppable. Joey had always admired Sinatra from afar. Who didn’t? Although they had never worked together on the same bill, Joey and Frank had played some of the same clubs through the years, sometimes missing each other by a matter of days or weeks.

  • 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' Opera | Arts and Music
ʻThe Dick Van Dyke Showʼ Opera By ADAM SCHWARTZ Posted January 17, 2011 Consider the sources of operas. There have been operas based on plays, novels, poems, original librettos, short stories, historical events, the Bible, myths, and goodness knows what else. Now, from a Harvard-trained composer and librettist who plays violin for the New York City Opera orchestra, comes whatʼs likely the first opera based on a TV situation comedy. This September saw the premiere of The Life and Love of Joe Coogan, a one-act chamber opera based on an episode of the same name from the 1960s sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show. The opera was given two performances at Lehigh University, where the composer Paul Salerni is a professor of music as well as the the NEH Distinguished Chair in the Humanities. The performances took place at the Zoellner Arts Center; Salerni conducted the Monocacy Chamber Orchestra. Twentieth Century Commedia DellʼArte The opera came into being when Salerni needed a companion piece for his one-act opera, Tony Carusoʼs Final Broadcast, which—with a libretto by poet Dana Gioia—won the 2007 National Opera Association Chamber Opera Competition. One evening Salerni and his wife, theater director Laura Johnson, were watching a DVD of The Dick Van Dyke Show, which he describes as his favorite TV series: “Iʼve probably seen every episode twenty times and know most of them by heart.” As they watched the show, Johnson told him, “Boy, you need to do something like this. This would be a great companion piece.” “She thought the nature of the episode itself and the showʼs wonderful comic writing would lend itself to an opera,” Salerni recalls, “and she was right.” Explains Johnson, “Thereʼs a wonderful tradition in opera of commedia-based pieces—comic opera, opera buffa—that works off of commedia dellʼarte.
