FOR THE RECORD

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT TRENT FRASER

“When Mark was really little my mom would come to the skate park or Mission Ridge snow park to pick us up but if he didn’t land his trick, he’d throw a tantrum and he would not leave” – Craig McMorris commenting on his younger brother’s stubbornness in a January 30, 2014 thestar.com interview.

Whether it is called stubbornness, perseverance or determination, the common thread is that these are some of the traits that make up the elite athletes that prosper on a world stage. Such was the case of -born Olympic bronze medalist Mark McMorris who was joined by eighteen other Saskatchewan athletes attending the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia. The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame (SSHF) proudly congratulates these strong role models and we look forward to seeing many of this group as inductees in the future.

The SSHF certainly had the Olympic Spirit and our featured exhibit entitled The Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (presented by McDougall Gauley) enjoyed an extended run based on its popularity. This well- received exhibit celebrated Saskatchewan’s 2014 Olympic and Paralympic participants against a backdrop of memorabilia dating back to 1924. Furthermore, visitors to the SSHF enjoyed studying donations from speed skating Olympian, Lucas Makowsky, to a snowboarding display from the aforementioned Mark McMorris. This hybrid display of the historical and the current drew significant numbers to the SSHF and we are happy to report that many of these visitors were skewed younger. We were pleased to note that our young visitors truly appreciated the significance of Saskatchewan athletes at the Winter Olympic and Paralympic games.

It has been a of the board of directors to skew our audience younger by creating displays that are interactive and dynamic. We took a very large step towards this goal in April thanks to the generosity of Jeff Stusek, CEO of Information Services Corporation (ISC) and Command Base Creative Design – both who donated to the installation of three interactive iPad/iPillar stations at the SSHF. With these new interactive stations, visitors will be able to explore Saskatchewan’s rich sporting history further than what our physical exhibit space currently allows. Concurrent with the unveiling of our interactive stations was the official launch of our revitalized website, which is now fully responsive to today’s different technologies. The website has been expanded to include some of the permanent collection (choose the “artifacts” link), as well as provide greater access to current featured events and exhibits.

Our volunteer board of directors has grown in the past year with the addition of three dynamic, young individuals who have quickly become strong members of our organization. We are pleased to welcome Laurel Garven and Justin Scott from Regina, as well as Rebecca Conly from Estevan. All three will join their fellow board members and attending members of the SSHF at our Annual General Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 28 at 7 p.m. via videoconference between Regina and .

Recently our entire board and staff met in Davidson for a full day strategy session on fundraising for the SSHF. We are committed to reaching the goals as outlined in our strategic document and in order to do so we recognize that we must improve our fundraising competency. The session was facilitated by former curler and Olympic Committee member Karen Purdy and the result is certainly a renewed focus on maximizing the properties and events of the SSHF.

There is much work ahead for the SSHF in 2014 beginning with our 2014 Induction weekend on June 13th and 14th. Please try to attend this flagship event for the Hall and meet in person our Class of 2014.

On behalf of the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors and staff, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a great spring and summer season. Please take the time to visit our new website www.sasksportshalloffame.com; our Facebook page at SaskSportsHF; or join us on Twitter @SaskSports HF. April 2014 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OFFICIAL NOTICE

WELCOMING OUR NEW CURATOR, BROCK GERRARD

For those of you who do not receive our weekly electronic news bulletin, What’s On, the SSHF is pleased to announce the arrival of our new Curator, Brock Gerrard, effective February 17. Brock joins us from Wallaceburg, ON where he has been the Curator/Manager of the Wallaceburg & District Museum for the past three years. Brock graduated from Trent University with a BA Honours in Classical History (2005) and then completed a post- graduate certificate for Museum Management and Curatorship from Sir Sandford Fleming College (2006). During the course of his studies and following graduation, Brock gained additional work experience with the Peel Heritage Complex, the Museum of Nepean, the Goulbourne Museum and the Dufferin County Museum and Archives. Brock has had to hit the ground running since arriving in Regina. His first day was spent at the very busy Ice & Fire Festival, and while managing a near vertical learning curve he has also been working on our two upcoming exhibits, Dedication to Sport and Sports in Shorts. Welcome to the team, Brock!

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SHEILA KELLY

Where has winter gone? It has been a blur of activity at the SSHF since Christmas. Much of what has been keeping us busy has been previously highlighted in Trent’s Message from the President. Suffice it to say that new exhibits, new staff and new programming have been keeping everyone running for the past few months.

Like many not-for-profit organizations, the SSHF has been horrified by the dramatic increase in postage rates announced, and now implemented, by Post. In an effort to minimize the impact on our operating budget, we are moving more of our day-to-day administrative and marketing activities to an electronic platform. Ironically, exactly what Canada Post is saying is the catalyst for their price hikes. We do, of course, require your support in this endeavor to make it work. If you currently receive your correspondence from the SSHF via the mail, and you have an email address that you would be willing to provide to us, please consider making the change. We appreciate that everyone gets far too many emails on any given day. In an effort to streamline our message we send one weekly “What’s On” email to those individuals in our database. Special event activities and programming opportunities that we believe warrant additional attention may be circulated via an additional email, but we do try and limit the amount of content that we are sending to your electronic mailbox. If this all sounds like an appropriate change for you, please send us your email address to [email protected]. A quick note to the effect that you would like to be converted to email correspondence will set the plan in motion. Thank you for considering this option. The end result is that more of our operating budget can be spent on programming rather than administration.

This newsletter outlines details specific to Induction Weekend 2014 and our Class of 2014. Please pay special attention to the dates and events being offered this year. The Induction Dinner & Ceremony will be hosted on Friday, June 13 at the Delta Regina beginning at 5:30 p.m. Each ticket purchased for the Induction Dinner will come with a value added ticket to the Redblacks versus Saskatchewan Roughriders football game on Saturday, June 14, courtesy of the Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club. We hope that you will make plans to join us in celebrating the many accomplishments of our newest inductees. This year (for the first time) tickets can be purchased online at www.sasksportshalloffame.com or by contacting our administrative office (306-780-9232) directly.

New exhibits are in the works for the summer season. In keeping with the priorities of our strategic plan to utilize our permanent collection and celebrate the achievements of our inductees, the upcoming exhibit will showcase our broadest category of inductee: Athletics. Sports in Shorts will provide our visitors with an expanded view of our inductees’ successes in a variety of events including: the sprint, marathon, hurdles, long jump, high jump, triple jump, broad jump, discus, javelin & shot put. Also in the works is Dedication to Sport: Our Newest Inductees. This exhibit will feature a montage of individual displays focusing on each inductee within the Class of 2014. Both exhibits will officially launch on the Victoria Day long weekend.

Summer hours will commence on Saturday, May 17 and continue through until Saturday, August 30. Our regular hours of operation during this time period will be Monday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Admin offices 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.) and Saturday Noon – 5:00 p.m.

THE NOMINATION PROCESS AT A GLANCE

Why isn’t (fill in any name here) in the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame? They should be! Visitors ask this question all the time. And yes, we may agree that the person or team in question has had many sports accomplishments. The answer is simple – someone needs to nominate them.

The nominator can be a friend, a relative or a diehard fan. If you believe that an athlete or a team has reached their highest level of competition, or that a person involved in sports has developed, built or contributed to a sport or sports benefiting others, then think about nominating them to the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.

We are not going to lie; the nomination process is a bit of work. But you might learn some new information about your nominee and even have some fun doing it. We believe the end result is worth it!

Here is a quick overview of what is involved:  Obtain a copy of the nomination package from our website (http://sasksportshalloffame.com/inductee- directory/nominate-an-inductee/) or at the SSHF.  Determine the best category for your nominee - athlete, builder or team.  Get approval from your nominee to proceed with the nomination process. For a team this is usually a coach, manager, president or owner.  Complete the forms as requested including the supporting documentation (letters, photos, etc.).  We want the details - provide the years played, statistics, competitions, championships, awards. We will not fill in the blanks for you.  Call or email if you have questions – we would rather you ask before you submit a nomination.  Submit the nomination to the SSHF by October 1st.

Then what happens?  The nomination will be reviewed for all the mandatory components by the Executive Director. If something is missing you will be contacted and given a deadline to provide the missing items.  After October 1st, the nominations with all required content are passed to the Inductee Selection Committee which is comprised of independent volunteers. Note that the staff at the SSHF is not involved in the inductee selection process.  The committee uses the information submitted in the nomination package. The number of nominations being reviewed can vary from 20 to 60 depending on the year.  The nominations are reviewed and scored by the committee members over the course of several weeks.  The Induction Selection Committee then meets to compile the results and provides a recommendation to the SSHF Board for review and approval. There are generally 8-10 inductees selected each year.  The successful inductee and nominator will be notified by the SSHF Board.

What if my nomination is not selected?  Nominations are held on file for three years. If your nomination was not successful this year, it could be successful during the next selection process. It is not a one-time process.  Notification will be sent for nominations which were not successful for the current year if additional information is required. If you do not receive any correspondence it means that your nomination is complete but it is in a very competitive pool of nominations.  If a nomination is reviewed over several years without success, the file will be retired. If this occurs, the nominator will be notified. Retired nominations can be re-submitted following a mandatory 1 year waiting period as long as the re-submission contains new information about the nominee in question.

When is the deadline for nominations?  The deadline for nominations to be received by the SSHF is October 1st annually.
