1. The Geographical position
The village is situated in the south-east department, Dolj, at 27 -30 km faraway from Craiova city, right on the national road toward Caracal city( in Olt department). The villages we meet on the main road until arriving at Castranova, but coming from Craiova, are: Cârcea, Coșoveni, Leu, Puțuri and Castranova (then Apele vii, Celaru, Amărăști at the frontiere with Olt department in the east part).To arrive at Castranova we go by mini-bus at each hour starting from 7,00 to 17,20. Castranova is a big village(commune), composed of two villages: Puțuri and Castranova. It 's an old Roman site, which remains we can see nowadays. Moreover the noun

The habitants are almost Romanians but also Gypsies. Their main occupation is for agriculture: growing vegetables or cereals, turkies and bees. Nowadays, due to the mini-bus and to the good time table, some people work in Craiova, too.

2.The history of the school.
Castranova school is one of the ancient schools in the country in Dolj department, being built before 1813 and representing an important element in the monographs of the village. That`s why the school played an important role in the progress of the village from the cultural point of view. The school was built by the General Cacalețeanu, near his house in order to lead it better, after his return from Russia. At Cacaleți, the old name of Castranova village (due to the name of the general), in 1865 a fire caused by the pupils, destroyed the school, so after a long period of lack of a school there was built in the village another school in 1874/1875. Those days the school started at 15th September and finished at 15th June as last year. But until 1884 the scholar year was split in semesters as in the present and after that date in trimesters as until 1997. At each end of the year, pupils of each class had to pass exams at all the subjects. The marks were from 0 to 10, 0 representing both the absence from school and the student`s interest in learning. In each of the schools there is functioning a kindergarten with more groups ( with 3-4 year children-the little group, 5-6 year -the intermediate group or the pre-scholar group). In the kindergarten of Castranova, there are almost 68 children and in that of Puturi – 72 children. Besides the kindergarten, each school contains a primary cycle, with pupils between 6/7 years and 10/11 years age. There are specific classes of study of each year of study: the 1st year, the 2nd year, the third and fourth one. However, at Castranova until last year there were two series of classes (A and B) starting from the 1st year. Nowadays, children `s number becomes smaller because of less births and so we have less pupils at school.The primary cycle is frequented by 93 pupils at Castranova and 70 pupils at Puturi.
