These teachers shared unique travel experiences that led them to their career choice. “My travels definitely influenced my career choice,” said Hartley. Hartley’s parent’s taught for the Department of Defense, so she traveled throughout the world when she was younger and even lived in Germany for two years as a child, she said. Her first visit to France was a memorable one. “My favorite trip abroad was the first time I visited Paris. I have learned more about culture from being engaged with people,” she said. Swinning has traveled to both Mexico and Spain, taking in some interesting experiences. His favorite trip was to Spain, where he visited world famous landmarks, including Park Guell, Templo de la Sagrada Familia, Valley of the Fallen, and Prado Museum. In Mexico, he said he tested fate. “Some twenty-somethings and I decided that it would be a good idea to cross a train bridge suspended 600 feet above a ravine. The bridge had no guard rails, and I kept seeing the scene from Stand By Me in my mind. Everything turned out just fine, though,” said Swinning. All three teachers highly recommend studying abroad to students who have the opportunity. “The education you get from other cultures around the world is priceless,” said Swinning. Regarding the Spanish and French four field trips to their respective countries, Hartley said, “Unfortunately, recent times have not been ideal for student travel. I would consider another trip to Europe, but only if I were convinced of strong student interest, an improved American economy with a stronger dollar and less volatile international relations.” While students may not see these trips available at this time, Swinning showed an interest, saying Swinning stayed with a host family “once my children (1 year old and unborn) have grown up some, I while studying in Spain. would consider taking students on field trips to Spain [and] Mexico again.” Hartley said about her travels, “I’ve learned the importance of Submitted being open to new ideas, cultures, and experiences. A quick walk down a busy hallway in the high school often reveals students’ personalities by just a quick glance at what they are wearing or how they may be acting around their peers. For many, this judgment is a deciding factor on whether or not they are willing to make conversation with others based on outside appearance. In today’s society, some judge others by what’s on the outside rather than what’s really important: who they are on the inside.
