More than 40 bridges link the islets together! You can appreciate the canal scenery from all angles. The 33-hectare (82-acre) ancient town is surrounded by five lakes - a water town in the true sense of the word. Recommended Tour: 4-Day Shanghai, Suzhou and Tongli Tour. 3. Wuzhen Water Town, one of the most famous ancient water towns in China, has a history of more than 1,000 years. Embraced by the Beijing– Hangzhou Grand Canal, canals crisscross the two town areas. Ancient residential houses, workshops and stores stand on the banks of the East Area canals, and attractions include folk performances. The West Area has been restored for antique-style accommodation, but authentic ancient elements are also easily found. Though some complain about its commercial atmosphere, restored buildings, and the crowds; Wuzhen's charm and elegance are undeniable. Recommended tour: Hangzhou & Its Neighbours - 7-Day Shanghai, Huangshan, Wuzhen and Hangzhou Tour. 5. Zhujiajiao Ancient Town - the busiest water town. Location: in Qingpu District, one hour from central Shanghai Recommended stay: half a day Activities: boating, walking, and photography Suitable for: travelers who have limited time Features: canals, bridges, and ancient buildings, very busy (especially at weekends) and very commercial. Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is a nice destination to contrast with high-rise modern Shanghai, only an hour from downtown Shanghai. It's quite large at 1.3 km 2 (half a square mile), and well endowed with waterways, 36 ancient bridges, and traditional Chinese-style residences. Dianshan Lake is a large natural lake popular for boating, only 3 km (2 miles) away. Well-developed for tourism, some of the ancient style and peace are erased by commercialization. 6. Qibao Ancient Town - closest to Shanghai, but smallest. Location: In the suburbs of Shanghai, half an hour from central Shanghai Recommended stay: half a day Activities: seeing ancient architecture and eating local snacks Suitable for: travelers who only have limited time Features: very small, only 2 canals, rather like a bazaar, very crowded at weekends. Qibao Ancient Town is a mini ancient town containing two pedestrian streets. There are shops selling various souvenirs along the streets, and various snacks sold on Qibao Old Street. Travelers can learn about the process of brewing Qibao's famous distilled liquor in Qibao Winery. Thousands of miniature engravings (made by a father and daughter of the Zhou family) are exhibited in Zhou Family Miniature Engravings . 7. Luzhi Ancient Town - virtually undiscovered. Location: close to Suzhou, 1½ hours from Shanghai Recommended stay: at least a day Suitable for: (Suzhou) travelers who particularly dislike crowds Features: a peaceful water town, canal rides with singing boat women, less-commercialized. Luzhi Ancient Town is much nearer to Suzhou (only about half an hour away) than Shanghai. Surrounded by five lakes, Luzhi is an elegant water town. There are 41 quaint ancient bridges, built in the Song (960–1279), Yuan (1271–1368), Ming, and Qing dynasties. So Luzhi Ancient Town is known as the “ Museum of Chinese bridges ”. There are many ancient residences built in the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties, not reconstructed as in some other ancient towns. It’s quite big at 1 km 2 (0.4 square miles) or about the size of 100 city blocks. The old maidenhair trees, with a history of more than one thousand years are another highlight in this ancient town. 8. Zhouzhuang Water Town - most popular and commercial.

  • Analysis of Character Convergence of Jiangnan Ancient Towns Lei Yunyao , Zhang Qiongfang
International Forum on Management, Education and Information Technology Application (IFMEITA 2016) Analysis of Character Convergence of Jiangnan Ancient Towns Lei Yunyao1, a, Zhang Qiongfang 1,b 1 Wuchang Shouyi University, Wuhan 430064 China [email protected], b [email protected] Key Words:Jiangnan Ancient Towns; Character convergence; Analysis Abstract:This article illustrates the representation of character convergence of Jiangnan Ancient Towns. It analyzes the formation mechanism of character convergence to build the whole image of these ancient towns with Zhouzhuang as a prototype. Based on Tourism Geography Theory and Regional Linkage Theory, it puts forward the fact that the character convergence can be beneficial to building a whole tourism image and to enhancing people’s awareness of ancient heritage. But some problems caused by the convergence will also be presented, such as the identical tourism development model, the backward infrastructure and the destruction of original ecology. Introduction With Taihu Lake as the center, the region of Jiangnan, the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, is scattered all over by many historic ancient towns. These towns have a long history and deep cultural deposit. They are densely occupied and economically developed. They form a national transport network combined with inland waterway. These towns have witnessed a long-term economic prosperity in the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and are now generally called “Jiangnan Ancient Towns”. Since 1980s, under the wave of reform, opening up and modernization construction, experience-based tourism and leisure tourism of these towns have achieved great development. Under the influence of “China's First Water Town” Zhouzhuang, some other similar towns like Tongli, Luzhi, Xitang, Nanxun, Wuzhen all choose to follow suit.

The Development of Copycat Towns in China: An Analysis of Their Economic, Social, and Environmental Implications Working Paper WP17DS1 Daniel Sui Ohio State University Bo Zhao Oregon State University Hui Kong Ohio State University October 2017 The findings and conclusions of this Working Paper reflect the views of the author(s) and have not been subject to a detailed review by the staff of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. Contact the Lincoln Institute with questions or requests for permission to reprint this paper. [email protected] © 2017 Lincoln Institute of Land Policy Abstract The great urban leap forward in China during the past four decades has dramatically transformed the Chinese landscape across the country as well as Chinese society in many profound ways. By situating the development of xenophilic copycat towns under the broader context of China’s four urban design and development motifs, this report presents an initial study of copycat/shanzhai towns in China through a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach. The qualitative data gathered through on-site interviews and observations reveal multiple unique and local circumstances for the development of these copycat towns while the quantitative analysis and mapping using big data analytics shed light for the first time on the national trend of this phenomena and its manifestations in the local real estate market. Furthermore, the way in which the development of copycat towns still follows the basic laws of supply and demand and market forces should be taken into full consideration. Most of the successful copycat towns covered in this report are either located near a large city, or have convenient transportation infrastructure that makes them accessible from nearby city centers.

  • Shanghai from Dense Mono-Center to Organic Poly-Center Urban Expansion1 Pan Haixiao Professor Department of Urban Planning, Tongji University Shanghai 200092, China
Shanghai from Dense Mono-center to Organic Poly-Center Urban Expansion1 Pan Haixiao Professor Department of Urban Planning, Tongji University Shanghai 200092, China Abstract: Shanghai is one of the largest prosperous cities in China with the population over 17million. From the 1940’s the major urban planning strategy is trying to de-centralize the overcrowded population in the central part of the city, where the density was even as high as 70000 people/sq.km, now decreased to 40000 people/sq.km. The still very high dense city contributes relative less motorized travel, as over 50% of people travel by foot and bike. But it also creates the problem of congestion in the city center, degenerated quality. And the rapid growth claims more space to accommodate more diversity and dynamic economic activities. The tendency shows Shanghai should transfer its spatial structure from Mono-center to Poly center. But the de-centralization strategy to encourage the people stay in the satellite town has not been success. Recently the municipal government has put great attention to support the secondary city in the suburb of Shanghai, according to the plan the most important three new towns will be with the population of one million. More and more industry has also been moved out to the suburb due to the lower cost for land and convenient for freight transport. In the year 2010, the world expo will be held in shanghai, some major infrastructure is now under-construction, which including the 400km metro system, and several the major passenger interchanges, all those will have a big influence on the spatial structure of Shanghai Region.

  • Shanghai and Hong Kong: Learning to Learn
6 Shanghai and Hong Kong: Learning to Learn Less than three decades after the Cultural Revolution, when educated people, including teachers, were sent to rural areas to work in the field, parts of China, notably Shanghai, now rank among the best- performing countries and economies in PISA. This chapter looks at how the education systems in both Shanghai and Hong Kong have benefited from the realisation that economic growth depends on individuals who are adaptable, creative and independent thinkers. Education reforms in these two cities have focused on upgrading teaching standards and teacher education, introducing greater curricular choice for students, and giving local authorities more autonomy to decide the content of examinations. STRONG PERFORMERS AND SUCCESSFUL REFORMERS IN EDUCATION: LESSONS FROM PISA FOR JAPAN © OECD 2012 149 6 SHANGHAI AND HONG KONG: LEARNING TO LEARN INTRODUCTION Despite China’s emergence as one of the world’s most influential economies, relatively little is known in other countries about the country’s educational system and how its students learn. The prevailing impression tends to be that students in China learn by rote, and that much in the schools is about memorising and cramming for examinations. This chapter seeks to provide a more nuanced and accurate picture of education in China, using Shanghai and Hong Kong as examples. Shanghai is one of China’s most developed urban areas, while Hong Kong, despite having the similar cultural roots, is a rather different society, and more or less self-governing under the “one country, two systems” political arrangement. While Shanghai and Hong Kong may not be representative of all parts of such a diverse country, they can provide a window into education in China through their shared lessons and future ambitions.
